Day 20 - Fulfill

Level 18

(NOTE: Today's post comes to us from Anne Guidry, the editorial genius behind much of the content you see. She carefully edits and crafts pieces not just for grammar and spelling, but also for coherence (at least in my case) and consistency. Many of us would honestly sound like babbling idiots without her, and would thus fail to fulfill our mission at SolarWinds. - Leon)

Artist Agnes Martin said,

“Fulfill your potential. That’s the way to happiness.”

I was drawn to consider the word fulfill because it reminds me of another word that holds great meaning for me: effort. I believe in making an effort, showing up, doing the hard work that has to be done, because work that is hard is fulfilling. There is fulfillment in effort, even on the smallest scale. The word “fulfill” is usually tied to the word “dreams,” but I prefer less lofty aspirations, at least for now. Instead, my path to happiness – while my children are young – is guided by the hard work I do as a mother. There is magic in the mundane, I have learned, if you pay attention. And if you do the work. So step up, make an effort, and fulfill your potential, however you define that for yourself. Until you do, happiness will likely elude you.

Fulfill the things in your life to make you life count in this world. It is so good to know that I am making a difference in my life, with my Job, and at times with the world itself.

Level 10

I think there is always a human urge to find something that you find gives you fulfillment in life. A very human feeling.

If you found it already, that's SO AWESOME! very happy for you!

If you're still looking for that something that job or that one thing, KEEP AT IT! You can do eeet!

It's not an easy road, since everyone has a different feeling of when and what gives you that fulfillment, but it is worth it once you find it.

Level 11

For each of us there is something in life that will allow us to fulfill our lives and if we are lucky, those of our loved ones around us. My Dad left home when home when I was 10 and spent 40 years as an IT professional on mainframe computers. I grew up with a single Mom, went into the Marines, went to college after and met a wonderful woman. She wanted to children which was tough for me because of my past. In the end I decided l wanted to be with her and that I could make sure that my kids' lifes would be different from mine.  It has been a joy raising two beautiful kids to (at least so far) be good hardworking young adults. Every day I feel proud and fulfilled coming home, sharing their days, stories, lives, knowing that a little love and attention goes a long way in fulfilling the lives of my kids.  I can't wait to get home and give them a hug and see how their day went today.

The Hebrew word Chazown means vision or purpose. We are all created for a purpose or reason if you like. As we travel through life we spend a lot of time trying to be fulfilled but as we grow older, dare I say grow up - we come to learn that being fulfilled actually comes from fulfilling our purpose, or Chazown. Just like a hammer can sometimes do the job of a screwdriver (sort of) it can never really fulfill that purpose - it functions best for that which it is designed. So to the human life can never be fulfilled until one seeks to fulfill the Chazown for which they were created. One of the best steps that I've taken in life is to process this concept - for those interested there are free resources at:

Good! Your hate has made you powerful. Now, fulfill your destiny and take your father's place at my side!

Senator Palpatine

Fulfilling our destiny is a strange thing.  Sometimes, others try to tell us what our destiny is:

Who we should cheer for, vote for, or love.

What jobs we should have or who we should emulate "Why can't you be more like your brother?"

Sometimes, we do it to ourselves.  We look for fulfillment in our jobs, our hobbies, our fame, our success, our money and/or our loves.  Some find it.  Others live empty hollow lives even having fame or success or money.

What is the difference between those who are fulfilled and those who are not?

I think it comes down to two things:

Knowing what you were created to do.

And having a sense of mission or a why you do it.

Take Chick fil a for example.  Have you ever seen their mission statement?  It has nothing to do with selling chicken and yet they are one of the most successful fast food companies who give a great product with a great customer experience.

“To glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us. To have a positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-fil-A.”

Chick-fil-a Mission Statement

Fulfill your destiny.  Enjoy Life.  Put others first.  Create new things.  Think out of the box.

And be patient.  Instant gratification is not necessarily fulfillment.  I recently posted on social media about how much I love my new job and how fulfilling it is.  My son, who is 22 and very impatient, replied "Must be nice."  To which I replied "It is, and it only took 28 years of working to find patient"

Fulfilment is everywhere when you can be bothered to look - and when you are brave enough to realize it.

So often you see folks doing almost the same thing as you, but are not satisfied (or fulfilled) by it.

Then you realize that their own attitude is preventing them from achieving the benefit.

It's not about me is a good mantra, but sometimes it needs to be

Amazon better fulfill my orders before Christmas....  That will begin me great happiness and other too.

To fulfill your dreams is to chase them.  You will never accomplish your goals or dreams with out the right amount of effort.  We all probably want a full life, filled with joy and happiness.   Fulfill your dreams, chase those brass rings, smartly, and effectively,  and you will find how full life can be.

Level 11

bring to completion or reality; achieve or realize (something desired, promised, or predicted):

Amazon better fulfill my orders before Christmas....

ha ha ha ha ha

Level 11

Thwack order got fulfilled in 3 days. How nice it is. Got the hoodie.

Level 12

I look at fulfill(ment) as a blessing or a reward:

May he grant you your heart’s desire and fulfill all your plans! Psalm 20:4

Hard work and dedication to see things through is fulfilling.

Level 11

Fullfill no matter what

Sincere and generous collaboration is the best way to fulfil the legitimate aspirations of each person and achieve great collective goals for the common good and the general interest.

Day 20: Fulfill:
To put into effect, or to meet the requirements of (a business order), or to convert into reality.

