help getting a better understanding of hardware health monitor

Hi all

I am fairly new to Solarwinds and would like to get some advise from someone not as novice as myself.

I would like to monitor the physical hardware of our servers as well as the performance of the apps running on them. where i do not understand completely is how I monitor the hardware. for example

I have a physical HP server with VMWARE ESXI 4.1 installed which is set to monitor only using ICMP but then also to poll for vmware data. Once added in as a node i can see the hardware health, but I am missing memory, I can see CPU, POWER, FAN etc. How did it get this info? and why is memory not there?

You will need to find the right WBEM provider for your server model(s) and install them. I'm not quite sure whether you'll get Hardware Health through SNMP or not since the WBEM provider uses the CIM service…

Hello Ronnie,
You need to enable SNMP on the host in order to poll the HP SIM agent and get the missing Hardware Health.

Do you mean i need to enable SNMP on the ESXi host? I saw an article on how to enable snmp for esxi. my guess it that this is not the correct place?

Hi,
Yes, get SNMP running and you'll be set. Full Hardware Health details only show if the HP agent is running.
This link shows you the simplest way of enabling SNMP on ESXi 5.1 (i guessed that is what you have).
Also make sure that the HP management service installed on the ESXi server is running.
edit: do you have SAM installed too or just NPM?

Thank you very much for your info. Will get me going. However I cant see where to get the insight WBEM providers for HP and ESXi on that page? Am I missing a download link somewhere?
I assume it is HP Insight Management WBEM Providers for ESXi that I need?

I'm not quite sure whether you'll get Hardware Health through SNMP or not since the WBEM provider uses the CIM service.
In that case, after installing make sure that the CIM server service and Firewall rule in the ESXi security settings are present and permitted.
CIM uses port 5888/5889 and that is what SAM will use to gather the CIM data (Hardware Health).
Either way, you'd want SNMP enabled, too, in order to get CPU, MEM, NET and VOL statistics.
