UPDATE: The community will go into read-only mode at or around 7:00pm CT. At 12:00am CT, the site will be taken down into maintenance mode for at least 16 hours. I will update you all accordingly. Stay tuned!

Service Maintenance Notification

Summary: THWACK is migrating platforms from Jive to Khoros (Lithium) on February 20, 2020.

Severity: Intermediate

Description: We will be migrating community platforms from our existing, hosted environment on Jive to our new SaaS provider, Khoros (Lithium). Our estimated maintenance window is 16 hours.

Service(s) and Users Impacted: thwack.solarwinds.com will be unavailable until all systems are verified back up and running.

Start Time:
Thursday, February 20, 2020, 12:00:00 AM CT

End Time:  Thursday, February 20, 2020, 4:00:00 PM CT

Maintenance Manager: Danielle Gaitan; mailto:danielle.gaitan@solarwinds.com

As mentioned in my post last month, the time has come for THWACK’s platform migration. On Thursday, February 20, 2020, thwack.solarwinds.com will be unavailable for approximately 16 hours. At midnight, the site will be taken into maintenance mode and will not be accessible until all critical systems are verified back up and running. Why are we migrating? Read more HERE.

There will be a few items that may not be fully functional when we are live again. Here is a reminder of what you need to be aware of.

  • LOGGING IN – You will need to reset your password when you attempt to login for the first time. Passwords will not be carried over.
  • SAVE YOUR DRAFTED CONTENT – All content published before 12:00am CT on February 20, 2020 will be migrated. Drafted/unpublished content will not be migrated – save your work!
  • POINT BALANCES – As promised, your lifetime and current balance points will be carried over to the new platform. The script to migrate your point balances is estimated to take a minimum of 18 hours and will likely commence after the site is live again. If you do not see your full point balances when you first log in, don’t fret! Please give us until Monday, February 24 when another status update will be issued to the community.
  • LEVEL/RANKING/LEADERBOARDS – Good news! The team pushed hard on this one and we’ve confirmed that while your level and your position on the leaderboard will change, not everyone will start from scratch as I originally detailed. However, it remains true that the data is not apples to apples, so you should expect changes. There are 3 ways to “rank up” on the new platform. yumdarling will outline this in more detail in the coming days.
    • LEVEL – This is the number that appears next to your avatar. Today, your level is determined by the number of points you have. On the new platform, your level is determined by an accumulation of activities on the forum boards. Your activities are being ported over with your profile, but it is likely your level will change based on the new level perimeters.
    • LEADERBOARD RANK – Today, your position on the leaderboard is also determined by the number of points you have. On the new platform, your leaderboard position is determined by the number of “kudos” or likes your content has earned. As such, your kudos are being ported over to the new platform, but you should expect your position on the leaderboard should to change from where you’re at today.
    • POINTS – Finally, THWACK points. You will continue to earn points on the new platform, but your point balance no longer determined your position on the leaderboard nor your level. The store (and some new items!) will be available on the new platform for which you can purchase with your points.

And with that… see you all on the other side!

First, it's so good to be writing to the community again. I've been hibernating working on fun necessary projects. But before I share what's coming, I have a question: how many of you knew THWACK was born more than 16, almost 17 years ago? I've been at SolarWinds for 8-plus years solely working on the community and our user group program and I have to say, it's been a thrilling, inspiring, and eye-opening experience to witness what THWACK has become today.

But with age come changes. The external community vendor arena has grown sparse due to shifts in how businesses are engaging with customers, and few have been successful in building a community program to do what all of you have built here on THWACK. That said, here’s how we arrived where we are now:

  • July 2017, Jive (our current platform) sells to Aurea.
  • September 2017, Aurea breaks up the business and sells Jive-X (Jive external) to Lithium.
  • Following this, we went through a lengthy RFP process and ultimately signed with Khoros (aka Lithium), who hosts external communities for Cisco, HP, Microsoft, Spotify, and more.
  • December 2018 it was announced Lithium will EOL Jive-X at the end of 2020.

TL;DR we’re migrating platforms! We saw this coming and work has been underway to bring things to parity between the platforms.

