EOL Lookup offers you a one-stop EOL info shop

Level 14

Hi everyone,

I am very excited to share the launch of our EOL Lookup space in thwack. Here at SolarWinds, we are always looking at ways to give back to our current community and to the broader IT community at large. One of the concerns we've heard is that EOL information is often found in numerous different locations, and certainly spread between vendors. For those of you in heterogeneous environments, this often means cruising to multiple vendor websites to hunt down this information. It gets even worse if you're Googling the devices one at a time...

Why bother with EOL dates?

  • Keep abreast of information on device support from vendor
  • Plan well in advance for network expansion and growth
  • Be better informed and equipped for device replacement
  • Track network device inventory for effective Network Change and Configuration Management

These are the goals we'd like to achieve and the pain we'd like to alleviate.

Currently, we've located and provided end-of-life information about Cisco and Juniper network and security devices in the space. But, this isn't just a date next to a router, switch, load balancer, WAP, or security device.

Sure, we provide the end of life announcement, the last shipment date, the last date of support, and the last date of hardware or software support, but we offer you even more:

  • Find the link to the actual EOL announcement and news
  • Search using either the spotlight search on the top right -- this searches a broad selection of titles, model, vendors, et cetera
  • Or, search using the page's widget -- letting you select a vendor, product line and then pinpoint a device by exact model name
  • Need to find the space and don't remember the thwack URL? No issues, check out eollookup.com.

We are not done.

We are going to add more vendors.

We are going to expand our coverage and our vendor range (of course).

We will update the space monthly, at a minimum, providing you relevant information in a timely manner.

Come check it out. And don't forget to signup for our space updates (top right).

Huge thanks to numerous people in getting this new resource launched. Please join me in thanking , , , and everyone else that touched this launch.

See you on the boards,

Michael

I really like the offering but the space really needs some work. As is, I won't spend much time here.  I can find the info faster going directly to Cisco's EOS/EOL page here.

Search EOL Lookup doesn't work.  On numerous attempts, the Choose Vendor dropdown doesn't show anything. Finally, after switching back and forth using IE8 and Chrome (v22) browsers I was able to get Cisco and Juniper to appear.  I selected Cisco and then the Product Type dropdown appeared. Again, nothing listed after numerous attempts. Finally gave up after 5 full minutes of clicking.

Also, under RECENT CISCO EOL CONTENT and RECENT JUNIPER EOL CONTENT sections, clicking More just results in 'Loading...".  No additional posts are presented. My preference would be to scroll down through the list of posts rather than click and get X more entries at a time.

I think each post takes up too much real estate in each vendor section.  I would like to see or be able to specify how many entries to display at a time instead of only viewing 5 at a time.  My preference would be to set increments to 100, perhaps even an ALL option.

Doesn't seem like too much quality control went into this space.

Sorry for the bad review!  Hope it gets better in the short term.

Hi rgward,

we ALWAYS want the feedback, (and in my case even more so when we have a ways to go yet).  We're getting ready to do some NCM usability on jobs and we'd love to take some time to work with you on this request to figure out how to make this actually USEFUL for you . If you might be interested in a discussion on EOS/EOL coupled with scheduled jobs, email me directly at kellie.mecham@solarwinds.com and we can find a time to talk.  As always, feedback of any sort is good feedback!

As Kellie said, we are always interested in feedback--all feedback is welcome and appreciated. I've direct messaged you about this, as I'm having trouble reproducing the flaws you're seeing. We will fix get this right. Thanks for your patience.

I think what would really be sweet is to have Orion periodically check a database of EoL/EoS items, compare it to what's being monitored in a given customer's environment, and have a report showing relevant items (and maybe pop an info message at the top of the page as well). This could be similar to the way you handle upcoming maintenance expiration dates and the "available product updates" thingy. I know it could be difficult to line up model numbers, given that some models share the same OID, but it's a thought.

I agree with vhcato, it would be very helpfull to kind of work like SCOM 2012.  Searches environment and recommend best practice or suggestions (same as suggesting the available upgrades for products)
