Day 25 - Platform

Level 9

When I think of the word platform, my first thought may not be your first thought. I immediately think of a social media platform: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn. Knowing this, it probably doesn’t surprise you to learn I work under Allie Eby (please read her entry if you haven’t already) as a Social Media Marketing Manager. I am also a millennial (though I HATE that word), so social media has been a huge part of my life for the better part of 10 years.

Social media has changed a lot since the early days, when it truly was just about connecting with friends, sharing photos, and being entertained. Though it still holds those aspects at its core (I have had the pleasure of exchanging funny gifs and banter with many of you on Twitter), it has also turned into a marketing platform, a political platform, and a news platform. When asked where I consume most of my news in my interview for this position, I hesitantly said Twitter, and Allie immediately reassured me she was in the same boat. I won’t get into the political uses, but I think we all know it has become a part of every political campaign. As for the marketing side of social media, I quite literally would not be employed in my current position if it weren’t a reality (shameless plug to stop everything and go follow SolarWinds on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram).

Just as the usage and core purpose of social media has changed through the years, so has the very definition of what we consider a social platform to be. Just for fun, I looked up the definition, and Merriam–Webster defines it as: forms of electronic communication (such as Web sites) through which people create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, etc.

Sound familiar? The more I thought about the meaning of social media, I began to realize THWACK is a social platform of its own! It certainly allows you to share information, ideas, and personal messages just as the definition states, and it has created a community of people who enjoy interacting with one another, both virtually and in person. I had the pleasure of meeting some of the THWACK MVPs during THWACKcamp in October, and it was great to see the online community come to life, the THWACK IDs and Twitter handles I had come to recognize becoming real people right before my eyes.

Whether you love or hate social media, you have to admit it gives people the opportunity to have a voice. That voice may be used for sharing silly cat videos, arguing about politics, or providing tips and advice for how best to use SolarWinds products. Whatever the use, everyone deserves to have a platform. I’m glad you have all have found one in THWACK.

My first thought for platform is one for doing manual work on - a strong, stable platform enables you to work safely, because everything you do has to come from the floor you stand/sit/lie on. Without a strong base from which to operate, you're just endangering yourself and others around you.

I think of an older version of platform which is similar to sierra1011 but used for a different purpose. Something from which to speak or as in politics something about which to speak. The major parties in the US today publish their official platforms at the conventions. Each item or concept is a plank in the platform. It isn't the place from which to speak or communicate that social media is, but what to speak about.

My mind went straight to platform shooters. One of the first computer games I played was Commander Keen and I was immediately hooked. Playing more and more games over the years and learning about computers and their different components, led me to an interest in networking. That then led to network monitoring and SolarWinds. All from that initial spark while playing platform games.

Back in 1963 my father built a wooden platform that measured four feet by six feet.  He placed it about four feet up in some trees for me, not too far from our new home.  Complete with ladder and railings, it was my tree house / fort / rocket ship / jet / imaginarium.  Some times it was the Flying Sub from Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea, or even the Seaview itself.  Other times it was Fireball XL-5, or Stingray, or some command tower from which I could control my destiny and the world around me.

Always, it was a base of operations.  Sometimes a place to run to for safety. Most times it was a place to be carefree, to smell the clean air, to listen to the wind in the leaves.  It was at its best when it became a place to share with friends and leverage our imaginations as we played "Let's Pretend!"

Reviewing the earlier submissions, I easily see a parallel between that old wooden platform, upon which ideas and imagination were built and subsequently sprang forth, and the solid state virtual "platform" upon which applications are installed to perform their tasks.

Where programmers and teams collaborate to build upon the ideas of a single person, so too did my tree house platform promote new ideas in my imagination.  It enabled me to create and share ideas with others in a tree-borne microcosm that was our local "social media" environment.  What started out as a place for sharing ideas with friends and receiving ideas of improvements or praise from them, has grown to be the Thwack environment and the world beyond, where we share ideas and receive input and ideas around the world for improvements.

Those childhood habits of creating new ideas and elaborating upon them are how dreams and programs and businesses and organizations are born and grow.  The imagination of an entrepreneur, coupled with guidance and assistance from someone as simple a father willing to "bootstrap" the platform's ideas physically, financially, with thoughts and encouragement, are the ingredients that help make children greater than they were.  This support and these ideas are the building blocks of the Internet and business and society and countries.

What ideas will spring forth from your mind to create new platforms for applications and businesses and social improvements?

What new or existing platforms will you jump on board to help encourage their growth and success?

computing platform is the environment in which a piece of software is executed.

Platform shoes are something that lift someone up higher than they would be naturally.

A platform can lift and hold people or objects above a given property such as land, water, or other people.

Social platforms can lift our voices above the current area to reach many and have a more profound effect and outcome.

Lift - Provide support - these are how i think of the word platform.

Level 9

The word platform brings to mind software and operating systems of different varieties to me, however if you ask my daughter, she would tell you it's the shoes she didn't get for Christmas.

I'm old hat with SolarWinds Orion now-a-days.  I've been using the platform since around 2008 and when I purchased it - it was sold that way.  You buy a module (NPM) and you get the platform (what we're now calling "Core").  Thinking back, it may have even been invoiced that way.  Regardless, I think of platform as something that is a basis for sharing.  It can be an operating system sharing resources, it can be a website for sharing ideas, it can be a program that shares information.  Regardless, sharing resources is important.  This is one of the reasons that I love THWACK so much.  It creates a place where you can share your ideas, gripes, and even your undying love of something.

Regardless of how you think about platform, remember that sharing is caring.

It's Christmas, and I will use this platform to stand and say, but after being moderated, "Jesus Christ is King of kings and Lord of lords."

I love the picture. It brings back great memories of just a short time ago (which already seems like a year). If you don't remember me I was the one during introductions who bravely admitted that I still used AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). I had been an America Online subscriber since 1991 and kept my screen name throughout. And before then I was an avid BBS'er. These are all early examples of online platforms which led to today's social media landscape. Boy, do I remember a simpler, more innocent time. lol

These generations of online platforms served their intended purposes: To provide a steady footing and allow for growth and expansion to the next platform.

Yes, Thwack and this writing challenge has given me a platform to show my passion for writing. Each day, I see a word, and other words start coming together in my mind to aid me in showcasing the meaning or definition of the word as it appears to me at that moment in time. It's a great opportunity and privilege for me.

I see a platform as a foundation.- you build upon a foundation and the strength of the entire structure (whatever that would be) is dependent upon the foundation. How many times have great ideas crumbled because the underlying foundation wasn't what it should be. Websites that crash because they can't handle the load, buildings that last only a few years, relationships that are built upon superficial things rather than a deep connection.

Look to your platform and make sure it is strong in each area of your responsibilities.

Platform - what a word just within IT.

We used to have Mac and Windows platforms, Linux and UNIX ones. Lots of OSes were termed platforms. More recently, I hear platform used to describe more categories in the field. There are hardware platforms upon which all sorts of software (say, hypervisors) can stand. VMWare and Azure are platforms upon which can stand plenty of different VMs hosting servers with an array of OSes, virtual routers, switches, and firewalls, and applications running on top of those VMs. We even have Platform as a Service (PaaS) now.

There are more physical types of platforms. The synagogue in which I grew up had a central table from which services were led and speakers would address the congregation. It was large. The problem was, the rabbi and cantor were both on the shorter side. Platforms were built in - front and back - so the clergy or anyone else needing a boost could have a few extra inches to help them be seen or project a bit better. They came in particularly helpful when youngsters were leading the end of Shabbat morning services (the platform let them see over the edge of the table), though it was always slightly entertaining when the rabbi would walk up to give his sermon and suddenly get about six inches taller.

Stages are also platforms. There are great reasons to use these platforms: plays, concerts, and perhaps speeches. Some speeches made from platforms are not so physical, though we often refer to their planks: political platforms. No matter where you sit on the political spectrum, some of these are not so good. We just don't agree on which.

I used to work in an environment that constantly - based upon which individual company - had the "we are a Windows shop" or "We are a Mac shop" "discussions."

