Bracket Battle 2018: Round 1 Recap

Level 15

Anyone else already #BracketBusted?

If you came to root for the underdogs in this year’s bracket battle, you are going to be sorely disappointed.

Across the board the titans of the bracket stomped out the little guys.

Dog v spider, sounds like the title of a viral YouTube video, no? In the end, the arachnid didn’t stand a chance against the hound of Hades.

Let’s take a look at how our legends fared in round 1, shall we?

Shutouts:

  • - rschroeder gave us some insight into why the Phantom Kangaroo didn’t stand a chance in this match-up: “No one ever named a team of war planes The Fabulous Phantom Kangaroos."
  • - Looking at the numbers ¾ of you agreed with tinmann0715’s sentiments “Chupacabra should win going away. It's legend is just too powerful for the White Stag to overcome. I expect the Chupacabra to go far in this tourney...”
  • - The comments were conflicted for this match-up, but the votes were clear. Nessie FTW with 80% of the vote!
  • - I’m with thegreateebzies on this one, “Looks like my faves are all losing in the first round. Everyone knows the Jackalope is the greatest...” #TeamJackalope #JackalopeIsNoJoke
  •   - Looks like the little mermaid lost in a – what do you call it? Landslide!
  • - ecklerwr1 summed this one up nicely, “Easy one... Frankenstein Monster takes one look at Medusa and is turned to stone... done deal!!!”
  • - In the end, this match was decided by popularity instead of actual physical strength and abilities as noted in the comments. This is what makes Bracket battle so unpredictable and awesome!
  • -  I was really curious how this match was going to go since both of these legends have been prominent in pop-culture in recent years. I definitely thought this was going to be a nail-bitter. It seems sparkling skin won out over rotting flesh at the end of the day.
  • - Cerberus’s victory from the play-in round was short lived. Kraken torpedoed its way to round 2!
  • - Without question this was the most magically delicious match-up we’ll see in this bracket. In the end it was the fighting Irish who took this one.
  • - Once again the comments had me on the edge of my seat, but this turned out to be one of the biggest shutouts of round 1. Dragon FTW with a commanding lead over its single-horned opponent.
  • - joshyaf summed this one better than I could, “Birds. Eat. Snakes. Boom.” There you have it, folks.

Nail-biters:

  • - This one really could have gone either way as these two opponents were the most equally matched pair of round 1. The abominable snowman left our forested friend with frostbite and manages to roll into round 2.
  • - This half & halfs match-up was nearly split 50/50! It came down to a photo finish in favor of Pegasus!
  • - rschroeder's commentary explains where it all went downhill for the Manticore: “Manticore is the bigger threat.  But the Minotaur has more terror and less horror, given it's half man / half male bovine, lives in a maze that you'd never find your way out of before it got you, and the depictions I've seen have all imagined the Minotaur's Labyrinth to be all in the dark.  There's nothing quite like knowing there's a scary thing in the dark hunting you to increase your terror . . .”
  • - I really can’t argue with zennifer’s statement on this one “Yeah.. you need to be afraid of anything with a SHE in its name!” Though this was a close call, the Banshee earned her victory shrieks this round.

As weird as some of these creatures are the match-ups seem to be going pretty smoothly!

I was surprised with a few of the trends, and I suspect popular fiction/culture (video games, and movies like Harry Potter), creatures came out on top that probably would have been losers pre-Tech Bubble.  I'm thinking specific examples:

  • Mermaids were known to be flesh-eating creatures, while centaurs were not.  But pop culture has made Centaurs (see Bane from Harry Potter, and others) into more impressive creatures, while Mermaids have been de-terror-ized as simple objectified women, and further demystified as bad depictions of Manatees.
  • Hippogriffs would have been easy winners over a simple flying horse, but again, pop culture made the beautiful Pegasus come out on top.
  • Gaming and terror genres have lessened the power of a troll in relationship to that of a Banshee, where one would easily expect a Troll to crush/squeeze a Banshee instantly.

Now it's on to the more challenging level, where many of the "easy" foes have already been eliminated.

Level 14

I'm surprised there wasn't the fabled werewabbott.  I suppose it wouldn't have been a fair contest.  Everyone would have voted for the warewabbott. It's also a SHE.

Perhaps the biggest Pop Culture surprise and impact, to me, was the Phoenix : Baselisk round.  Certainly the Harry Potter franchise had a major upsetting impact here, since the Phoenix defeated the Baselisk there, despite the size and strength and magical power of a Baselisk being apparently superior to any Phoenix, whose original powers seemed to be simply being able to rise from its own ashes.  If it had made eye contact with the Baselisk, it would have been defeated at a distance.  But The Chamber of Secrets showed it attacking from above and behind--in the blind spot of the Baselisk--eliminating the snake's eyes as weapons.  Pre-Harry Potter, I believe this round would have been owned by the Baselisk.

I predicted a lot of these right so I am feeling good going into rd 2.

LOL Beware the WereWabbott!

Level 12

Well, the Basilisk lost so count me out.  No extra sweet, sweet thwack points for me. Oh well, may the annihilation continue!

I guess you are right ....   my dreams have been disrupted, I should not be looking up all those pictures!

No, NO!  WereWabbotts are too gruesome, TOO FIERCE!

This one wasn't safe for pasting into the forum--too graphic.

I'm not much of a follower of fantasy, but this is interesting and bringing along some interesting comments.

