IPAM Searching and Supernets

This is a topic for which their are some old posts but I did not find anything recent.  A lot of what was being requested in those older posts, with regard to searching, seems to be fixed.  I would like to concentrate here on a specific search feature that is still needed.

We have several supernets in IPAM and most only have some subnets in use within the supernet's range.  When a staff member is searching for an available subnet to fulfill a request for a subnet, the put in the subnet such as 172.10.21. and no results are returned.  Right off one might think this subnet is then available to assign when it actually may be a subnet that falls within the range of a supernet but just is not currently used.

Ideally, the search above should also return any supernet which spans the IP so that an intelligent decision on if the subnet is available can be made based on that search.

Let me also add that the base number for the supernet, say something like 172.10.0.0, is also not searchable.  Meaning if I put that full IP into the search box and it is configured in IPAM, it will not come up in the results.

If I am missing something here, please let me know.  Otherwise, if you believe in the cause, please vote.

THANKS

Mike

  • I agree, it could be very useful. A request for listing supernets came in, just the other day. If you need it, you should have it. If you don't, then turn it off. This post is fairly dated, does anyone know if the functionality has been added?

  • None. I'm in favor of this functionality. I need this functionality. In my opinion, the search should match subnets and for those that don't want that, they can disable the field in the search selection dialog.

  • jaguarbrad So is there some reason that further search ability could not be added for those that need it while providing the ability for the IPAM Admin to throw a switch turning the functionality on or off?  The current search limitation could even be the default as long as we have a way around the limitation.

I mean really...  Doesn't seem fair that we have to suffer without it just so the few that don't want it can have it their way.

  • Currently, the search functionality only searches the IP Address table, not matching any part of the subnet information. This makes IPAM unusable for providers who will allocate subnets to customers without tracking the individual addresses.
