Clarity Regarding Node SNMP & ICMP Polling & SNMP Status & Response Time Poller

I can't be the ONLY one confused about how devices are being polled for response times and status, since there is conflicting information.

When I go to a node and edit its properties for example, the SNMP & ICMP polling method is chosen. However, under manage pollers, the same node is assigned to the status & response time SNMP SolarWinds Native Poller, and in there it states that SNMP is being used, NOT ICMP.

So then, I do some Googling and apparently for SNMP, requests are being sent to 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.2.0. Then I look at the node's properties and I see that the polling method is SNMP AND ICMP, so I'm confused about whether or not ICMP is used to ping and SNMP is used to collect other statistics.

Can anyone shed some light on what's actually going on here?

I've looked at several SolarWinds resources for information pertaining to this:
