How to restart the pollers

My pollers occasionally stop for whatever reason. No custom pollers defined. Usually what I have to do is kill the netperfmon.exe programs on each poller, restart them them attempt to connect with system manager. System manager takes a VERY long time to connect on each poller but one I have the full list of devices, the pollers are active.

Am I missing something? Is there a more direct way to tell the pollers to wake up? I know they shouldn't be stopping, but I see there are some known issues. I'm running 9.1 SP3 on two  Windows 2003 server, both are hefty machines. One of them host the SQL database, neither seem to be in anyway overloaded.

Thanks Much
