Orion Server AWS instance type?

Per the Orion Platform requirements a "m5d.2xlarge with SSD" is recommended for XL deployments: Orion Platform requirements - SolarWinds Worldwide, LLC. Help and Support

I have a question about this.

Per Amazon's documentation, a m5d.2xlarge instance includes the following:

  • 1 EBS volume minimum for the OS install (the root volume)
  • 1 x 300 GB NVMe SSD (Note: this is an "Instance store")

My question is what would be the purpose of the 300 GB instance store?

The AWS documentation describes it as storage that "...is located on disks that are physically attached to the host computer. Instance store is ideal for temporary storage of information that changes frequently, such as buffers, caches, scratch data, and other temporary content, or for data that is replicated across a fleet of instances, such as a load-balanced pool of web servers."

By default, this storage isn't even mounted and as far as I could see in the SolarWinds documentation there is no mention of what it's supposed to be used for.
