thwack Monthly Mission - October 2014

Community Manager

For this month's mission you're going to need to tap into your crossword solving skills, No Ifs, Ands, or Buttsets about it! Surely most of you remember the days of the buttset (bonus points to who can tell me where that name was derived from).  Buttsets are used primarily to identify issues after the fact but in true SolarWinds fashion, we offer a proactive solution that will help keep your end user complaints to a minimum.  This month we’re introducing SolarWinds VoIP & Network Quality Manager (VNQM). VNQM gives users insight into critical VoIP and WAN quality metrics for both Cisco and Avaya infrastructures like Call Detail Records (CDR’s), MOS, Jitter, Latency, Packet Loss and WAN performance metrics that affect real time communication applications like VoIP between remote sites.  There's a lot to cover and learn this month, so without further ado, let's get this mission started!

October's Mission

Correctly answer all 5 questions during a given week throughout October and you'll be entered to win a Jambox.  If you can make it through all 20 questions by October 31st, you'll be entered to win a LEGO Mindstorms NXT!  Make sure to carefully read through the mission rules below and download the printable crossword from the bottom of this blog and fill out your answers as you move along.  We will reveal the answers once the mission has closed.

Mission Rules

  1. One question will open everyday starting October 6th.  Once a questions opens, it will remain open until October 31st.  Check the schedule below for exact open/close times.
  2. 150 points are being awarded for each correctly answered questions.  There are 20 questions which means you can earn up to 3,000 points for this mission.
    1. Points and badges will be applied to profiles once the mission has closed.
  3. You must correctly answer the daily question to move on and enter your thwack username and receive credit.  If you guess wrong, the page will simply refresh.
    1. You are allowed to guess an unlimited amount of times for each question, but you will only move on to the next clue once the correct word has been entered.  We've tried to accommodate several variations of each answer so capitalization and other minor details should not be a problem.  Please contact me if you feel you have the right answer but are having trouble moving forward.
  4. Those who successfully complete all 5 questions within a given week will be entered to win a Jambox! Drawings for the Jamboxes will be held on the follow Monday
  5. Those who successfully complete all 20 questions over the course of the month will be entered to win a LEGO Mindstorms NXT! Grand prize drawing will be held on November 3rd.

Anyone else a problem entering the Day 2 answer? It's coming up with a red asterisk like i didn't enter anything. I know the answer is right, it's right out of the PDF hint.

It worked for me in IE with all caps, spaces between...

wbrown
Level 13

The all caps just worked for me.  Probably the only combo of capitalization I didn't try previously.

Same here.  Got it to work in IE in all CAPS and no dash's.

Hello people !

I just made the crossword into a XLSX file, easier to fill than a JPEG or a printed version (never seem to have a pen nearby when I need one)...

Hint numbers are in the cell comments.

I'm open to criticism

(bonus points to who can tell me where that name was derived from)

There are 2 different opinions about the origin of buttset.  One opinion is that it gives the lineman the ability to "butt in" to any conversation.  The other opinion relates to where it hangs on the linemans tool belt.

I don't know how serious you were about the bonus points DanielleH but I figured I'd toss it out there.

Interesting that b-u-t-t didn't make it past the filter.

syldra
Level 12

Thought it was short for "Buttinski Set" after the inventor

Seriously, french speaking techs call them "buttins" too, but I'm pretty sure most thinks they're actually called "bottines", which litterally translate to "ankle boots or booties", as "buttin" and "bottine" are pronounced the same.

Day 3 didn't take any of my answers, so I came back here to read comments. When I go back into Day 3 now it says I've already completed it... ?

ttl - Can you try again now?  There should be nothing funky with today's question.  It will accept all lowercase, caps, etc.

We have several hundred successful responses on Day 3.  I've also looked at some of the guesses that haven't made it through and it's because it's not the right answer.  Keep guessing, you'll get it!

cahunt
Level 17

many synonyms that did not take for day 3... but if you keep trying you run out of words and get to at least 1 needed.

* Also noting that previous days are still opening up and allowing answers after already being answered.

First time participating, so I apologize for a seemingly obvious question. When do the points get assigned to your account? I answered all five correctly, however my point balance does not reflect the same. Just wanted to make sure credit is actually being applied.

Well, I slacked off and missed contention for the first week jambox. But I answered them all now and I'm caught up for the grand prize!

I feel like I know not much about VoIP irl, but I swam right through the answers through day six!
