I am looking for some guidance on what version of SQL server we should be running along side our planned upgrade to use Solarwinds HA on NPM 12.4.
We plan to use availability groups to replicate the database, but we are not sure whether to use Basic Availability Groups (SQL Standard) or AlwaysOn Availabilty groups (SQL Enterprise).
The NPM 12.4 SQL Server specifications state the below is the minimum / recommended setup.
Require- | Small SL100, SL250, SL500 | Medium SL2000 | Large SLX |
SQL | Express,
| ||
CPU | Quad core processor or better | Dual quad core processor or better | Dual quad core processor or better |
Memory | 8 GB minimum 16 GB recommended | 16 GB minimum 64 GB recommended
| 64 GB minimum 128 GB recommended |
We have a SLX license due to the fact that we monitor a lot of interfaces, but from a NODES point of view we only monitor around 1200 nodes in total.
Based on the above setup, it is stating that the memory spec required for an SLX License is 64Gb Min / 128Gb Recommended, however what number of NODES is this based on, or what is that based on if not nodes?
Would we be able to get away with a lower amount of ram installed and possibly lower CPU cores assigned but still have a supported installation or does the installation HAVE to have the minimum requirements before it will be classed as a supported installation.
As for Basic v's AlwaysON Availability groups, what are other people using in their setup, what are the advanatges / disadvantages from using either, apart from the licensing costs, is there one any better than the other?
