Group "Muted nodes" on "Manage Nodes" page

Group "Muted nodes" on "Manage Nodes" page

So, Solarwinds finally released the long awaited "Mute Alerts" feature in the last version

That's absolutely great, but there's an important feature that I feel should go hand in hand with it:

Add the ability to Group nodes by their "Is alert Muted" value, in the "Manage Nodes" page.

The Problem:

Currently, if you mute alerts for a number of nodes (let's say, for applying security patches and restarting part of your production servers whilst keeping your site live),

you have no easy way to view them all grouped together, in order to "un-mute" them when you're done, and you'd have to either look them up by name, or go through the whole list and its multiple pages.

The fact that the "unmute" indication is in the form of a comment following the node's status does not help...

The closest I got to this was sort by status, but as you can see - the actual status has got precedence (and so it should!),

and I would really like to have the option to just view all muted nodes in one go.

My Suggestion(s)

1. Grouping:

Would be great to have either another "Group By" option in the drop-down list, maybe something along the lines of "Is Muted".

2. Improve Visibility

It would also be nice to have a dedicated "led" state for this, so that muted nodes will pop out and will be easier and quicker to spot.

Maybe maintain the actual led color for the node's current status as it is, but add an "X" overlay (or anything else more self-explanatory...)

Fellow Thwack members - suggestions for this would be most welcome

* I've only given "Node" type entities as an example here,

but needless to say - this should apply also to "Manage Applications" in SAM and any other Orion product for that matter.

I am in agreement - We just installed the new version and this was the first thing I noticed when testing "muting" nodes.

It would great to have "muted" as a grouping option, maybe in the status section (this was the first place I looked)? it could be just the normal status with an additional "(Muted)"... "Up (Muted)", "Down (Muted)"

Also the if the LED could have an overlay of a crossed out bell icon or some other indication.. example:

It would be a huge benefit to have the ability to perform unmanage and mute alerts on a group of objects. I am bit surprised this was not worked into new muted functionality as the community has been asking for it for over 5 years. You can do this from the managed nodes and application page, however many organizations don't want to give all users permissions to manage objects at that level.

great feature with some drawbacks as manageability of a group of muted nodes. Additionally, great improvements would be if it is possible to filter out muted nodes from widgets like "Nodes with problems".

The other issue is when you try to filer using StatusDescription "Alerts are muted." Does not show up in the Database..

This should have been added from the beginning.  We are running into issues with users muted objects and forgetting about unmuting them and because there is not an easy way to find them they get missed.

I found using a query was the best way to find this info...

SWQL

SELECT N.Caption AS Name,

       N.IPAddress AS IP,

       toString(toLocal(SuppressFrom)) AS "Start",

       CASE WHEN SuppressUntil is NULL

            THEN 'Never'

            ELSE toString(toLocal(SuppressUntil))

       END AS "Stop",

       n.DetailsUrl AS [_LinkFor_Name],

       '/Orion/images/StatusIcons/Small-' + N.StatusIcon AS [_IconFor_Name]

FROM Orion.AlertSuppression AS M

INNER JOIN Orion.Nodes AS N

    ON EntityUri=N.Uri

INNER JOIN Orion.NodesCustomProperties AS C

    ON N.NodeID=C.NodeID

WHERE (SuppressUntil > GETUTCDATE() or SuppressUntil IS NULL)

ORDER BY SuppressFrom

*Joined with CustomProperties in case you are like me and want to display some of those in the table - None are listed in the Select above as the fields wouldn't be consistent with others environments.

You can use this SWQL in a "Custom Query Resource" for displaying on Dashboards or Reports -

Also can use this as the SWIS query from Powershell -

Add-PSSnapin SwisSnapin

$Creds = Get-Credential

$OrionServer = "{hostname}"

$swis = Connect-Swis -Credential $Creds -Hostname $OrionServer

$MutedNodes = Get-SwisData -SwisConnection $swis -Query '

SELECT N.Caption AS Name,

       N.IPAddress AS IP,

       toLocal(A.SuppressFrom) AS "Start",

       CASE WHEN SuppressUntil is NULL

            THEN 'Never'

            ELSE toString(toLocal(SuppressUntil))

       END AS "Stop"

FROM Orion.AlertSuppression AS A

INNER JOIN Orion.Nodes AS N

    ON A.EntityUri=N.Uri

INNER JOIN Orion.NodesCustomProperties AS C

    ON N.NodeID=C.NodeID

WHERE (SuppressUntil > GETUTCDATE() or SuppressUntil IS NULL)

ORDER BY A.SuppressFrom

'

$MutedNodes | Format-Table

Hope this helps others!!

Great idea! I'd love to have this added as a feature to compliment the ability to mute.

Couldn't agree more on this. I actually had a manual method of my own Maintenance Mode where I created a custom property and had my node down alerts ignore that property, it was great because I could filter by that custom property in manage nodes and even had a widget on my main page that showed you which nodes were set to true on the custom property.

Wondering myself why this feature got added with no ability in the console to report on it.  We are running into the same issue where they are muted and then something happens and people wonder why the alert didn't go off.  Doh.
