Writing Challenge Day 28: When This Is Over

When this is over, will we shake hands again?
Will we make plans again?
Or will it all be banned again?

When this is over, will we commute again?
Will offices be absolute again?
Or will my car be moot again?

When this is over, will we still carry hand sanitizer?
Will we be any wiser?
Or will we forget it all like a blur?

I wouldn’t dare speak for the rest of the world, But for myself, these things are sure:

When this is over, I’ll take fewer things for granted
I’ll make the most of the seeds I’ve planted
I’ll work harder for the things I’ve always wanted

When this is over, I’ll prioritize my happiness
I’ll try so hard to worry less
I’ll always give my very best

When this is over—and it will be—
I’ll be the best possible version of me.

===================

Poetry aside: when this is over, I’m getting a haircut (it’s been 296 days, but who’s counting?) and rebooking the European vacation I had planned for Spring 2020. What about you?

Parents
  • When this is over...

    • Use my FCC (Future Cruise Credits) for the two cruises I had to cancel
    • Give everyone a high-five
    • Take a true vacation and work on my tan
    • Visit friends with confidence
    • Play a sit-down game of D&D again
    • Sit in a cube next to  (the poor woman hasn't ever had to deal with experience "neighbor" Kevin)
    • Casually hear about everyone's weekend
    • Have an actual weekend
    • Hug people without fear
    • Attend a happy hour that isn't virtual
    • Meet up with friends and coworkers from around the world at a SolarWinds User Group

In summary, take my vacations and reconnect with people that aren't in my immediate circle.  I would have never thought that I, a self-described introvert, would desire human connections so much.  I miss seeing the community members IRL, I miss the hallway conversations, I miss the chatter and din of an active office.  But as much as I miss those things, I've always put the safety of others above that of myself.

However, there are some things that will remain the same in the post-2020 days.

    • Virtual meetings with family who live over 1,000 miles away
    • Valuing the THWACK community and it's members by connecting as much as possible
    • Reminding myself that I am blessed to work for a company that both values and appreciates my contributions
    • Loving my wife, and by extension, my life and helping each other grow to be better than we were the day before

No matter what happens with the next twelve months, I've learned to take stock in the things that are defining to my life.

Big kudos to  for the poingent and heart-felt poetry.  When we get back to normal, are there any chances you'll have an open seat at one of your D&D games for an old-timer?