Finally they are generally embracing that we are a customer support shop and will support what they actually need. (then the "discussions" turned to BYOD or No)

Every day i get home from work and take my shoes off, I take a look at the big toe on my left foot and see it getting a little better. I dropped a platform on it last summer. The nail has almost grown back to its normal form now. We use the platform for our foam parties to set the dj system up on to keep it off the ground.

Platforms are a good foundation to build upon. No matter if it is a physical platform like the one we use for foam parties, or a virtual one like a server.

Haha, now you're sending me down memory lane with the original duke nukem! I did enjoy commander keen but literally duke was the first thing on my mind when it came to platform shooters. Video games both expanded my vocabulary and provided and interest in technology for me as well. I feel that basically being involved in technology has sparked more interest in being involved in technology. Effectively the platform.

Meanwhile, platforms can be neutral but they can also pose risk. It depends on how they're being used.

Level 14

I always think of platforms as a basic and stable foundation. Something solid to stand on while you acheive something even better. I guess if used properly, social media qualifies. The end result depends on the person. I suppose it is it's most vexing feature.

Time will be the judge.

Level 15

really LOVE sharing silly gifs with y’all!!! (#MVPLife)

this is one hits a little closer to home. the combination of THWACK and Twitter led me to networking throughout the SolarWinds community, and ultimately led me to being bamboozled convinced to work with jbiggley!

everyone deserves to have a platform

... and some of them should jump off of it

Three types of cloud services are Platform as a service, Software as a service and Infrastructure as a service

Level 12

What OS platform does the software work with.? The platform compatibility is very important so we do not run into issues during installation.

Level 9

I had to do away with social media for the most part. I spent way to much time looking at nothing I needed to see when I could be doing better things. That being said I do remember when I was first introduced to Facebook and social media. My cousin had spent a semester abroad in Europe and had all these photos of the places he'd been and things he'd done. He put them on Facebook so that his family could see and I created an account, that was the beginning of the end. lol

Level 21

When I hear the word Platform I think of the base or foundation from which you will build.  When every you begin to build anything regardless if it's physical, logical, or otherwise it's important to have a very clean and stable platform on which to build; everything you build will only be as stable as your platform from which you built.  This is true with all things in your life such as houses, infrastructure and relationships.

Level 9

Thanks for sharing! Love this idea: "Those childhood habits of creating new ideas, and elaborating upon them, are how dreams and programs and businesses and organizations are born and how they grow."

Level 9

Great connections! I completely agree. I like the idea that social platforms can give people the opportunity to voice opinions/connect with a wider audience, hopefully leading to a "more profound effect and outcome."

Level 9

Haha yes, one of my other initial thoughts was platform shoes.

Level 9

Lol yes I remember! RIP AOL.   I like that idea - that earlier platforms were there to allow for expansion to the next new thing.

Level 9

That's great to hear! I too have enjoyed reading all of the word-a-day submissions and thinking of how I relate to each word.

Level 9

And we LOVE seeing your silly gifs! Makes the job more fun for sure.

That is exactly what I like to hear. So great to find success stories like that, where social media and communities like THWACK lead to new opportunities!

Level 9

Haha I don't blame you! It can definitely be a time waster and reduce productivity if you aren't careful. But examples like your cousin sharing photos from abroad are what make social media special. I also studied abroad in college, and it was great to keep my friends and family feeling connected to all my travels through sharing photos and blog posts.

Level 20

One of the best things I did in 2017 was to install the android application "platform" for facebook from my, at the time, Nexus 6P phone.  If I really need to look at anything on FB I can use the browser... the way the app constantly sent notification all day long totally drove me frickin' crazy!!!  Since the uninstall I've never looked back and it's been much better since.  Now my new Pixel 2 XL Google phone will never have that application installed ever.

I took your best action a step further--I read the description of the things Facebook "required" access to in my Smartphone and never installed it at all.  Talk about a loss of privacy, and of someone else mining your Contacts and browsing history and bookmarks and on and on.

(You have a tiny typo--you missed "un" in your opening sentence)
