Day 15: Change

As people working in the IT industry, embracing change will likely be the best way for us to continue surviving and thriving in our environment.

How much change have we witnessed just in technology the last seventeen years? Do you remember when everyone was freaking out about Y2K on the eve of the year 2000? How far has the world of technology come since then? Though I was only 15 at the time, I can clearly remember so many massive technological breakthroughs there have been since… and they weren’t all coming from Steve Jobs, but various people.

The Internet of things today may be seen as a status quo now, but there is always a catalyst that brings us to a new mode of life, one that soon becomes an accepted standard. But how did we get here? You’ve got it… by accepting change (and most of the time, we don’t have a choice)!

If you were born in the 90s or before, you’ll likely remember when people simply communicated via a house phone, AIM chats, and what today would seem like rudimentary and antiquated forms of communication and information sharing. Nowadays, my 11-year old nephew in Spain knows how to do graphic design and has multiple accounts on various websites where he learns new things by the minute, and my other nephews and nieces have been using tablets since the age of 6 or earlier. And on the other end of the spectrum of age, my eighty year-old uncles and aunts in Spain and the U.S. (both sides of my family), are writing me messages on my Facebook wall to congratulate me on having recently established a wedding date and wedding location with my fiancée.

This specific process of change detailed above, and the technology revolution, which started way before the year 2000, is now becoming the standard. And at some point, we’ve all had to learn to accept this technology revolution, and grow with it.

You may be thinking to yourself, “Well it’s easy to accept this type of change if you’re one of those people who feels ‘naked’ when they accidentally leave their iPhone at home”. Well, on a personal note, I’m not one of those people that you find outside on a sunny day staring at their iPhone, smartphone, tablet or whatever. When I leave my home or the office, I enjoy being a silent observer that absorbs all that is going on around me, without a device. In fact, my Mom is driving me crazy on a monthly basis for the past year or two because I don’t want to download WhatsApp – I’m averse to this change! Trust me, I’m more for changing how people use technology then to continue the current state of obsession with technology. But no matter what, the constant here is that change benefits us all in the long-run in different ways, and we all adjust accordingly.

But what is it that brings about such revolutionary change? In a word: us. Because without change, we cease to evolve, we cease to progress. And yet, at times, change can be a way to retrogress, because as history has taught us, not all change is good. But even when change proves to be something that isn’t beneficial, it occurs only to be the catalyst for better change in the future.

Therefore, fellow IT pundits, aficionados, and business people alike, let’s embrace the changes in our industry that are yet to come in 2017, and let’s work together to make inevitable change positive.

Change is something every IT professional encounters daily. IT moves at such a fast pace, that new product you got may be outdated and need changed within a year. You must learn to CHANGE your abilities to stay at the top of your IT profession.

Change is inevitable as they say.  And if you or I are unwilling to change, we are in the wrong profession.

I work with a guy that has become somewhat of a punchline.  He really is never assigned anything or asked his opinion (which may have a lot to do with that time we were renegotiating our contract with HP and he raised his hand and said "You guys keep throwing around this word USB, what does that mean?")  The sad this is, they say he was the expert's expert on Novell.  But he never grew.

In some twenty years of IT, we have gone from ISDN to gigabyte pipes.  We have gone from Assembly to pick your poison (Java, .Net, C#, C+, etc).  We don't do things they way we used to do them.  Tools and languages allow for automation and design we never dreamed of before.  However, there are still websites that look like they were designed in the 90s in Microsoft Publisher. 

We have got to be willing to change.  It is the reason Google is growing and Black Berry is well..shriveled up and gone.

Change can be a good thing but also a bad thing once you get into a total route that you have a hard time changing.

  • I used to work for someone that thought any change was always for the better (it's not).
  • I currently work for someone that thinks that way as well  (it's still not).
  • Change happens.  Sniff the cheese constantly and be prepared to move/change/adapt in response to it (see "Who Moved My Cheese" by Spencer Johnson)
  • You usually can't solve today's problems with yesterday's answers.  The new problems aren't always amenable to the old solutions, and at the very least they will probably have to be adapted and may require new solutions to be invented.
  • Last and most important: If you want things to change, you must change.

I can think of plenty of times where people become very selective on what they are ok with changing.

I always remind myself that if I'm fearful of changing something then (sometimes) I should probably proceed so that I can grow.

I think change starts with having the right mindset for that change. You can talk about change all day long but what are you truly changing. Ive seen people change the way they do things or the way they communicate but when you investigate further you find they are still doing the same things with the same outcome. They are just arriving at it a different way.

Change is something everyone is scared of. Some are just better at accepting change then others. Some prepare for it better then others. Some resist it entirely to their last dying breath. Humans are creatures of comfort, and being familiar is comfortable. It you change something it is no longer familiar and no longer comfortable for you. In my younger years I accepted change a lot easier then I do now. Lately I have been afraid of change and what the changes may or may not bring for me. But being in IT we need to be able to always adapt to change. Our industry, more then any other, never stays the same. IT thrives on change, and it dies when it doesn't.


I was married to a woman that always wanted things to be different, but never wanted to do anything different. This isn't really a cartoon, but a commentary. So true.