Much job satisfaction comes from praise received when one can fulfill their responsibilities proactively and successfully.  If you want some to perform at their highest level of satisfaction, and sacrifice their personal time at home with family and friends, at least praise that person for doing a good job.  That recognition is the honey that works on top of salaried pay--pay which "should be enough", but that can be insufficient when working 60+ hours per week.  Saying "that's why they pay you the big bucks" is no way to create loyalty and job satisfaction.  But publicly recognizing someone for doing extra, for getting the job right the first time, for being reliable and the go-to person to resolve crises--that goes a long ways towards making a person feel appreciated.  And we all want to feel appreciated.

Giving recognition that can fulfill someone's work life costs nothing.

Level 10

Level 14

To fulfill yourself

Live life as it comes,

Live in the moment

Don’t settle for crumbs.

Know who you are

And from whence you came,

But stay focused ahead

And fuel the flame.

Chase your dreams

And seize the day,

Choose to be happy

Come what may.

Level 21

adatole ah, so now we know; you guys always sound awesome because you have an editor meanwhile we all get to sound like the babbling idiots with grammar and spelling issues!

Level 21

I think it's important to find work that is fulfilling; I absolutely love my job and hope that others are able to find that same level of happiness and fulfillment in their work.

Confucius say "Chose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life".

I am really fortunate.  At the end of most every day I see progress.  It is a very fulfilling work.

Level 11

Fulfilment is satisfaction in knowing that you have done what is required of you and from you.

What I do is only fulfilling when I am surrounded by people who love what they do. I've had a few contracts where people just want you to get on with it, no matter what the cost, and without any consideration. Sadly 'JFDI' work is not the most fulfilling.

So with the right people, with the right attitude, build a neat and tidy house that isn't made of cards.

Level 12

Fulfill your life with joy

Level 12

I myself am very heavily relying on Amazon this Christmas.

Last order in today.

Level 8

Level 9

Years ago I was gifted a copy of Material World a book by Peter Menzel. In turn I've gifted copies of it to others. The book is a photo essay of over 50 families built around a portrait of each family with all of their material possessions. There is no correlation between possessions and happiness (I'm sure no one is surprised by that) and level of fulfillment seems to trend with relationships between family members and the larger community. In my own life I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of a loving and supportive family. Only recently have I had any sense of fulfillment in my professional life, and while I know from personal experience that its possible to have a happy home life and work at a job that you don't like, I had to be sure not to take work home with me. I don't doubt that there are people who find all the fulfillment they need from work. The trick for me has always been balancing the two.

Level 13

"We live in a culture that relishes tearing others down. It's ultimately more fulfilling, though, to help people reach their goals. Instead of feeling jealous, remember: If God did it for them, He can do it for you." -- Joel Osteen

Level 12

This is one that can cover a lot of ground. I feel that i have goals I need to fulfill on a daily basis, as well as longterm life goals I need to fulfill. I also have the potential in myself that I need to fulfill, as well as the potential that others see in me that I do my best to fulfill. I just do my best every day to fulfill some goal or need or expectation while moving forward. Some days are harder then others.

I find myself refreshing the Word of the Day 2016 page waiting for adatole to fulfill the promise of day 21

Level 18

It's coming. Our guest writer is putting the finishing touches on it!

Uffda!  And I've been chomping at the bit, trying to post my entry there, since 7 a.m. Central Time.  I thought something was wrong with my search for "Day 21".

Level 14

Very good.  Can you feel the love?  I can.

Level 11

IT work is a grind to fulfill the needs, and often the desires, of those who own the networks on which we work. Our lives are usually struggles to fulfill our own potential, or at least our expectations of ourselves. For some, each day feels like we are slipping farther from fulfilling any of the above. It's more reason to keep plugging away.

I would like to see the love, but still nothing, and the daylight is dwindling....  Can we back post and still get credit?

I'd give you credit for it; I don't know if adatole will, especially if the Day 21: Love page doesn't come up soon.  I've been sitting on my entry nearly 8 hours (plus I built it back in November).

Leon:  Roberta Flack And Donny Hathaway - Where Is The Love - YouTube

Level 13

I am beyond my fulfill capacity to fix the mistakes of those less computer savvy than those of us who can mind-meld with a computer to speak with it.

That's good!  You won't risk being taken over, and end up proclaiming in a monotone voice:  "I AM NOMAD."

Fulfill and Potential. Two words that go hand in hand, and that haunted me during my childhood. I believe it is that is what contributed to me being an IT auditor so that I can feed on my anti-authority behavior.

Fulfill. Here is what I have to say about that. If you fulfill anything, make sure it's yours to own.

Level 8

Confucius say "man who represent himself has fool for client"

Level 12

I don't know how much it is, but there is a dollar value that I would append to any job that lets me go home with a sense of fulfillment.

Level 9

I don't always like what I do for a living but at the end of the day it is always fulfilling.

All these fulfill me.....

Level 11

My Uncle Gene has a great saying for this word:

"Be a job big or small, do it right or not at all!"

I have taken this to heart ever since I heard. I always try to do a thorough job and fulfill my work duties to the fullest!

Not having a fulfilling job is not a good thing.  I can always find at least bits and pieces of a job that I like, but I find it rare to find one that is wholly fulfilling.   The question is, how long are those bits and pieces enough?

Level 9

Make sure that everyday is fulfilling to you

I have to think fulfilling yourself is better than expecting others to do it for you.

Level 15

I personall never want to be 100% fulfilled.

Give me 80-90% and I will be happy and eager to chase that last little bit. Give me 100% and I will ultimately be left wanting.

Just the nature of my beast I guess.

Level 17

I would add here that it is more important to help others fulfill their potential than it is for you to achieve yours.

I like this. Fulfill your purpose in life, is how I see it.
