**Please see SolarWinds Certified Professional program changes for 2019 for program updates.**
The SolarWinds Academy is excited to announce the official launch of the new and completely updated SolarWinds Certified Professional® program.
Based on the feedback from SCPs around the world, we focused on two key aspects of the program that needed attention: creating lasting value for SCPs and helping SCPs succeed.
We want to create lasting value.
We created the SCP program in 2009 because we knew our customers wanted to demonstrate that they have the skills needed to manage networks effectively using SolarWinds products. Unfortunately, as time passed, the program did not grow with our products. The SolarWinds certification became outdated, and did not hold enough value to be a competitive player on the global IT stage.
To create lasting value, we made two key changes:
We want IT professionals to feel pride and a sense of achievement at becoming an SCP.
We want our customers to succeed.
Our customers’ success drives everything we do. Because the world of IT is always growing and changing, continuing education is an integral part of being a successful IT pro. To encourage continued growth, we added several benefits that members can use to increase their knowledge.
New benefits include:
Single exam option
Your certification is active as long as you are a subscription** member and attend required events/training
Same benefits as year one, plus:
*Only includes exams that are part of the new SCP program.
**Your subscription does not auto-renew

Cal, could you expand on this statement?
"For SCPs working for SolarWinds customers under active maintenance, you will be recognized as an SCP member within the support system and provided with an enhanced support experience"
Any details you can share?
Hey bobmarley not to put words in anyone's mouth but from what I've understood talking with SolarWinds this will mean that your name will be flagged in the system, so when your user account logs a ticket in the customer portal it will be given a slight elevation in priority. It hasn't been confirmed when this will go live or the specific details around it yet, but I would assume that it will simply be a tag that tells 1st line you are someone who knows what you're talking about and they don't have to get out the ID 10-T Form.
So, it sounds like this would create a "Basic" versus "Premium" support experience. I'm very comfortable with most of the products in the Orion suite and well versed in the SolarWinds Support process and what's required. However, since I'm not paying the $200/year SCP/Premium support option on top of the amount my employer is already paying for maintenance I only get the "Basic" support experience and have to wait with the rest of the SolarWinds "commoners"?
This would be really troubling. Even before I was aware of the cost of the new SCP and it was announced there would be a "enhanced support experience", I thought that this sounded like a bad idea.
David Smith is correct. As an SCP certification holder, our Support team can assume that you have completed all basic troubleshooting steps and reports. This saves you time by skipping the fundamentals and diving right in to your issue or faster escalation if needed.
Will be interesting to see if SCP escalation team is actual support. Anything I have needed help with lately support has actually made the issue worse.. which is kind of par for the course.
I don't think that it will be an enhanced support experience in that sense, as SolarWinds already offers a Premium support package with an associated cost, so it wouldn't make sense for them to offer that to anyone paying the SCP Subscription, I think it just means that your trouble tickets will potentially skip some of the basic check-list steps that a standard ticket might experience like calling the user to ask, have you run the config wizard etc etc. However as I am paying that additional yearly cost, then there needs to be something to help make that money worthwhile to both me and any prospective employee in the same way that some accreditations have a bonus of some level such as reduced list sale price (Cisco) for example.
And as for the tickets, to be honest, if you're experienced with the system and the support process, then you already know some of the best methods of accelerating a support ticket - ensuring that all the relevant information and detail is provided in the original ticket and that you can prove you have already gone as far as possible on your own. That way support knows where to take over.
Like I said, don't take my word as gospel I don't work for SolarWinds and have no actual confirmation of how this will work, this is all just my own opinion/understanding.
It's Saturday, cold & snowing so what else is there to do on a day off so I sat the SCP for SAM exam this morning. Whooo Hooo - I passed. They said that I'll get a confirmation mail in 48 hours, but I'm already on cloud 9. Whoo Hoo again
Not good enough for me. I may be one voice, but Solarwinds as an organisation appears to be heading in completely the wrong direction. If what I've learned this week about the change to how partners can offer discounts is true, everything about this new direction is just a cash grab. Quite happy to let my SCP expire, it doesn't earn me anything so that's fine. But I won't defend Solarwinds when the prices on support go up. Not a chance.
I'm sorry, but I still feel like pricing is completely ridiculous for both options.
Having a SCP doesn't translate to a real word value and at the end of the day it's just not marketable. Having it on my resume doesn't give me the edge over the competition for a job and it sure as heck doesn't increase my salery.
I understand having it makes Solarwinds a better project, it improves Solarwinds the company and that it makes me a better System Admin, I just don't know if that's worth the price of admission.
A step in the right direction still has some value...Application certifications may not have that value you would get in any of the more major areas such as Cisco certs, but there is nothing wrong with trying to develop some credibility to any skill
Having a price on it allows them to start giving it some validity, and I agree with that approach.
Now when it comes to support and creativity and quality work, I am hopeful that internally things are good enough to provide some longevity to the company. This application has a well informed, smart, and involved user base that is more than happy to assist with their products to make them better support and more well designed. I think that is a good starting point for the company as whole to recognize and take advantage of. Offering suggestions for what and how they imrprove the products and support is just as important as telling them a customer is unhappy about something. It all needs to come out, the good the bad and the ugly
I agree, while the option to use THWACK points is a nice gesture I think my concerns from the original (now locked ) thread stand. SolarWinds Certified Professional Launch
I agree. I don't think SolarWinds products are as ubiquitous as other vendors that have vendor-specific certifications like Cisco and Microsoft. Therefore the advantage to hold this certification when you're not already employed by a company that uses SolarWinds products is low.
I would also like to chime in on the "these benefits should be included in maintenance" camp. My company is already paying for maintenance to allow us to receive support and training from SolarWinds on their products.
Now I have to convince management to pay for me to attain a SolarWinds specific certification and pay a yearly subscription to gain access to "online training", "invitations to live events", "study hours with SolarWinds experts", and to be "provided an enhanced support experience"
When they say "Wait, aren't we already paying maintenance for those same things?", how do I answer that question?
Any input on that cal.smith?
I would argue that depending on your job role and your company field then it would have some very specific market value. Yes, it isn't as generic as something like Cisco CCNA, but then what do you get back from Cisco once you have passed the exams? The SCP will give you access to continued learning as well as support from SolarWinds in tuning both your own knowledge as well as your current system.
And at the end of the day, if you don't feel it adds any current market value for your job role - don't take it. If you don't need it then why worry!
