Enable 64-bit counters support by default

Not sure I follow you. The default is 32 bit counters. Are you asking how to default to 64 bit? If that is the case it is not possible today.

I believe they want 64 bit as the default.  So have it check automatically and you can uncheck if needed.  I agree and would like to see this since most new revs of code out there support the 64 bit counts.

Agreed.  We would like to have 64-bit counters enabled as default and disabled for those few devices that do not support 32-bit counters.

This is probably a stupid question, but what this 64 or 32 bit counter means? What type of devices use 64bit counters? This is interesting, because I've put everything as default (network devices mainly, swithes for example) and it was news to me that it may cause some wrong graphs...

I was wondering the same thing. What is the difference between the 32 bit and the 64 bit counters? Is there an advantage to using one over the other? Does one method give more accurate results than the other?

These counters are rolling counters, like the odometer in a car. It used to be that you could drive a car 100,000 miles and the Odometer would "rollover" and read 000000 like the car was new. This is counter rollover. SNMP rolling counters do the same. 32 bit counters have 32 binary digits and may roll-over often when measuring a very high speed interface. Using a 64 bit counter will avoid frequent roll-over.

We would prefer system default to be 64-bit counters. 32-bit default counters is a pain point, as it is frequently overlooked when adding new nodes (90% of which support 64-bit). Results in bad data for high utilization interfaces.
