Upgrade Solarwinds and MS Server

Dear Thwack Team,

Hi,

We are running NPM(12.3) and SAM(6.7) on MS Server 2012 and MS SQL 2014. We now want to upgrade to latest NPM and SAM but we need to upgrade MS server either to 2016 or 2019. I would highly appreciate if any one can share the roadmap to upgradation. Also we need to upgrade it with minimum possible downtime since we are monitoring critical services.

We've been talking a bunch about upgrades recently.

I've written a blog or two about upgrades. We've also updated the Success Center to provide the most recent upgrade information. Don't forget that you can always call support and give them your details and they can help formulate a plan with you.

Oh - and you don't have to upgrade off of Windows Server 2012 if you don't want. I talk about that in Upgrade Empathy.

I just went through similar in January before deciding to start from scratch with a clean system (other than exporting alerting rules and importing them into the new system along with custom properties and custom dashboard widgets).
Performance was ok after trying to upgrade the OS and then Orion but vastly better with a whole clean system.
The hardest part is really migrating the database to a new box which is nicely detailed in one of the links above. Otherwise moving to a clean OS/SQL box is a fast way to better results.

My suggestion will be: Upgrade your Solarwinds to 2020.2 as it supports MS server 2012 and MSSQL 2012. Then try migrating to new MS server 2019 & SQL using the link suggested by jblankjblank
I am also going though a similar situation and planing to upgrade in a month.
