NPM on a 64 bit server with more than 4 GB of RAM

Hello,

I've seen that NPM is a 32 bit application. Then the effort to upgrade a 32 bit OS (Windows 2003 Ent Ed. -> Windows 2008 R2) with the intent to add more than 4 GB of RAM can be quite useless.

Is my assumption right?

Second question:

If I install on the same server NPM + IPAM + IPSLA + NCM, can make sense upgrading the OS to add more than 4 GB of RAM?

I have something like 2000 nodes on my network.

Hi NPM + Modules can be run on 64 bit with running 32 bit IIS. Yes you can install NPM + IPAM + IPSLA + NCM all in one server. However you need SQL server on physical system as recommended by admin guide…

True, a 32 bit process running on a 64bit processor can only use 3gb of RAM.
But if you open task manager on your orion server, you could see 10 or more solarwinds 32bit processes, so the solarwinds applications could use 30gb of RAM (I actually doubt that, but that would be the logic).
So the upgrade to 64bit is worth it (or atleast it was for me).

Anyway I still have my doubt:
if I have a server with 2 main application (NPM + NVM) and 2 modules (IPSLA + IPAM) monitoring a wide network (2000 nodes), should I upgrade to 64 OS to add more RAM?

Yes you need 64 bit OS in order add more RAM . Please read this below for more details.

SolarWinds NPM + NCM + Modules application have no issue and its fully supported with 64 bit operating system once you fulfill required min hardware requirements for poller and SQL server as per admin guide.

Usually the place that needs the most horsepower in an installation is on the SQL server, so I recommend putting 64 bit on the SQL server box with 64 bit SQL Server.
Putting more RAM on your Orion server won't hurt though since Window 2008 can take advantage of the extra RAM

I am going to be migrating NPM NCM IPAM APM NTA all on a new Win 2008 R2 64Bit server.. from earlier answers i see that IIS needs to be a 32 bit version.. Does that still hold true to this day... Are there any pointers that you can give me for a better/easier migration... Can i move my existing licenses to the new server from the old server and then place the new server in production and then decommission the old.. Any and all help would be appreciated...

Hi Kevin--
The Orion Server Migration instruction might give you some pointers for this. And yes, I do believe it still holds true that your IIS needs to be a 32 bit.