GOING FROM HOSTED TO SaaS

Because I know this audience understands these annoying yet necessary circumstances, I'm going to geek out with you a bit.

Our current environment (Jive) is hosted. We were told for years we'd never be able to move to the cloud due to the number of customizations we house. Thankfully, our forever and always partner, sonofagum, came through with a plan.

All our customizations (the THWACK Store, Monthly Missions, SolarWinds Lab live chat, etc.) were previously written in Java and ran in-process in Jive, taking advantage of a rich set of available services and libraries. The new platform mandated all our non-trivial customizations run out-of-process and be hosted externally. This presented us with a lot of challenges: from authentication, to platform differences and migration incompatibilities, to scalability, to having to rewrite dependencies from scratch without the benefit of source code, all while learning the ins and outs of the new platform. Needless to say, we’ve been busy over here!

EVERYTHING has been rewritten in C# (.NetCore 3.0 on Linux) and Angular or Vue and now runs in AWS. There’s still a lot of work to do and everything may not be perfect on day one, but we’re committed to keeping THWACK the best user community on the interwebs.

WHEN?

The official migration date is February 20, 2020. That's right, 02.20.2020 or 20.02.2020 for most of the world. I don't know how that worked out, but I'm calling it next-gen binary. We'll have more updates in the weeks coming, but below is what you can expect.

WHAT’S CHANGING?

  • Khoros is a mobile-first platform, which is great for you and really, really painful for us. We’ve had to rethink our entire webpage structure—headers, navigation, body content, widgets, footers, etc. But it’s really helped us clean up some of the website real estate and we’ll be curious to see if mobile usage picks up. Currently <1% of you visit the website on devices smaller than an iPad or similar.

  • Forums are now called categories and each category houses multiple boards underneath it. Confused yet? Don’t read too much into the semantics, but I wanted to bring this up and share an example to help understand what this change means.
    • Current THWACK: Network Performance Monitor is a forum housing multiple types of content – discussions, documents, feature requests, etc.
    • Future THWACK: Network Performance Monitor is now a category and has three main boards underneath it (hierarchically speaking).
      • Network Performance Monitor – shows all content contained in the sub-boards but content cannot be posted here.
        • Network Performance Monitor Discussions – houses all NPM discussions.
        • Network Performance Monitor Documents – houses all NPM documents.
        • Network Performance Monitor Feature Requests – houses all NPM feature requests.
      • This means you’ll need to either follow the NPM category page or all the sub-boards depending on your preferences. Not a big deal, but something to note.

  • Polls and events are no more. I know what you’re thinking. Trust me, I grilled Khoros hard on this. Not too much to say here other than we’ll have backups of this content, but it won’t appear on the new platform. We may revisit later to assess what can be done.

  • Remember when I mentioned we’d never be able to move to the cloud due to the number of customizations we have? This is where things get real. Our entire gamification strategy is unique to SolarWinds. We invented something even experts in the industry have never seen done at the level we’ve taken it to, and successfully I might add. The Khoros gamification strategy is fundamentally different than what we’ve developed. Their ranking system is based purely on community activity and engagement whereas our current ranking system is determined by your point accumulation. Sure, we’re logging community activity and engagement, but it’s not apples to apples.
    • Before you start penning hate letters, your points are being carried over and the store will live on. I won’t go into detail as to how we made this happen, but we did. Going forward, you’ll continue to earn points, but there will be more defined ways upon which you can earn them. More to come on this later.
    • However, everyone’s level will start at 1 (Ready Player One anyone?). There’s simply no way to port the way your current level is determined to match how your level will be determined moving forward. The data is too different. It's like trying to direct connect a 300baud modem to an MPLS line. It's like trying to port your TRS80 Basic program to the cloud as a microservice. It's like trying to convert your "database" that was lovingly crafted from macros in Lotus 1-2-3 to SQL 2016. It's like trying to make Battlestar Galactica jokes to a bunch of overly-earnest LOTR fans. It's like... well, it's like trying to port a gamification system built from custom scripts and calculations into a completely different platform.

  • Oh, and you’ll need to reset your password the first time you log in on the new platform because security or something important like that.

