Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2020

Level 13

October is here! Halloween is around the corner, even though it will be a bit different this year. The smells of cinnamon, pumpkin spice, and cider are more prevalent, and, for those not in south Texas, leaves are changing, and cooler weather has arrived. More importantly though, October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month here in the U.S. and this year’s theme is “Do Your Part. #BeCyberSmart.” At SolarWinds, we’re here to do our part and raise awareness. I recently blogged about raising the topic of online security with our friends and families, and October’s arrival gives us the chance to further raise awareness.

What Do We Mean by “Cybersecurity?”

The term cybersecurity covers measures taken to protect systems, networks, applications, mobile devices, etc. from digital attacks. There are many methods used to accomplish these protection measures, which can include anti-virus software, user education, automated and manual responsive actions, logging, multi-factor authentication, and more.

Cybersecurity Is Everyone’s Responsibility.

Every user has a responsibility to get educated and do their part. I can hear the groans already… I know sometimes security can seem like a pain and sometimes it adds extra time to a task, but it’s essential to protect ourselves and our businesses from known attack vectors where we can. It may take a few extra seconds to validate the email link before clicking it but will save a world of heartache if it was a scam.

So, we encourage you to join us this month in raising cybersecurity awareness in your circles. Have a conversation or two with your kids, parents, colleagues, whomever. Take measures you may have been waiting on to get multi-factor authentication set up. Bring up any security holes you’ve found with your company’s security team and start conversations around improving security now it’s clear this remote work thing isn’t going away.

What Can You Look Forward to From SolarWinds Regarding Cybersecurity?

The SolarWinds Public Sector Cyber Security Survey Report 2020 published earlier this year shared findings from 400 IT decision makers and influencers in the public sector.

Listen to our recent TechPod episode, where we delve into research we did with IDC around the challenges Security Operations and IT Operations see in working separately, and how to work together more efficiency—Accelerating Transformation With Security and Operations Collaboration Best Practices.

October’s THWACK Monthly Mission is all security-themed, so make sure you check it out and be entered to win some sweet prizes.

On October 12 there will be a new quiz: Are You Audit-Ready?

The SolarWinds Lab episode on October 14 is “Building a Zero-Trust Model With SolarWinds Security Tools.” This is a great opportunity to gain clarity on using the SolarWinds tools to help you build a better zero-trust foundation. Register now.

Looking further ahead, November’s THWACKcamp will include a Security Keynote. Register for this two-day event, which will be packed with lots of interesting information and conversation spanning IT, including security.

As always, I encourage you to participate in discussions here on THWACK and out in this wild world to improve cybersecurity awareness and practices. Threats are always evolving, so it’s imperative we evolve our protection practices with it.
