Cisco Switch Stack Alert

Jump to solution

We had an incident this morning where one of our 6509 VSS Chassis failed but no alerts were triggered as the other chassis was still up and active and didn't realise the chassis was down for 2 - 3 minutes.

I can create an alert based on if the supervisor is up or not but what I really want is a generic alert for any stacked switches, 2960's, 3750's and the 6509's to alert when a single switch in the stack drops off the network but the stack is still up.

I'm just not sure how to go about making this generic to cover all stacks.

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Jon

Hi Jon -

I'm sure someone may have a much cleverer way of doing it, but I use the method outlined in this document to alert on this sort of thing. I've got a similar set up as yourself and I've simply created a custom property to tag the VSS VSL and fast-hello interfaces as "interesting" and hence to send an alert when one goes down etc.

The method works the same for 3750 stacks, but it's just a case of assigning a custom property to the stack ports.

John