ACTIONS YOU NEED TO TAKE

Prior to our migration date, February 20, 2020, you will need to take note on the following items:

  • You will need to take inventory of the places and people you follow as well as your bookmarks. These cannot be migrated with your profile details.
    • Steps to find the places you follow: navigate to your profile > click on “More” > click on “Places.”
    • Steps to find the people you follow is the same as above except you’ll choose “Connections”: navigate to your profile > click on “More” > click on “Connections.”
    • Steps to find your bookmarkers is the same as above except you’ll choose “Bookmarks”: navigate to your profile > click on “More” > click on “Bookmarks.”

  • You will need to save a local copy of any content currently in draft mode.
    • If you have any drafted content that won’t be published before February 20, save it off THWACK! Drafts cannot be migrated.

Once the migration is complete, we’ll publish instructions on how to get the items above set up on the new platform. I would recommend to follow the following people to ensure you get the latest or if you need to shoot us any questions: yumdarling, KMSigma, sonofagum, and me DanielleH.

I’m exhausted. The team is exhausted. Did we want to spend the last 12 months working on this (while continuing our regular jobs I might add)? Absolutely not, but this is technology and it’s a constant game of keeping up. Writing all of this on paper knowing I’ve purposely left out 90% of what we've done makes me so proud to call these folks my team. I hear this audience knows a thing or two about migrations... I’m hoping you’ll bear with us through this transition and understand not everything will be perfect, but rest assured we'll be working around the clock to make it right. The backbone of this community—you—is all we need.

Oh—and #darktheme is coming.

What's a SWUG?  The short answer is it's an extension of this online community, delivering over 14 hours  of technical, hands-on education for free.  We started this program in 2015 and in 2020, we're back and—literally—bigger  than ever with two full days in cities across the globe. SWUG connects you with  SolarWinds executives, product managers, user experience researchers, technical  advisors, engineers, Head Geeks,  and other end users like you. It's a great place to get the answers to the hard  questions perplexing you, get details from behind the curtain at SolarWinds,  take a pulse to see what other industry professionals are doing, and where  they're going. Our goal is to help you be the best IT pro you can be. But don't  take our word for it. Here's what attendees at recent SWUGs have to say:

As a first-time attendee, I have to say this was my favorite work event I was able to attend this year. As mentioned, it was an event actually dedicated to us, for us.

— Paige Barnes (medleyp812), Chicago SWUG 2019 Attendee

I've been to events like this before only to be bombarded with what I can purchase from either the host or their partners. I got the feeling that the employees representing SolarWinds genuinely care about their customers.

— Ashley Warren (abby.warren), Chicago SWUG 2019 attendee

This was my first SWUG. I found value in the information provided as well as the personal contacts made during the conference. I will definitely plan on attending next year and I also look forward to THWACKcamp.

— Jim Yocum (jpyocum), New York SWUG 2019 attendee

Fantastic conference. Instead of sitting there listening to a marketing presentation like many conferences, the attendees were able to engage SolarWinds employees and address concerns and speak to their own environments.

— Steven Dean (chezbrgrs), Atlanta SWUG 2019 attendee

As my first SWUG, this was an excellent event. I felt overall it was very informative, and really highlighted the amazing user community around the SolarWinds products.

— Benjamin White (bwhite23) Seattle SWUG 2019 attendee

Join us and more than a hundred other IT pros ranging from monitoring engineers, help desk techs, MSPs, DevOps to the "I do it all"-folks in building bridges and tearing down silos. Remember, the goal is to get the information you need so when your workweek’s done, you can enjoy your weekends.  If you would like to be notified as soon as registration is available, please complete the pre-registration form for the SWUG(s) of your choice below. Thanks to everyone for their contribution, but the submissions are now closed.

It’s no surprise SolarWinds loves hearing from all of you in the community, but there’s never enough time to speak with everyone. As much as I like typing to everybody, I like seeing your bright, shining faces even more. I’ve met many of you in person at events or SWUG, but I’d like to know more of you and hear your SolarWinds story.

So, here’s what we propose: record a short video (technical guidelines below) of how your journey has been with SolarWinds.

