Solarwinds Statistics Gathering

Question about how Solarwinds collects statistics:

When doing a regular snmpwalk using either v1 or v2c to a linux box running net-snmp-5.1.2 the CPUs on the box do not go over about 30%. However, when Solarwinds does a stat collection (which we have set to 10 minutes) the CPUs on the server are quickly maxed out at about 97%, and snmpd never seems to finish giving Solarwinds stats. How does the collection act differently than the walk?

Any information you can provide would be appreciated.
