Juniper NetScreen interface monitoring

Can anyone explain the differences between the interfaces on the netScreen firewalls? More specifically, which one is best to monitor for traffic statistics.

These are clustered firewalls. I am montoring the VIP via Orion, and the attached image is what I see on most of them.

Notice that there are 2 listings for each physical interface.

ex: ethernet0/1   and another listing for it:   ethernet0/1 · ethernet0/1

thanks,

Jeremy

  • For Netscreen IOS we support monitoring sub-interfaces. For more info about sub-interfaces please check ScreenOS Reference Guide, which is free to download.

About monitoring traffic statistics, both interface and sub-interface supports traffic counters, but only interface supports error & discards counters. It is up to you which one you choose, what data you want to see. If you expand those interface resources in List resources, you will see what statistics we are able to monitor for particular interfaces, that way you can distinguish interface and sub-interfaces, but basically ones with two part labels (like ethernet1/2 · ethernet1/2) are sub-interfaces.
