APC SmartUPS Universal Device Pollers

This is a fairly comprehensive collection of Universal Device Pollers for APC SmartUPS devices. If by chance something is missing from this template that you'd like to see reply to this posting and I'll update as needed.

Import this UnDP into Orion

To import this UnDP into the Universal Device Poller download the file to your Orion Server and then open the Universal Device Poller Win32 application (Start - Programs - Solarwinds Orion - Network Performance Monitor - Universal Device Poller). From the "File" menu select "Import Universal Device Poller". Click "Open", browse to the location when you saved the downloaded file and click "Open". Select "SmartUPS" from the left hand window of the Universal Device Poller Import Wizard and click "Import". Finally click "OK".

Apply This UnDP to Nodes

To apply this UnDP to your APC UPS equipment open the Universal Device Poller as described above. Click on "Assign Pollers". Expand "All pollers", check the box next to "SmartUPS" and click "Next". Expand “All Nodes” and select the APC SmartUPS device from the list of Orion monitored nodes and click “Finish”.

Add the Universal Device Poller Status to your View

Click “Admin” in the top right of the Orion web interface and then click “Manage Views” under “Views”. Select "Node Details" from the list and click "Edit". Click the green [+] to add a resource to the view. Under the "Node Detail Reports - Resources that apply to a single network node" select "Universal Device Poller Status" and click “submit” to add the Universal Device Poller Status to the Node Details view. Lastly click “Done”. Your changes will be saved and you’ll be returned to Manage Views. Now when you navigate to a node that has the SmartUPS UnDP applied to it the Universal Device Poller status tabular data will be displayed in the web interface of Orion.

Very nice, thanks! How do you get the gauges at the bottom?
Nice work bringing them all into one clean package... Been adding these as I need them for a year or so.
What verion of SNMP is the poller using?
How do you install it?
Download the template and then import into the Universal Device Poller. Apply the UnDPs to any APC UPS equipment you're managing/monitoring with Orion NPM
How did you add the tabular data shown in the first image?
Found it, it is the Universal Device Poller Status. When I was using the preview it was bringing up a printer, not an APC unit. Excellent resource, thank you for your work.
Does not seem to work for AP9631v5.0.1 using the UPS Network Management Card 2 (http://www.apc.com/products/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=AP9630&tab=Software)

Anyone else get it to work?
christianoj: How did you add the tabular data shown in the first image?

Please read the section "Add the Universal Device Poller Status to your View" recently posted above.
jspanitz, I'm not aware of any issues with the AP9631 but if you could do a MIB walk of the device and PM me with the results I would be happy to look at it and make the necessary adjustments to the UnDP.
Kman1221: How do you install it?

Please read supplied directions recently added above.
IT_Denver: What verion of SNMP is the poller using?

This Universal Device Poller has been tested and verified working with both SNMPv2 and SNMPv3, though there's no reason I can think of that this wouldn't also work with SNMPv1
just what i required...
Oh crud. Forget it. I NEVER saw the "show" button before which exposes the customization features. Note to SolarWinds - perhaps rename the button to "Advanced" since I am pretty sure I ignored it thinking it would jsut show the guage I was building, not the advanced settings.
Got it working with AP9631 - we had the wrong firmware on the card. Now to try and create a historical report.
One last question - How did you get the linear charts color ranges changed (Where on the chart the Green, Yellow and Red zones are displayed)?
How do you get the gauges. I'm missing it somewhere.
Thank you so much!
Hi,

I cant see the gauges as well. I managed to get the tabular data though.

Thanks
Hi aLTeReGo,
Have you updated this at any point? I downloaded this and it seems to work fine for many of my APCs, but for many of my newer 5000s it doesn't collect all stats. I did notice that the newer Web SNMP cards are MB v3.9.2 while the older ones that worked were v3.8.6.

I thought I'd ask before I beat my head against the wall any further. Thanks!

Len
lfransen, do none of the UnDP's work or is it just some of them? Can you list the ones that aren't working?
Thanks worked for me on two Smart-UPS RT 6000 RM XL
You can add linear and radial gauges to the node details page for Universal Device Pollers by clicking "customize page" in the top right of the screen. What's nice is these resources can auto-hide so they only show up for devices that have this UnDP applied. Very slick.
hi aLTeReGo

Very nice, thank you. How did you manage to get the bottom 2 images?

Thank you
Absolutely brilliant!
Does this support standard APC PDU's? Looking for a template that does that.

