Too bad these Traxx cars aren't Porsches - I just sold my 1980 Weissach edition 911 over the weekend and I miss her already.

Level 20

at GT2 or GT3 might be nice!

I did not know what that Porsche that was so I looked it up.  Looks like a real beauty.

1980 Porsche 911SC Weissach Edition | Mecum Kissimmee 2015 | T248

I have had seller regret many times over the years for a 1958 Fender Twin Amp with original Jenson Blue Frame speakers I sold back in 2004 on eBay.  The only mod it had was the GZ34 rectifier and its socket was replaced with a different tube and pin layout.

I rescued it from a garage sale in the late 1980's.  Its cord was cut off thank goodness.  It needed some assistance because its cloth wiring had separated and an old ham radio operator told me to mix up a varnish/thinner solution and separate and paint each wire in place.  That and a new power cord and it was playing again.

Going back on the Porsche line for the 911 leads you to the mid 60's 356c.

My grandfather had one...

Level 14

All the questions this month should have the obligatory "Survey Says????" in them....

One Hundred Thwackers survey top four answers on the board.... Name you favorite Solarwinds Product?

Now if the wonderful Thwack crew can tie a bell or buzzer into the responses when you submit your answer...of course it needs to sound remotely on the persons pc, mac, or whatever...

wow neat prizes this month, my 7 year old son would love a new car..

I liked the way Richard Dawson said "Survey . . . SAYS!"

Back at you!!

Level 11

Anyone got any idea how long the points take to get awarded after the missions close? I never had a reason to pay attention before, but now that I am pretty sure I'll finally be able to get the backpack, I'm just wondering if anyone has a rough idea how long it takes them to be awarded so I can stop maniacally refreshing the page

MVP
MVP

usually about a week give or take depending on how busy the Thwack admins are.

maria.bungau is usually feverishly working on that from the time the mission closes as I understand it is not an automated process yet.

Level 11

Sounds good to me. Not trying to rush poor maria.bungau or anything- I just wondered when to start looking at my account numbers

I am trying to earn enough points for a backpack as well. Not sure that the points I earned for April have been added   because my points haven't changed since mid April.

Another great topic!

Just a thought on the prizes this month anyway we can get these loaded out with pellet chain guns and paint Hellfire missiles? Sometimes IT needs to go on the offensive.

Level 11

Wow! An ITIL question. I didn't even need to open the reference for that one!

MVP
MVP

it is possible...virtually.

Now with some of the larger ones, they can carry a 5lb payload but then you are getting up into the $2500+ quadcopters like the inspire.

Not sure what the phantom 3 and 4 can carry....but you can get a flir camera for them...it blows the doors off of what the police department helicopter with flir can see.

We're gearing up to run a phantom 4 or inspire with such for nighttime fire department operations and search&rescue incidents.

I attended an outdoor fair where there was a larger quadcopter carrying a digital camera overhead, apparently videoing the crowds.

Sadly, the operator brought it in front of the bleachers where many people were enjoying and outdoor presentation.  Its motion and noise were very distracting, and caused some of us thinking about Big Brother and person privacy and surveillance without our permission.  I suppose many of us may be on some future promotional video for the fair's upcoming shows.

To put this in terms of a popular comedian's point of view, "Sure, you can DO it.  You can also drive a car with your toes--but that doesn't mean it's a good idea."

The irritation factor of this quad and its video camera affected us due to its noise interfering with the enjoyment of the performance, and also with the question of "Who is operating this device, and what are they going to do with the video it's collecting?"

I'm all for safety for police and fire fighters and military people, and if quads with video can save lives and property and catch bad guys, I say "go for it!".  But in this particular venue (it was an outdoor fire arms fair) I saw people who were not comfortable being photographed without permission or foreknowledge.  Even if the camera were disabled, folks in the crowd have no way of knowing it.

Perhaps worse, the operator of the drone launched it from the ground behind the stands.  When it began experiencing technical difficulties (perhaps batteries were low?), it made a bee line straight for its point of launching, with no regard to the people standing between it and that piece of ground.  Happily, no one was injured when it set itself down, but the quad propellers are an intimidating source of potential injury.

MVP
MVP

Depending on the model of the quad, the larger models transmit telemetry on battery status, location, altitude, gps location, etc. and such back to the operator.

Most are designed to "return home" when battery reaches a certain point of discharge.  Some of the smaller ones just "drop" where they are at.

I know the phantoms will return home at a specific altitude before they descend.

Regarding the video recording...if it is a public venue and anyone can run a video camera then it is fair game.  The use of the quad may be regulated by the property owner or city ordinance.

Now on that point, if operating the vehicle poses a risk, then there are issues at hand.  Many people who have them for fun and they are not much more than toys and treated as such.

We are working with an individual who has set up a training program to use these in the fire service.  He is also a consultant with DJI.  It is a rather intensive 2-3 month program with written and skills tests beginning with the small quads like the syma 5c (cheap but good for the basics of flight and control).  Then they move to an inspire ($2500 aircraft) for further training including two person operation with one flying and the other running the fully gimbaled camera.

There are those who fly quads professionally for videography to create footage for promotional videos, documentation, movies, etc.  They have a higher standard to adhere to and have to log all their hours as a normal pilot/aircraft with potential oversight by the FAA.  Then there are the amateurs who are mostly just that..amateurs.  There are some responsible amateurs out there too, most of the issues seem to be from those who are not and those are the ones that end up on the news.

Level 20

Or your little drone can come face to face with THIS!  The DroneDefender!!!!

battelle-dronedefender4-777-777x437.jpg

bye bye drone!

MVP
MVP

yeah...

Better be careful which drone you point that at.

If it happens to be one in use by the fire department around here then it could be considered  comparable to pointing a gun at a fire truck or it's crew.

A nearby FD had one shot at which changed the game since it was being flown in an official capacity on the fireground.

Lots of folks at this gun show likely thought the drone would make satisfactory target practice for their skills.

However, the device above brings concerns, too.  I expect there'll be legislation about it, just as there's always action and reaction to anything that impacts our daily lives--particularly when it involves anything that could fall under " . . . the pursuit of happiness . . ."

What a mess folks open up when they don't follow Mr. Rogers' philosophies, right?

Level 20

Geesh that's kinda scary!

MVP
MVP

yes...it changed policy such that everytime it flies the camera is on and recording.

Next time the person gets arrested and charged for assault on a public safety person I believe is what I was told.

It was taken rather seriously.

Level 20

The good news is I don't think Battelle sells the dronedefender to anyone but military and maybe some law enforcement.