Things to include:

  1. State your name, your title, and what year you started using SolarWinds; e.g. “My name is Kevin Sparenberg, I’m a Technical Content Manager, and I started using SolarWinds in 2008.”
  2. How did you start working with SolarWinds solutions?
  3. How have you used the products in your job?
  4. How has SolarWinds helped your career?
  5. BONUS: You have 10 seconds – what does SolarWinds mean to you?

Since I was a customer for so many years, I’ll share my story first:

Video Link : 1355

As you can see, this isn’t a SolarWinds Lab-level production. I just took this video with my laptop using my webcam. This is exactly what we’re looking for: you, your story, and your journey. We don’t want or need fancy studios, visual effects, or gimmicks to hear from the community. I was unshaven, without make-up, and just sitting at a desk with natural light. What do the kids say nowadays? Oh yeah: #NoFilter.

That’s it. That’s our request. Your video could be as short as 45 seconds but should be no more than five minutes. Whatever time it takes for you to tell your SolarWinds story is just fine. If you’re new, give us your impressions; if you’re an old hat, then tell us more about your journey.

Rewards:

  • For taking the time to do this for us, all participants with completed submissions will receive 3,000 THWACK points you can use in the store.
  • The first 50 submissions will also receive an exclusive SolarWinds 20 hoodie. [Terms and Conditions: US, UK, CA | DE | AU | HK, SG]
  • Then, a panel of judges will pick a single submission and that contributor will receive a cold-aisle data center survival pack including the SolarWinds 20 hoodie, a thermal insulated mug, and an emergency blanket. [Terms and Conditions: US, UK, CA | DE | AU | HK, SG]

How We’ll Use the Videos:

Like I said earlier, we love seeing and hearing from our customers. As SolarWinds reaches another milestone this year – marking 20 years in business – we want to make sure everyone gets a chance to contribute. We want your help in marking this milestone. Our Video Team will expertly craft the submissions into videos to be used as part of our celebration. I’m anxious to see everyone’s submissions.

Best Practices for Recording Video:

  • Be sure your camera lens is clean.
  • Record quality should be 1080 or higher.
  • Set your camera on something for a stable recording.
  • You’re the star, so frame your shot. Make sure you’re front and center.
  • Avoid busy backgrounds or too much clutter.
  • If using your camera on your phone, use the back camera. It’s generally better quality than your forward-facing camera. Enlist someone to help if necessary.
  • Try to avoid shadows, so be mindful of light sources. Don’t have a bright window behind you—face the window instead. Avoid sitting directly under or in front of downward facing light.
  • Find a quiet room for audio purposes. Avoid rooms with lots of echo. Not too big, not too small. Try to find the “Goldilocks room.”
  • Please, no logos displayed on clothing or in the background. Move that can of cola out off camera. This is about you, not product placement. Of course, SolarWinds logos are fine!
  • Be aware of other people. Make sure no one is in your video who didn’t agree to be in a recording. If you have a coworker who wants to be a part of this, encourage them to submit their own.
  • Look right into the camera to provide your answers. Watching a video where people look off camera is distracting.
Don't Do These Things... Video Link : 1359

IMPORTANT - Upload Process:

  • Preferred video file formats are MP4, MOV, MKV, or WMV.
  • Name the video file with your THWACK handle. For example, my video filename was “KMSigma.mp4.”
  • Either:
  • Upload the signed release with your video.  This allows us to use your video.  Use a matching file name (like "KMSigma.pdf").
    • Failure to upload a completed, signed release will disqualify your submission.
  • The submission process will close at 11:59 PM Central Time on Sunday, September 22, 2019.  Any submissions after that time cannot be accepted.

Submissions Closed

FADE IN:

EXT. HIGHWAY - DAY

KEVIN is driving a open-top convertible with his sunglasses on, the sun on his face.  The car is moving down an empty highway and KEVIN is speaking directly to the camera.

KEVIN
(excitedly)
Hey – I’m Kevin M. Sparenberg and we’re browsing about looking for the THWACK community’s best tricks and tips on this inaugural episode of THWACK Tuesday Tips!

