Lawrence Garvin- So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish

There’s no way to write a good opening sentence for this post.  Yesterday we lost Head Geek Lawrence Garvin, who passed away of natural causes at home.  He’ll be missed by more than all the admins he interacted with on thwack, the huge TechNet community he touched in a decade as a devoted Microsoft MVP, the Houston Rodeo and other organizations  where he volunteered, and of course most of all by his family.  I will miss my friend.

Lawrence taught me more about how to be a productive technical creative, wonderfully curmudgeonly yet optimistic when published, opinionated yet receptive in debate, and above all how to dig in when you’re right, than anyone I’ve met.  Yes he occasionally sent terrifically long emails, but they were always worth the read, each word with a purpose.  The Exchange server won’t miss them, but the Geek team certainly will.

The next SolarWinds Lab will be his last (taped) appearance, and the prospect of his first absence from live chat is difficult to imagine.  However, the video team is putting together a tribute and we’ll get the whole gang together for signoff, so if you’re a fan of Lawrence you’ll want to be there.  I found a couple of fun Lab promos today and linked them below, as well as our first episode when it was just the two of us trying to figure out what the heck we were doing.

Larry, you’ll live on in thousands of posts on admin communities all over the world, your articles and among your friends here.  Thanks for spending this time with us.

Thanks Brian.  It was just the two of us for years before I got to expand the team, and he really knew what he was talking about.  We actually had a couple of thwack folks take pictures of us at tradeshows with them, I'd love to see those again.  If you have one feel free to post.

Life is fleeting. We all live, love, and, sadly, lost. I did not know Lawrence Garvin personally but I watched him many times. He seemed like a very pleasant man and someone I would have like to have known. I feel for his family and his friends. The world could use more Garvin's. My condolences to the Solarwinds family.

Level 9

Very sorry and shocked to hear the news.  He did not seem that old....

To all who knew him, my thoughts are with you on this difficult time.

I thought he personified very well the "old school" tech, introvert, silent, not flamboyant, funny.

Rest in Peace.

It is never a good day when you lose someone that meant so much to so many! However, his legacy will benefit us all for a long time to come. For everyone out there, I plan to lift a drink in his honor and to celebrate his life, not his passing...you are welcome to join me.

I've interacted with Lawrence since 2005 when SUS was relatively new and he and I provided many of the answers on the SUS mailing list - I had moved to various other jobs, different priorities, etc. until we met up again (in person for the first time) at Spiceworld in 2013.  It was cool to put a face with the name.  He was an incredible resource and was always willing to help (albeit a bit dry with his humor!), but always spot on with his knowledge.  My thoughts with his family (both at home and at work).

His knowledge will live on for years to come - he has a huge legacy.

Rest in peace, Lawrence.

A great geek gone.  He will be missed, they few times I met him he was nothing but kind, helpful and a very respectful person.

I will miss him on the video's and labs.

Level 14

I attended my first SW lab last week and got to enjoy the presentation.  It was very informational and funny, which is a hard thing to do.  Anyway, I join my fellow Thwackers in giving my condolences to the SolarWinds and Garvin families. Lawrence will be greatly missed indeed.

So sad to hear the news. The few times we spoke it was clear he was a man you respected and his presence in the Labs videos will be sorely missed. I send my condolences to his family and the SolarWinds team he leaves behind. RIP

Level 20

Life is fleeting and terminal... we all know that.  However it's never easy to see someone we've known and spent a lot of time around pass.  The labs will be different now without him... he sure made his mark on us all and that's good and how we should remember him.  He made the lab more fun to learn in.
