2020.2.4 Upgrade Experience

TLDR: Keep retrying the configuration when it fails during centralized upgrades, and maybe you'll be successful.

Currently upgrading from 2020.2.1 HF2 to 2020.2.4, and it's been fairly rocky. I'm upgrading via the centralized upgrade process using the offline method. So far I've had to retry the upgrade on the primary Orion server no less than 7 times as it's failed for numerous reasons. After all the retries, the Primary server is finally complete and the additional polling engines are going through the process now. Will update if I run into other issues.

Edit: Only had to retry the configuration on one additional polling engine one time. Looks like I'm completely on 2020.2.4 now!

Am going through the approval process to turn mine back on at the moment. If approved will be doing the same thing. Should know sometime this week. Will let you know how it works out.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I need to schedule my upgrade, but I think I will wait a bit. Maybe they still have some bugs to iron out or something. My system no longer has access to the Internet, except for an exception for the SolarWinds license server. It has been back online since earlier this month. I need it to keep working.

I have upgraded two installations already. Not a single bump. It was very smooth. Both took about 30-45 min.
Both from 2020.2.1 HF2 to 2020.2.4

jhorng If you wouldn't mind, would you share some of the problems you had? What caused your upgrade to fail all those times? Even sharing a few of them would certainly be helpful to all of us. Thanks!

I am curious to hear what others say, in particular those with larger environments that include multiple modules and scalability servers (ape's and awe's).

Hi.
I have upgraded both Orion platforms we have. We have SAM, NMP and WPM, with several APE and AWS.
The upgrade went fine where I performed the following process:
1. Downloaded the offline installer, and run manually the pre-stage on the main poller.
2. Run the pre-stage from the web console such that all installers was deployed ready on all Orion servers.
3. Run the upgrade with minor issues where the configuration failed, but 1-3 retries fixed it.
The agent upgrade took long time, but without any specific issue. Only a couple of agents that failed, og thousands.
It has now run for a couple of days, and it seems to work fine.
One thing we have noticed is that the Windows Security log on the Orion servers are spammed with following eventID's:
5058 Key file operation
5061 Cryptographic operation
Anyone having the same issue?
I have filed a support case on this.

Just did ours, from 2020.2.1 HF2, one primary and four additional pollers, 9 Orion components, took about 1.5 hours via centralized upgrade. Primary sat at the config wizard step for a while but that's usual.