KEVIN drives the car out of frame.

  FADE OUT

But in all seriousness, everyone’s time is precious.  It’s the one commodity that will never be replenished.  Our goal with this series is to offer very short tutorials on the SolarWinds products.

You might ask yourself why we are doing something like this.  After all, SolarWinds has the SolarWinds Lab each month, the SolarWinds Academy with weekly classes, the SolarWinds Success Center with knowledge base articles, and THWACKcamp each year. Do we really need to have something else? To that, I say “yes.”

The thought process looked something like this: The quicker you can watch the video, quicker you get the information you need, the quicker you get the job done, the quicker you get to go home.

So, join me as with kick off with the first episode of Triple-T.  It’ll be so money.

I am pleased to share that the THWACK store is back in business! We greatly appreciate your patience while we worked through a huge vendor transition over the past two months. We are working closely with folks who ordered items near the store close date to ensure that your items are sent out ASAP. If you placed an order and have yet to receive it, please email your order # to thwackstore@solarwinds.com.

You should notice little to no changes on your end with regard to the ordering process. However, you should see improved order accuracy, timelier updates on order status, and FREE BUTTONS* with every order! *All orders placed after August 30, 2019 will ship with fresh-off-the-press buttons (the buttons are not yet off the presses, but will be making their way to you soon).

We are working on bringing in a few new items to the store and would like your input: Which store item should we add next?

Happy shopping!

I’ve heard a rumor you’re an IT professional. Okay, maybe it’s less a rumor than a well-established fact. You’re on THWACK, after all.

I’d never considered myself an IT pro until now. Even after a decade in the tech industry, the title didn’t feel like it fit. It wasn’t until a conversation last week with KMSigma about the difficulties of markup languages on our weekly digest email template that I had the epiphany—gosh dang it, I AM one of you nerds!

The timing of the realization ended up being perfect. This coming Friday, I drop the chains of corporate America and leave SolarWinds so I can focus on some personal projects.

Before I go, there are some departing thoughts I want to share with you. They’re lessons learned from ten years of “not” being an IT professional, three of which I was #blessed to spend with you and this incredible THWACK community.

One thing I’ve learned in IT, aside from “more than I ever wanted to know about HIPAA and GDPR,” is that we can consider ourselves kings, but the end user is ultimately the queen. Debates about sexism aside (we all know the queen is in charge), think about this.

In chess, the king is a great piece of wired hardware. It does the job, is pivotal to the whole operation, and nothing is going to work without it. But it’s not moving very far. Sounds like you, right? Me too.

The queen has far greater reach than the king but opens up a whole slew of problems when you start to move her about the board. Invading forces are limited in the ways they can get to the king if the queen is right there by his side. But if the queen decides to take a business trip to, let’s say, a conference in Las Vegas and starts to use the dirty public Wi-Fi… you get the picture.

However, if nobody builds your organization’s products, sells them, and supports the products sold, what’s left to create demand for we, the IT-people?

I’m not dissimilar from you. Instead of my end users being solely an internal team, I have to make sure I support what you need and want. And instead of infrastructure, my chess board is THWACK. It’s while I focus on you as a user that all other KPIs melt away. User engagement goes up. Community sentiment and satisfaction increases. The sales team on the third floor cuts back on Red Bull consumption.

It’s when we don’t focus on the end user that all things go to [redacted by our Content Review team].

When we follow the status quo, resist change, follow the path of least resistance, blindly adhere to that nagging boss (not calling DanielleH out), their nagging boss (not calling TiffanyNels out), and other internal pressure to make decisions contrary to the success of our end users and customers, we lose our grip on success. Our KPIs become the only thing we care about, and somehow, they still manage to collapse.

This is the moment I think about one of the happiest people I’ve ever met, Larry. I affectionately called him “Larr Bear.” Larry was a senior help desk analyst here and could be found roaming the halls at least once a day to mingle, chat, inquire, troubleshoot, and check back with his constituents. Did it take time away from his goals? Yes. But was he happier, and did he effectively change the way our helpdesk team functioned on a fundamental level? Absolutely.

There’s a story I’ve heard from time to time about a woman who took her child to see Mahatma Gandhi.

