Add more (Unix) OS's to NPM agent.

NPM agent is a great little tool. Until solarwinds adds native monitoring for Azure, Agents work great for Azure servers. On the Unix/Linux side the compatible list of OS is rather limited and short. We have a real need to monitor Oracle OS on the agents. And currently Oracle and a few other OS's we have are not on the supported list.

We've tested using version 7.2 and it actually worked by doing a manual install of the agent on the server and connecting the solarwinds server to the agent. Which means technically it should be compatible, but since it's not on the list Support has already indicated there is no support.

They told us to open this feature request to show interest and so that it gets consideration for the next version. Having a wider reach different OS's makes the agent tool more flexible and easier to use especially now that cloud computing is taking off. We plan to start developing more in the cloud but with out the ability to monitor the OS's we use makes it difficult on us having to find a third party when solarwinds should be able to do the job.

  • These would be very helpful... I have mostly SPARC.  We've investigated using x86 Solaris to replace some SPARC's since they could be virtualized in VMware but they don't seem to function the same way as we expected.  Also Solaris zones work pretty well under SPARC.

  • Votes for a Solaris agent should be made in one (or both) of the following areas depending upon which architecture you're running Solaris on.

As an 'idea' this posting is simply too broad. 'More' can be construed too broadly and easily. For instance, if we added an Agent for the Atari ST, that would be considered 'more' and therefore this idea would be closed out as 'implemented'. That would not, however, address what appears to be lcsw2013 's desire to add official support for Oracle Linux to the Orion Agent.

  • It would be nice to have a Solaris agent.

  • Turns out Oracle 7.2 is already in testing and proven to work with Agent, SolarWinds just hasn't made it official yet. And they are aware agent does not work for Oracle 7.3. Good to know that at least they have some additional OS versions in process of potentially being added in later versions.

  • Feel free to list any OS you might need agent monitoring on. I think the more we can include here the more the developers and product managers might be willing to consider this.
