XML and Netconf management of Cisco Nexus devices

Hello there...

We have gone on some education for the Cisco Nexus equipment line recently.  We were told that SNMP support for the platform is limited.  I hope that people have not had issues in getting Orion NPM or APM to monitor standard MIBs and other information like BGP peer tables without difficulty.

Cisco advised that SNMP is on the way out (yes, heard that before) and that management using XML-based Network Configuration Protocol (NETCONF) is the way of the future.  Netconf is described in RFC4742 (http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc4742).  There is Netconf information from Cisco available at: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/datacenter/sw/4_1/nx-os/xml/user/guide/using.html

Informally Cisco says they will not guarantee that all features on the Nexus line will be able to be managed by SNMP, however they will be able to be managed by Netconf.

Is there any plans for the Solarwinds Orion products to have the ability to use Netconf (over SSH2) in the future for managing devices, like the Cisco Nexus product range?  It sounds like it is something that could get very big.

Cheers,

... Simon