Can you beat a beast that never stays dead?

I don't know, maybe you could take some time off. Just let these sweet thwack point go unclaimed. Clearly I am not trying to stay with you on the leader board.

Bigfoot would easily win most Legendary elusive creature.

There is someone close to me that I have been trying to pass for weeks.  They saw my quick gain and began to elevate rapidly into the top 800.  I am closing in, but I fear there are just not enough things to do and questions to answer to increase even quicker!

That depends on your definition of "beat".  One fighter can beat another without one dying.

My impression is this is a battle bracket, and battle is in the traditional physical fight format.  Between the two, a basilisk seems to have the advantage in size and strength.  Further, with eyes capable of incapacitating a foe, all it need do is keep it's eye on a Phoenix to permanently incapacitate it, causing it (at best) to continually be forced to reincarnate over and over.

Play the long game, day to day the people around you will go up and down.  Go take some live training, do some beta/RCs. Volunteer for UX sessions. The On boarding mission shouldn't be skipped ( https://thwack.solarwinds.com/community/solarwinds-community/announcements/blog/2017/10/06/you-dont-... ) and the polls don't expire.

Here's a comparison of the Top 10 Leaderboard point totals since last October 31, 2017.  There have been opportunities to gain over 100K points since then.  If you're chasing points and haven't seen these opportunities, you have some great ones to get you additional points.  But they take extra time and effort to earn.

Glad you posted the above rschroeder !  I saw the comment regarding points, and the inability to gain momentum,  and thought ... "you are not a true thwackie yet"  There is so much to do, so much to read and learn,  I wish I could spend all day Thwacking around!  This is quite a nice game; I look forward to what is going to happen next!  bdufresne you have just started your journey.  Visit often, comment often, get stimulated by your peers in THWACK at least once a day and before you know it, you won't recognize your competition - go after the leaders!!!

3 of 4 still alive for me.

Allow me to piggyback onto this:

I am still doing well in this pool. Muuuuuch better than my already-torn-up NCAA brackets. I am jonsing to keep voting though. I can't wait for the next round to open.

I'm still in shock at the drop bear loss!

Level 12

I don't feel like I've just started, but I guess I did really just get started with trying to help folks troubleshoot.  I can only imagine how dangerous I would be to the competition if I had a live instance of SolarWinds that I actually ran, rather than using it to look at other people's devices every once in a while.

I added Drop Bear and Phantom Kangaroo for my Aussie friends.

Sorry they both got knocked out in round 1!

ROUND 3..........................

Level 14

Just a bit premature.  I got the e-mail early too.

Level 12

Oh, believe me, I've done a lot of that.  I just can't do the live training yet as we don't have an active maintenance license.  I am a SolarWinds auditor for my company, so I make sure other people's environments are correctly configured and I do a lot of back-end SQL reporting.  I would share some of those queries, but the network I am doing it on is air gapped, so I can't just upload it to thwack.

Level 12

I actually tried to post a geek speak blog post, but wasn't able to.  I know there are a lot of points to be earned, I just haven't had the time to research them further.  I am also trying to host a SWUG for some of my fellow DoD counterparts, but am having trouble getting traction on that at the moment.  One day soon, hopefully, I will catch up.

Level 12

I didn't see most of these replies to me, only yours!  I am on a DoD network, so sometimes the site bugs out a bit for me.  I look at my inbox/feed and see one reply, but often times not others.  zennifer that is also an interesting choice of photos, lol.

Level 14

I've got the same issue.  Can't do live training because we run SAM as a managed service through a 3rd party.  That means no customer portal access and no training (and no Thwack points).  Daft really as I still configure and manage SAM and can make decisions as to whether we use other Solarwinds products or go to a different vendor.  Other vendors have given me access to their training even though we don't currently use their products.

Level 12

It's even worse since I work for a SolarWinds partner company, but we have not pursued an NFR until recently.  It's all good though, we just need to vocalize this with our account managers and work to get it resolved.  I've had some really good account managers with SolarWinds that do their best to help us out.  You just need to reach out!

Level 14

Yes.  I did this with the Managed Service Provider.  They got nowhere with Solarwinds.  I then raised it directly with Solarwinds (during a UX on the new portal design) and got nowhere.  I raised it on here and got a response that they were looking into a more granular portal which would accommodate people in our situation.  Not heard anything further though.  They will need to get a move on as things may change here.  If we end up moving a lot of stuff to the cloud I will push to get the Orion platform brought in house (or change to another platform).  It's too slow and clunky where it currently is.

Level 12

Well, I wish I knew who to tag to help you out, I'm on the federal side so I don't know a lot of the non-fed account managers.  Good luck on your quest!

Hope I did not go too far with the cartoon above!  I apologize if I offended anyone.

Coordinate / obtain permission from the Chief Geeks, and post your submission as a Draft after you get their approval.  Then get some comments and advice from them for improvements, tweak any typos or grammar errors, and publish it.  I find it particularly satisfying (more so when a post of mine ends up being appreciated / well-received).

Level 12

I spent a few years in the military, hard to really offend me after working with some real interesting people. lol.

Level 12

Thanks for that, I've already got a draft for one, now I just need to get it in motion!

Sometimes corporate / government filters block your access, and doing work from home or public WiFi / Hotspots may be your most reliable (if least secure) option to stay up to date and to contribute regularly to Thwack.
