Network Atlas is being deprecated. Feature requests for Orion Maps should be submitted in the Orion Platform Feature Requests

Would like to see Custom Pollers roll up in Network Atlas.

We use Network atlas heavily in our environment. We create hierarchal views in Network Atlas where the top view is the general view of our locations and then as you "drill down" you see more specific maps. This is vital to how our 24/7 help desk operates. The help desk basically has a big screen in the Command Center with this Top View map and they are instructed to drill down on an object whenever it turns red until they get to problematic object in question. Using this type of setup saves us from having to have multiple screens with multiple maps and saves us on wall real-estate. We have a lot of hanging screens as it is. However, we noticed that Custom Pollers do not "roll up" their status. We have custom pollers for some IBM temp sensors and to avoid having to set up another screen just for the views for the temp sensors we want to add the temp sensors view to our existing Top view. We have opened Case # 1083344 for this and the feedback was "Orion does not report the status of a map from UnDPs and this would possibly need to go through a Feature Request"

Thank you.

Allowing UNDPs / Customer Pollers to affect the status of a node should be a basic capability of a monitoring platform.

Otherwise you would have to have a complicated.

    1) Write an alert out based on a value of UNDP being X to for example a file.

    2) Create an application monitor that then checks if file contains alert xyz

    3) Add this monitor to your map.

    E.G:

    Map Object: Rollup

Contains: Map Object - Customer Poller

Contains: Map Object - NPM Generic Status

So in order to accomplish a task as showing something going wrong with for example Firewall HA Heartbeat failing NPM alone is enough to get you an alert generated (for example via email) but not visualised as a status. You would have to buy two products and a clunky solution.

Another option that might be worth requesting is the ability to treat alerts as a map object. This way you might be able to add an object to your map called IBM Temp Sensor Alert. When the alert is not triggered it is green, when it is triggered it is orange / red. Therefore it might be able to leverage this so change the colour of rolled up maps.

  • Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately the solution has to be user friendly because we have about a dozen administrators at different skill levels creating these views in Network Atlas. I was hoping that a simple drag and drop in Network atlas would be all that is needed similar to the other objects. I see what your are saying about taking a different approach to make this work and perhaps for my own views I can try this but for the admins that expect it to work out of the box  it might be a tough sell.
