Historical Snapshot, Viewing Your Entire SolarWinds Environment As It Was At Any Given Moment

I need to be able to see how everything in my SolarWinds environment looked, at any given moment in the past. (Limited only by the retention settings of the system, of course...)

As an example, let's say we had a major outage at 5pm on a Monday, and I need to investigate everything the following morning at 8am. I want to be able to set a time line feature for 5pm the previous day, and then be able to navigate throughout my system, seeing everything as it was at the selected time frame of 5pm Monday. I want to be able to go to that specific moment in time, and see all angles of the same data.

My brain is picturing that scene from "The Matrix", where Trinity jumps up to kick the guy, then the camera spins around her while she hangs out up in the air. (Yes, I know, there were a bunch of cameras that formed a circle around her, and the camera did not actually spin around her... focus... back to the point...)

A very similar feature is actually used in NTA, as well as in the new NetPath, allowing the user to view the stats as they appeared at any given moment in history.

Initial discussion here: Is There A Way To View The Status Of The Entire Network/SolarWinds Environment, At Any Given Moment In History?

Thank you,

  • mduplessis As of NPM 12.1, this feature will be a standard core feature, as seen here, Drag & Drop Answers to Your Toughest IT Questions .

PerStack is a feature provided with all upcoming Orion product releases which are built atop Orion Platform v2017.1 or later. The list of supported modules include (but not limited to)...

    • Network Performance Monitor 12.1
    • Server & Application Monitor 6.4
    • NetFlow Traffic Analyzer 4.2.2
    • Virtualization Manager 7.1
    • Storage Resource Monitor 6.4
    • Web Performance Monitor 2.2.1

How can this be marked as implemented.

Snapshotting a VM / Database is not the same as having a feature in a product.

  • We do virtualize our SQL Server too... it used to not be supported but with more powerful infrastructure and storage it's easily possible today.  Our entire Orion environment including additional pollers and NTA noSQL database are all VM's.

  • rschroeder No, not really. I am not really concerned with seeing the actual system, as much as I am needing to see how everything in our environment was at a specific time. I really just want a timeline type of thing, that I can dial back, and get a bird's eye view of how all of the devices were. Otherwise, we are stuck with reading logs, and could easily miss something, lost in a sea of messages. Or, maybe something along the lines of a replay option.

  • Can you accomplish this by installing everything on VM, then do scheduled snapshots?

Would that solution also handle databases?  I never hear about installing databases in VM--is that even a thing? I can understand if it's not.

Our SA's allow us to do VM snapshots of our SW servers prior to upgrades, but we're only allocated the space for 48 hours.  If we don't need to restore, the snapshots are deleted to allow others access to the space.

To paraphrase your request, it would be sweet it you could have a separate version of NCM just doing config backups of your SW environment, with diffs and restores possible.  Sure, servers & apps aren't switches & routers, but that's the concept, right?

    That would be impressive!
