The Actuator - October 16th

Level 17

In Austin this week for THWACKcamp. I hope you're watching the event and reading this post later in the day. We tried a new format this year--I hope you enjoy what we built.

As always, here are some links I found interesting this week. Enjoy!

GitHub renews controversial $200,000 contract with ICE

“At GitHub, we believe in empowering developers around the world. We also believe in basic human rights, treating people with respect and dignity, and cold, hard, cash.”

NASA has a new airplane. It runs on clean electricity

I hope this technology doesn't take 30 years to come to market.

Revealed: the 20 firms behind a third of all carbon emissions

Maybe we need to work on electric projects for these companies instead.

WeWork expected to cut 500 tech roles

It seems every week there's another company collapsing under the weight of the absurdity of the business model.

Visa, MasterCard, Stripe, and eBay all quit Facebook’s Libra in one day

I don't understand why they were involved to begin with.

Linus Torvalds isn't concerned about Microsoft hijacking Linux

Microsoft is absolutely a different company. It's good to see Linus acknowledge this.

Elizabeth Warren trolls Facebook with 'false' Zuckerberg ad

Here's a thought - maybe don't allow any political ads on Facebook. That way we don't have to worry about what is real or fake. Of course that can't happen, because Facebook wants money.

The leaves have turned, adding some extra color to the fire circle.

Go NASA! very cool design.

Thanks for the articles!  I agree - ban all political ANYTHING on FB.

GitHub and ICE.   Won't it be great one day when we're all one world, all on the same team, all helping each other, building bridges instead of walls?

My first look at that electric NASA plane confused me--no wings!

But lower down, MANY props & electric motors.  Sort of like home-drone tech turned on its side.

The worst sources of carbon pollution?   Aren't they just the enablers making money off us for their petroleum?

We're the real root cause.

The solution? You've heard it. Do you walk the walk?

Reduce, reuse, recycle, think globally and act locally. Those are the paths to using less petroleum, cleaner air, less pollution, less sickness, fewer people, better standards of living and quality of life.

WeWork sure is looking & sounding like Enron.

Libra losing support is unfortunate for those who dreamed big, but maybe allowing Facebook to have even more views into our personal data & finances was a bad idea from the start.

I'm behind Linus Torvald.  I hope he's not wrong about MS.  You know what they say--"F00l me once . . ."

Fake political ads on Facebook has got to stop.  I see no difference between lies originated by domestic and foreign influencers.

Great as always sqlrockstar

We Work is just the latest "Sharing Economy" failures. I honestly don't believe that this idea works beyond a small scale.
Some of these ideas remind me of the "dot com" bubble failures! (e.g. "Send.Ccm ("The Giver").

How does it fly? It doesn't even have wings!

NASA took delivery, they aren't really doing anything but buying someone else's tech?

Almost all Oil Companies. I'm a consumer of a lot of these every time I fill up my tank so it's actually me (us) that create demand for the oil giants.

It's me that need to get an electric vehicle.

Level 14

find me a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton pickup so I can tow my trailer and the like that is electric and does cost and arm and a leg.... I'm in!

I love the leaves.   Living in florida, we get green, then green, then green, then brown dead, then green.   Lather, rinse, repeat.

I think the wings are being brought in through the hangar door via forklift in this picture, aren't they?

Further down the article is a picture / video link showing its wings and 12 engines:

Regarding WeWork, can anybody provide a good reason why they are superior to a home office? I doubt it but I have an open mind.

Libra: HA HA HA

Microsoft may try to hijack Linux, eliminating a competitior, but the Linux community won't allow that to happen.
