Solarwinds NPM and NCM Deployment

Hello,

We are going to deploy Solarwinds NPM and NCM into our network. We will be installing both applications into thesame VM, and will have the SQL server in another server. In this scenario, do we just need 1 SQL server 2012 license for our SQL server, and 1 additional SQL Server 2012 CAL (basically for the NPM & NCM server as a client to SQL)? We are thinking to use SQL 2012 Standard. Your advice will much appreciated. Thanks.

If you're using the CAL licensing method, then you'll need a license for the SQL user (not be to confused with a domain/workgroup user) which connects to the database. When you install NPM you'll create…

If you're using the CAL licensing method, then you'll need a license for the SQL user (not be to confused with a domain/workgroup user) which connects to the database. When you install NPM you'll create this user (it'll suggest a default name for you). NPM and NCM use the same database, so the one database user will be enough for poller>database connectivity, and it should cover connections from IIS on the primary poller to the database for Orion website access.
Note that if you ever consider using NTA, you'll have to budget for another database engine (MySQL/SQL Server etc) as SolarWinds recommends that the NetFlow database is stored separately.

Thanks for the really good information silverbacksays. Is Solarwinds compatible with SQL Server Standard 2012? I could not find the exact SQL server type compatibility (i.e. Enterprise, standard, etc.). We are thinking of procuring standard since there are things we probably don't need in Enterprise that we don't want to spend on. Thanks again.

Standard edition should be fine, the database size should never get large enough to breach the Enterprise threshold

I don't think this is right (the CAL licencing count) you will need a CAL for each solarwinds user as well if you go that method.