I work in an environment of dramatic and quick change - healthcare. The dynamics get complicated as we also have a lot of people that are set in their ways and don't want anything to change. It gets difficult treading the waters between those that embrace technology and move forward and those that still like paper.

I read an article recently that described an Information Technology Security Brain Drain.  It is being caused by employers that do not send the InfoSec people at least twice a year to training or conventions. 

Without constant training and interaction with peers across industries, your InfoSec team would be defending todays threats using last years knowledge. 

Change is happening whether you adapt to it or not.  Do not be left behind.

Look at what your vendors are doing to keep up.  If they cannot keep up, leave them behind.

I participated in a SAP webinar last week on Mindfulness: "Your Key to Thriving in the Digital Age." I saw an interesting graphic. For the first time in history there are 4 generations in the workplace. Talk about constant change!

I've been in IT for 20+ years now. That's a pretty long time now. Every year along the way I have read an article stating that, "...IT is Changing Now More So Than Ever..." It's cliché! The technology has always been adaptive so I figured I should be as well. I stopped trying t be an expert in anything and learned to know technology just enough to be adept. That allowed me to keep up with all the moving, and changing, parts. Change is constant.

Something else I learned. Take everything on your résumé that refers to anything prior to 2000 and delete it. Nobody cares.

I always looked at my grandparents with amazement, they went from horse drawn carriages to men walking on the moon. I'm beginning to think that my life will end up seeing changes just as dramatic. I'm old enough to remember Betamax and when microwaves were the new thing. I'm hoping to live long enough to see people living on Mars.

One thing I can't stand is the mentality, "Well that's the way it's always been done."

That mentality cuts down growth.  Thus, change is necessary for growth.  I love change when its my idea, but am averse to it when it's not my idea. Something I'm working on!

Adapting to change is probably one of the most important skills to have.  If you're stuck on wanting things to be the way they were a decade ago, everything is going to pass you by.

I remember when I left the ISP world and entered the corporate world, so much new stuff to learn and I soaked it up and as a result advanced quickly through the ranks.  A co-worker, who was pretty set in his ways, hated all the change I brought, even when it made his life easier.   At that point in time he was working with 3700 series Cisco routers with external T1 CSU/DSU's and a tangled web of cables due to the massive growth through consolidation of our datacenters.   Our boss wanted a solution that made for quicker expansion, less of a mess and faster speeds.   I proposed moving to some higher end routers with channelized T3's and reduced our footprint in the datacenter to a fraction of what it was.   For quite some time he didn't want anything to do with it until he grudgingly realized it wasn't that much different and it was far easier to deal with.

There are those that adapt to, and propose changes, and those that get dragged along kicking and screaming!!  🙂

Change will happen one way or another. You can choose to change with it and adapt to it, or not...

the change will still happen.

If you do decide to change something, try your best at it!

How many times can I look back and think "If only I had seen that change coming sooner..."


I don't know that we will ever be great at predicting change, but I do know that in our industry, we live and die by our ability to roll with changes. I also think that we tend to have a selfish attitude that says "I love change! (-ing other people)"

It's a fine line to wander, but at least we all wander together, and THAT will never change (until it does?)

The best way I've found to adapt to change is to learn. To not only learn how to use the changed technology or method, but why it came about. When you understand the reasoning, you understand a lot more about the people, the technology or process itself, and the future of how that aspect of life will continue to change. You may also become the implementer of change, if it is within your power to make it better in its next iteration.

The way it's always been done probably works... but it may still have room for further improvement. Changing that just because you dislike that it's always been done that way is no help. However, if you can in fact find a better process, by all means try it and use it if it does indeed prove to be better.

...but I totally understand the mindset of people being locked into their ways. "Well that's the way it's always been done" is often another way of saying "I'm too lazy to relearn how to do it." Sometimes relearning (and encountering the inevitable errors to be made until the kinks are ironed out) is more trouble than it's worth. Sometimes it's not.

There is nothing permanent except change.

When I saw the word for today my first thought was of Azure, and cloud in general. There was so much FUD being spread around about cloud. Much of it was done by people who made a living off of traditional IT systems. Cloud represented a loss of business to them, so they spent time shouting it down every chance they could.

Since then I see the same response, from the same people, for anything new. They no longer spread fear about cloud. Now they spread fear about data science, or whatever else may threaten them in some way.

But there are a handful of us that see such change as opportunity.

Looking at, dealing with and the handling of change seems to be something that people are generally programmed with or they aren't.  I've worked with so many people throughout my career that were in one camp or another.  There doesn't seem to be much of a middle ground.  I've also learned that it's generally not something you can train or coach to.  It really does feel programmatic similar to things such as desire, will and self motivation.  Some people have it, some don't.  What I've also noticed is that there is a connection between those that embrace it and those and the speed at which they progress in their careers vs. those that struggle to embrace or accept it.   Two very different paths.

There is little worse than change just for the sake of change.  Change can be good!  Change can be bad too!  Make sure you think through and test your changes, I'm looking at you networking *AND* you systems admins *AND* you developers....funny thing about having been in Ops, I get to blame all of you when changes go wrong and I know exactly whos fault it is.  So make your changes for the right reasons and test them frequently.

God can restore what is broken and change it into something amazing, all you need is faith

However the generality of the people detest change

You often hear things like, don't rock the boat... if it is not broken don't fix it.
