Active-Active Replication

We currently have two complete instances of SolarWinds running.  One instance in each of our 2 data centers.  We need a way to replicate changes made to the primary instance to the secondary instance (IN REAL TIME).  Ideally this would be a feature within the product suite itself.  Currently we are taking a backup of the primary and restoring that database to the secondary.  This takes time and it also creates issues if you need both databases to be a mirror image of each other.

  • I believe the accepted approach to accomplish this is a bit simpler.   Rather than have two complete instances, instead go with the orion Fail-over-engine (FOE).  That coupled with a back-end SQL failover (from whatever 3rd party works for you), you should have what you're looking for I think.   Plus, by not having two active instances you won't have double the traffic for SNMP or Netflow or whatever protocols you're using.  I think with WMI this would be especially a good thing.   Guessing it would be less expensive too in terms of licensing not to mention more scalable.

  • Without going into a long detailed explanation of why this doesn't work for us I'll simply state the we have been working with the development team at SolarWinds.  They initiated an internal feature request for this and asked if we would do the same thing via Thwack.
