Best Practices for Setting up alerts

I am looking for best practices and any helpful hints on setting up SQL alerts within Solarwinds Orion alert manager. Specifically counters for DB usage, non responce times, if the DB is over taxed, general preformance items that should be monitored. Any ideas or better yet, perhaps a best pratice doucment that helps outline how to setup such alerts.
