Additional poller - remote

I'm looking at putting an additional poller in a remote subnet.  I understand that the poller needs to talk back to the database.

I figure the poller should poll whatever devices and write it's findings in the database.  The NPM server would then display the information from the database.

I'm told the NPM server (not the poller) needs connectivity to this subnet for some reason, or else the status won't show up properly in the NPM.  Is this true?  If it is, can someone shed some light on this.

Thanks
