Dependencies and Groups: Am I on the right track?

I'd like to see a response to this - I'm in about the same boat.

Can I get at least a hint here? 

We don't have the resources to set up a test environment to mirror this, short of staff and time, and I really don't want to wait for the t1 to drop sometime to see if it works.  We've got 13 branches like this, and the data center is much more complicated.  Any input would be appreciated.

I would also like to se an answer to this. SolarWinds?

Is it right to assume that Dependencies are recursive?  E.G.  If I have 2 Switches and a router connected as follows:

RTR --> SW1 --> SW2

And I create a dependency between RTR and SW1 and another Dependency between SW1 and SW2, if RTR goes down can I assume that Orion is intelligent enough to recognize that if SW1 is now unreachable SW2 should be too?  Or do I need to include SW2 in the dependency for the RTR as well?

I've seen it... but honestly I think I lot of us are leery as there's no way to simulate an event. I CAN tell you IMHO the process has issues.... we've done exactly what the example says, and we still get alerts from a site's devices IF the site's router goes down.

Some sites it works, some it doesn't. All set up the same. Very odd.

I agree those blogs don't seem to work, I have a very small office that is connected to our network via a VPN Tunnel.  Since it's a VPN tunnel over the internet, it tends to go down a bit more frequently than other sites.  That and it's simplicity is why I choose this site to test with.

Here's how I have it configured, but when the Tunnel drops, I still get alerts for all the devices:

I have the following alerts configured for this site.

"When a Node Status is equal to Down AND City is equal to STS"  Send an email to a specified list of people.

By my reading, since the children devices are in an "unreachable" state, we shouldn't get alerted.  But we do.

Also make sure you have cleaned up or removed you old alerts from before dependencies.

So I was able to test this - and it looks like it is working as planned.  Seems like a cumbersome system, but it's working.
