Alternate Actuator: The Bacon Edition

With humble admiration and praise for sqlrockstar and his weekly Actuator, I wonder if it might be time for an alternate Actuator. August, aka the "silly season," is just around the corner. The silly season's heat and high population density tend to make people behave differently than they would if they were cool, calm, and collected. That's why I am considering an alternate Actuator, one that will focus on the silly to honor August.

August is hot. And sweaty. And sweat is salty. And what could be better than connecting something hot with something salty, like bacon?

From Amazon.

Now THERE'S something I don't see every day.  Next thing they'll do is have these little beauties plug into the Christmas Light string, heat up, and send out some bacon scents across the air for your scents-around pleasure.

"But wait--THAT'S NOT ALL!"

Also from Amazon.  Who knew?

rschroeder and sqlrockstar  I submit the following photo taken this weekend for the "bacon edition"

Yes, this makes me become thoughtful, and start to nod.

Good one!

Ya... I saw this Saturday and took the picture.. my wife gave me a strange look when I told her why I did it....

Enjoy!

Well, now I have a lot more information toward my heart stoppage.

If you're seriously (or humorously) into that topic, have you visited the Heart Attack Grill in Las Vegas?

Last I read, four people have died at this franchise that specializes in food bad for your arteries.

I've never been there, but I've always wanted to try it.

I haven't made these, but I'd like to try a bite or two of one!  At least they're small.

I need to see if Ginger Browns might try and make these or a variation of them.

They are a small hole in the wall restaurant on the west side of Fort Worth  and renowned for their cinnamon rolls....

At the fire department there is a family that drops of a dozen (2 boxes) pretty much every week...still warm.

Nothing but pure sugary, cinnamony, doughy goodness.  Truly a diabetics bane !

Level 20

Nice to hear some people still support their local firefighters and law enforcement population.  They do, after all, save and protect people... which seems to me to be a pretty good idea to support!

MVP
MVP

Out in the rural areas there tends to be a lot more support and not as much taken for granted.

There are a couple of groups who cold-call me on the land line at home soliciting funds for local firefighters or sheriffs associations.  Talk about a quandary!  Are these valid?  Are they scams?  Are they trying to prey on my guilt and make me worry "If I don't send money, will the firemen take their time getting to my house, or will they be without important safety equipment because people keep voting for politicians who continually cut taxes?  Will I get the rural law enforcement I need, or will the money I donate go to line someone's pocket as they fund a trip to the Bahamas?"

I don't like saying "yes, here's some money" and I don't like saying "no, I'm not comfortable knowing the money is needed and will go to the actual local emergency services people who support my neighborhood."

Uff da!

MVP
MVP

rschroeder, for the cold calls I don't honor them because you really don't know who is on the other end.

All of our fund raisers are held at the department or at a local location in person so there are faces and representation.

Level 20

Yeah many are not exactly on the level I think.  I get them too.  I must have a dozen different groups calling for donations all related to this.  I think what you have to do is find a local station or department you know and then donate to them with you initiating the communication.

Level 20

Exactly what I was thinking.

Level 14

I get these as well..

Some department do use these services to solicit donations... (my town included)... As I live 1000 ft from both police and fire... I walk the check down..

MVP
MVP

That is even better...then you can shake a hand and tell the people on the front lines Thank you....

Also then your kids can climb on the trucks and take pictures.

In some cases there are organizations that do make those solicitations, but only a small amount actually makes it to the organization as most goes into overhead and admin fees.

The people on the phone can't provide the balance sheets to show how much actually makes it...I have a problem with people making a living off of getting donations for volunteer fire departments and sheriff's organizations.

Level 14

I have started to take my grandkids to the police/firestation on holidays (Christmas, Easter) to drop off some goodies at the station... I explain to the older ones (9,8 and 4+) that not everyone gets to enjoy the holiday and in particular the police and fire departments have to be on duty to help and protect people. They get to meet them and occasionally turn on a siren, climb on the fire truck or ring the bell... Living in a small town and knowing most of the team (I coached all of the younger ones in baseball, softball and football)... Everyone has fun and enjoys it.

I have the game pass the pig...   its quite fun, its like a dice game where the dice a pigs.....

Pass_the_pigs_dice.jpg

My wife discovered Pass The PIg about 2003, and it became an instant hit with my family while waiting for food at restaurants.  Our two kids enjoyed it as a way to pass the time, and the innovative point names (My personal favorite is "the Snouter") claimed their interest.

The Pigs became an insight into our children's acceptance or aversion to risk.  My son would continually bet it all, hoping to clean house.  My daughter always quit after three rolls of the pigs, figuring she was best to play conservatively and win by watching others lose it all.

But lest this become about pigs instead of bacon:

Back in December we had a family we had gathered gifts, food, and numerous things for.

One of the games that was included was one called "pop the pig" which we gave to one of the local police officers as a joke.

It was a rather humorous picture...
