The Actuator - February 19th

Level 17

This edition of the Actuator comes to you from my kitchen, where I'm enjoying some time at home before I hit the road. I'll be at RSA next week, then Darmstadt, Germany the following week. And then I head to Seattle for the Microsoft MVP Summit. This is all my way of saying future editions of the Actuator may be delayed. I'll do my best, but I hope you understand.

As always, here's a bunch of links I hope you will find useful. Enjoy!

It doesn’t matter if China hacked Equifax

No, it doesn't, because the evidence suggests China was but one of many entities that helped themselves to the data Equifax was negligent in guarding.

Data centers generate the same amount of carbon emissions as global airlines

Machine learning, and bitcoin mining, are large users of power in any data center. This is why Microsoft has announced they'll look to be carbon neutral as soon as possible.

Delta hopes to be the first carbon neutral airline

On the heels of Microsoft's announcement, seeing this from Delta gives me hope many other companies will take action, and not issue press releases only.

Apple’s Mac computers now outpace Windows in malware and virus

Everything is terrible.

This is going to get ugly to watch. You stay right there, I'll go grab the popcorn.

How to Add “Move to” or “Copy to” to Windows 10’s Context Menu

I didn't know I needed this until now, and now I'm left wondering how I've lived so long without this in my life.

Our new Sunday morning ritual is walking through Forest Park. Each week we seem to find something new to enjoy.

Thanks for the Articles

Surrrrre, this is NOT an attempt to get me to say something negative about China or Equifax, because they know everything I do that's important and unimportant, and that will get me in trouble with one or the other, or both . . . .

Rather than criticize a company who controls/influences my credit rating, or a country that practices extreme control over their citizens (or anyone who grows a beard, practices a religion, says something Chinese officials don't approve of, etc.) . . .   Hey, how 'bout those Minnesota Vikings!

Data center emissions, carbon footprints, waste, expense . . .       It would be nice to find a way to do without the negative aspects that come with big data (or any data).  This is one area in which we can hide from the truths and still be burned by them.

I'm encouraged that more electric is being generated from green / renewable resources, and less comes from polluting sources.  If a data center could use 100% non-carbon-emitting fuel sources, and could recycle its heat to where it's needed (it's -10 F here in Minnesota this morning), that might be a way to both save money and generate income.

If we had all-electric aircraft, so they wouldn't consume petroleum products and create CO2 and heat pollution, maybe we'd also have quieter airports and skies.

Of course the airplanes' construction would still cause pollution, consume petroleum / plastic products and steel.  But it's quite a claim to say an airline is now carbon-neutral  It sounds good, but until someone talks about the plastic & steel & heat & toxic chemicals/gases generated in all the parts of constructing an airplane, I'll keep a health bit of skepticism on the claim.

Running an airline solely on solar electric or hydroelectric or wind sources would be quite a feather in someone's cap!

ZER0 electric plane by Joe Doucet could be the Tesla of the skies

Chrome supports large numbers of extensions that get installed and begin spying on us, stealing our data--right from the Google Play Store?  Whatever happened to "Don't be evil"?  Well, maybe it never really was  "a thing" that mattered with Google, if not being evil didn't increase market share or didn't bring in tons of money & data.

When Amazon filed suit against the DOD and their JEDI contract award winner, Amazon claimed undue influence on the decision by our president.

An American president would NEVER abuse his power, right?  Well, we can see how THAT thought went . . .

Thank you for the tips on the hidden Windows 10 Move To and Copy To commands!

I really appreciate the articles, especially the positive ones. Please keep it up!

There was a time when Apple/Mac's were leaders in the virus world. Enter MS Windows and they occupied the hot seat.... and now we swing back the other way.

Sad reality is the bad behavior is more profitable than good behavior. (leave the ethical discussions for another day!)

Love the move to/copy to....

Big help for me sqlrockstar

Kudos!!!!

Level 14

Carbon neutral is a thought provoking and debate starting concept.

Something to ponder....

As we are all "carbon units".... I wonder if we can truly ever neutralize ourselves?

Level 14

I am fairly certain that the Chinese Government could market something to me that I would buy based on the information they have collected.

Paranoid.... no.... realistic .... yes sir!

Level 13

it would be nice if a government actually moved forward with carbon reducing policies, instead of cap and trade...

Thanks for the articles.

Thanks for the articles!

It's handy to not have to copy and paste each time... I've seen this before even years ago with Windows XP machines.  Did you make that video yourself Tom of the water?

I'm happy that the Actuator survived the transition!

Between Equifax and the OPM breach of all of our SF-86's I've really just assumed most data is out there... zero trust is right!

Its just a shame with Equifax and Google.  My coworkers are not helping much by spreading their conspiracy theories!!! Too many bad actors amongst us!

TRUST NO ONE!
