The Actuator – February 6th

Spent the weekend making feijoada to have for the Big Game this past Sunday. If you found the game, commercials, and halftime show to be boring, I wanted you to know I had 7 different parts of a pig in a stew over rice. In a way, we are all winners.

As always, here are some links from the Intertubz that I hope will hold your interest. Enjoy!

"5,000 troops to Colombia"? Nation responds to Bolton's note

Weekly reminder that when it comes to data security and privacy, our elected (and appointed) leaders provide the worst examples of "what not to do."

Microsoft accidentally deletes customer DBs

One of the perils of automation: when you make a mistake, it affects thousands of objects. Whoops.

Rethinking Informed Consent

"…the important questions aren't around how our data is used, but where our data travels." Yes, so much yes to this. It’s time we all understand how our data is being used.

Facebook pays teens to install VPN that spies on them

I don’t understand how Facebook is still in business. What does a company have to do to be shut down these days? At this point, Zuckerberg could club a seal on Pier 39 and no one would care.

An 'acoustic fingerprint' should keep Alexa from waking during Amazon's Super Bowl ad

I was wondering about this, and why my Alexa seemed to be ignoring the television. Now I’m wondering if someone could hack my device to have it ignore, or redirect, other commands.

Gym Class Is So Bad, Kids Are Skipping School to Avoid It

Interesting data here, trying to correlate increased gym time with student disciplinary actions. Setting that possible correlation aside, the current structure of PE classes is, indeed, horrible.

Data is expensive

"...more data isn’t always better." Wonderful post from Seth on the cost of data.

  • Bolton's note

Great example of simple "security." I wonder how often we (the big general we as in everyone, etc.) give away information, queues, keys, secrets, etc. in very obvious ways, i.e. talking on the phone and responding to the question such as what's your social security number, phone number, credit card number. Or we look at the secret hiding place when someone questions "where's the secret hiddend item?" It's part of how society has changed and we need to begin thinking of security as part of our lifestyle. As a friend of mine coined the "Zero Trust" movement in IT and we need to begin implementing this in all areas of our lives. Don't write something down and carry your notepad facing out. Don't leave it on your desk facing up. Don't put your password on a sticky note and post it in your cube, or your drawer, or under your desk or well you get the idea.

    Data is expensive

Yes, Yes, Yes. For years the price of IT has been going down - computer is cheaper, storage is cheaper, machines are more efficient so cheaper to run. So what do we do - celebrate and reap the rewards of savings? Nope - we buy bigger because bigger is always better. We store more because more is always better and so on and so on. This was an article that made some good points. We all know that person - maybe you are that person - that knows everything about everything. They are the ones that always need all the attention and they always have to interject something into every conversation. Just because you have more data doesn't mean that data is more valuable or useful.

  • permission granted in the knowledge of the possible consequences, typically that which is given by a patient to a doctor for treatment with full knowledge of the possible risks and benefits.

I continue to advise of the possible consequences... get ignored a lot .. and thanks for letting us know ... when will I be the scapegoat ?   NOT!

  • Rethinking Informed Consent - True, true, true, true....

  • Microsoft accidentally deletes customer DBs - Another instance of what had happened in the past

  • Unbelievable - looks like the site is stable now..... still don't have a good feeling about this one...
