HA Evaluation

Hi All,

I'm trying to evaluate HA in my test environment using evaluation licenses. I have setup a primary server running NPM, NCM and NTA using the latest NTA installer.

I have setup a backup server with the same HW config.

First thing I tried was copy and run the installer I used to setup the primary to the backup server using the add a Scalability Engine option which ends in the following error:

pastedImage_0.png

I assumed this was due to the fact I hadn't started the HA evaluation license on the primary, so I followed the instructions in:

Set up the standby server - SolarWinds Worldwide, LLC. Help and Support

This fails in step 6. On the Setup a High Availability Server dialog, click Download installer now.

Resulting in the following error:

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thx, John

  • I would recommend you first try copying the 'SolarWinds.Orion.Installer.exe' installer from 'C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Installers\' directory to the secondary server and run it.

If that results in the same error, download the latest Scalability Engines installer from your Customer Portal and try that.

  • We have tried reproducing this issue internally without success. If you're willing, please send me your SolarWinds.Administration.Client.log and Solarwinds.Administration.log files so we can determine why this this is occuring.

  • Thanks for the responses and sorry for the late reply. I only had time to continue my evaluation this morning.

I have used the Orion installer as suggested, but get the same error.

The only log file created is C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Logs\Installer\2019-01-22_10-59-29\AdministrationService.Client.log. From the log I can see that the installer is trying to retrieve the metadata from the Registry which does not contain the information:

Is this normal or related to an evaluation licence?

  • Registry entries are available but rather under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\... than HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\...

  • Hi John,

It seems that the problem manifests during the primary server installation and then your case is just one of the consequences. Do you think it would be possible to get us logs from primary server installation? Also regarding registry - slightly below what's on your screenshot there is also key 'Installer' with information that are read later. That value on the primary server is required for HA installer to determine what version of installer is the correct one. Maybe it is missing for some reason there?

  • Hi Kacperm,

Again sorry for the late reply. Below the screenshot of the registry:

    pastedImage_2.png

The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node seems to be normal an is used when a 64 bit version of the software is installed.

The As for the logs, there are so many of them. Please let me know which one you require and how/where I can upload them.

I have tried to start from scratch and install the primary server again, but the error I get, when setting up the backup, is the same.

    Thanks, John

  • The servers need to communicate using the Administration Service, have you made sure all the required ports are open between the servers? If you goto All Settings > High Availability Deployment Summary. Do you see the Primary server listed and is it Green?

  • Hi David,

    Administration Service is up

    pastedImage_0.png

    Primary server is up

    pastedImage_1.png

And firewall on both primary and backup are off:

  • Hi,

Sorry for my late answer - short vacation time emoticons_happy.png

Your registry is missing installer related entry - it is required for SE installer correct behavior. To fix that download any online installer from the Customer Portal and run it on the primary server - after that you should have 'Path' field present in Installer key. Then use the same downloaded installer for HA installation.