Craig
this is great. where do those gauges come from? I went to the customize page but didn't see anything there to add graphs.
apscherz, from the Node Details page click on "Customize Page" and add a new resource with the [+] next to the column you'd like to see the gauge in. Expand "Node Gauges - Real-time node gauges for a NPM" and select either "Universal Device Poller - Linear Gauge" or Universal Device Poller - Radial Gauge" depending on your preference. Once you've added the resource to the view you can customize it by clicking "Edit" in the resource and selecting what you'd like to see in the gauge.
This is awesome! Saved me a bunch of time!
Thanks for sharing.
This has made my day so much easier...Thanks
how about the self-test date and results?
Nice list of pollers, just what I needed for some new APC UPS's. Unfortunately data will not appear on web display. Very odd, where I can test them individually via assign-node and get data back.
of course! I work on it for a while to find the problem, kicking rocks and and don't find anything. Only to have a service restart kick everything in the pants.

I like this list of pollers, saved me a lot of time building them manually.

Just started using Orion NPM and this made my life alot easier.  Has anyone built any alerts for these pollers?

Thx

Thanks!  This was an awesome write up and saved me tons of time!

Thanks this is exactly what I was looking for, but I'm having trouble adding it. Running v10.4.1

I was able to import the poller.  Then when I assigned the poller to the node, the only odd thing was I couldn't select all pollers with one checkbox.  There was no checkbox next to "SmartUPS".  I had to expand it and select each poller individually.  No big deal but just wanted to mention.

But when I try to add the gauges, I can't find them on the list.  I have tried restarting services.

Shane, did you see this comment at the bottom?

Hi there, yep -- sure did.  I can add a single poller, but I can't see how to add all the pollers in one chart, like I see in the screenshot in this doc.

When adding a Resource to a view expand "Node Gauges" and select "Universal Device Poller - Linear Gauge" or "Universal Device Poller - Radial Gauge" depending on how you'd like the information presented.

Thanks, that did it.  I can add one MIB per gauge.  is there a way to get a text box with all the results from all the SmartUPS pollers? Rather than add 15 gauges?

As stated above:

Add the Universal Device Poller Status to your View

Click “Admin” in the top right of the Orion web interface and then click “Manage Views” under “Views”. Select "Node Details" from the list and click "Edit". Click the green [+] to add a resource to the view. Under the "Node Detail Reports - Resources that apply to a single network node" select "Universal Device Poller Status" and click “submit” to add the Universal Device Poller Status to the Node Details view. Now when you navigate to a node that has the SmartUPS UnDP applied to it the Universal Device Poller status tabular data will be displayed in the web interface of Orion.

I can add the Universal Device Poller Status.  I navigate to the node page, and there new resource is currently blank (says click to edit).  I edit, but then I have to select which "Universal Device Poller" I want it to display.  I still have to select an individual poller (like upsAdvBatteryRunTimeRemaining), I can't select all the SmartUPS pollers.

The Universal Device Poller Status Resource has no options under the "Edit" button other than auto-hide as you can see pictured below. I believe you may have added the wrong resource to the view.

Universal Device Poller Status.png

I believe the resource you added was the Tabular Universal Device Poller resource which is used for SNMP Tables

Thank you, that was it.  I was adding Universal Device Poller Summary.  I added Universal Device Poller Status and it works as you suggest.

hello;

i could not find the "Node Gauges" , i saw tons of others, but none statring with node

as well i have added my apc PDU (AP8865) they show up ,SW sees  the PDU and also note that it has a net mgmt  inside (ap9537) with fw version 5.1.4

i added them with pollers , but no data appears. i can go to the PDU itself and see all the data. i need SW tools to pull the data for long term tracking. the pdu only saves one week of data

when add to the home pages , no data is sees. any ideas?

Hey alterego,

Is there a new APC SmartUPS.UnDP download?
Thanks

Glenn

The one posted here is the absolute latest.

Thanks a lot

Thank you all for the information. I appreciate this.

I have this up and running on 16 APC UPSs and it works great.

Looking at what it is polling however, I am wondering what you use (or would use) to create an alert to know when the APC is actually on battery power???

upsBasicOutputStatus??

The value I get for that is Online, so I assume that when it is on battery power, that value changes to Offline?

What would the alert for this look like?

Do you know of another way??

When I look at the MIB tree, I see upsBasicStateOutputState which is and ASCII string containing the 64 flags representing  the current state(s) of the UPS. If the Network Card  is unable to determine the state of the UPS , this

variable is set to 'UNKNOWN'.

The flags are numbered 1 to 64 , read from left to right. The flags are defined as follows:

Flag 1: Abnormal Condition Present

Flag 2: On Battery

Flag 3: Low Battery

Flag 4: On Line

While there are more conditions that it would be possible to monitor (flags 5 to 51), I am not sure that these really provide much in the way of the kind of alert most would want. I mean it would be nice if it would be able to go and and send out these other condition flags as well maybe as an informational alert if the condition is met, but I am not sure that it is worth building something this sophisticated. I for one have never attempted to build an alert like this that needs translation in order to get the value.

Really, I would like the alert to trigger only if the UPS is on battery and when the UPS goes back to being On Line as far as an alert goes. I like being able to monitor the other values and I think it is of value when manually looking at the UPS within Solarwinds, but as so go to alert from.

What are your thoughts?
