Need report to compare startup and running configs

I need to find out how to generate a nightly report that checks the startup and running configs of each of my devices and, if they don't match on a device, the report notes that fact. Basically, I'm trying to mitigate the issue where someone makes config changes but forgets to write them (or wants to wait a couple days to test the changes then forgets). I don't want to put out a nightly script to write run to start each night because there are instances where we are letting changes run for a few days to test them but don't want to write them so that reloading the box gets us back to where we were. I want to get a report that tells me that systems X, Y, and Z have mismatched run-start configs and, if possible, gives me the mismatched lines.

I am looking to do the same thing. Mgmt wants Cirrus to replace CiscoWorks, but without this feature they may go back to CiscoWorks.

Anyone have any ideas?

I never got any info on this being implemented. As a (bad) workaround, I run a script from time to time that simply pushes out a write command to the devices to write whatever is running to memory. I really wish they would implement this.

Sorry I missed your posts. This is a really good feature request and we'll definitely look at this as part of 5.1. So, what if we did the following:
1. Updated our Config Change Report (both manual run and job) to allow comparison of latest startup config versus latest running config (based on configs that have been downloaded)
2. Created a Startup versus Running Config Chart in NCM website (like Baseline versus Runninng Config Chart)

I looked at the new NCM demo (replaced Cirrus) and they have a similar report on the demo page. you might see if it's what you need. It's a Baseline vs. Running config report. No quite the same, but if you keep your baselines up to day (I don't), it might give you what you're looking for.

I requested this about a year ago along with a cleaner file system for Cirrus.

I would like to be able to download and baseline BOTH running and startup configs. Not just one or the other!

I would like to compare a downloaded running config and compare it to a base lined running config and then compare the current running to the base lined startup config. I would also like to compare base lined startup config to a downloaded startup config.

The file system I would like to see would look something like this:

--NODE (folder)

     --Running Configs (folder)

          --Running config 1 (Baseline)     ----files

          --Running config 2

          --Running config 3

     --Startup Configs (folder)

          --Startup config 1 (Baseline)     ----files

          --Startup config 2

          --Startup config 3

Chris,

Yes... A report showing startup vs running mismatches is a must have. Too often people make changes, forget to commit them to nvram, the device reloads for whatever reason, and the changes are gone. A quick, at-a-glance report that points these out would be helpful. Of course one could always schedule a job to periodically touch all devices and commit any changes to mem, but with a report you can take notice of who's not saving their changes and go beat 'em up... :)