“Mahatma,” she said, “I don’t know what to do and I’ve come to seek your advice. My son won’t stop eating candy. The sugar turns him into a monster. He’ll cheat, he’ll lie, and he’ll steal to get more candy. It’s ruining our family, it’s ruining our relationships, and it’s ruining our reputation.”

Gandhi looked at the boy for a moment, then turned to the mother. “I see,” he said, pausing again to choose his words. Gandhi continued, “As much as I would like to help, there’s something I need to do first. Take your son home, wait two weeks, then come back to see me.”

The mother wasn’t sure why Gandhi gave her this advice, but she trusted he knew what he was doing. She took her boy home and continued to struggle with the child and his candy addiction. When two weeks has passed, she knew she would have to return to Gandhi and ask for help once again.

Gandhi recognized her immediately, walked over to the boy, got down on one knee, peered directly into his eyes, and said sternly, “Don’t eat sweets.” He then got up and turned to walk away.

“Mahatma,” the mother stammered, “this is a very serious situation, but you sent me home for two weeks just to have us come back so you could tell him to stop eating sweets?”

Gandhi looked back and paused for a moment. “I did. But two weeks ago, I was still eating sweets.”

Before they make me turn in my badge and laptop, and days before I send my final passive aggressive email correcting “THWACK” to be all-caps, let me leave you with this.

Be the change you want to have in your organization, set the tone for the morale you want to have around you, and don’t forget the reason we’re all here—our users. Everything else will fall into place.

Signed lovingly,

Community Manager

On the heels of the SolarWinds Service Desk announcement, we thought it was only appropriate to formally introduce a new member to the THWACK® team who is joining us from the recent Samanage acquisition: yumdarling!

Yum’s new role is focused primarily on Community Management of both the THWACK and ITSM communities. If you haven’t already, you’ll start seeing her name pop up all over the boards, but until then, here’s some getting-to-know-you facts about her.

I can’t say I’ve ever come across the name Yum before. Is there a story behind it?

Yes! My name means "beach" in Hebrew. I was born in Israel. When my parents moved us abroad (the first time), they had to decide how to spell my name in English. The options were Yum and Yam. Yam would have made more sense to Hebrew speakers, but thank goodness my parents both knew a little bit about English and knew that Yum would be closer to the correct sound. (Yam... could you imagine?). The name Darling... well, I married into that one.

How did you get into community management?

Well... I was always the "forum mom" even before I knew what community management was. I went to college for something completely different (ask me about bioarchaeology and forensic anthropology). I got a job out of college doing marketing for a small IT MSP, and then found out that people are actually doing community management for work! My whole life changed in an instant (or, like a year-ish) where I was in charge of a small community of IT business owners. The rest is history (or it will be one day, when I'm famous).

Can you tell us a little bit about why you love your job as a community manager?

The best thing about life is connection. The best thing about working is making a difference in someone else's day. Community lets me do both! I can meet and talk to a bunch of people and make a difference in their day (hopefully an awesome difference).

I’ve heard you speak in several tongues. How many languages do you know and actively practice?

I love languages! Hebrew, English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Arabic are my best languages. I'm actively learning Chinese, Japanese, and ASL. I've got a couple more that I can have get by with if I have to (and understand what people are saying if they feel the need to talk about me) and I've attempted to learn French. Maybe I'll go back to it one day, who knows?

What are you most excited about joining and supporting the THWACK community?

I have to pick one thing?! I love how active this community is. There is so much going on at all times and so many people to chat with... I can't wait!

What are some hobbies you enjoy?

Oh man, so many. I love reading and writing, driving down long winding roads, cooking and baking for my friends, and watching movies with my family. (In the last week, my 2.5-year-old son and I have watched “Frozen” approximately 12 times.)

Speaking of reading – what are you reading now?

Overdeliver by Brian Kurtz, and I’m rereading the fourth Harry Potter book (Goblet of Fire) on the side.

Are you a dog, cat, or neither person?

Both! I have a dog and four cats at home and I used to run an animal rescue.

Life highlight from the past 30 days?

Other than "became THWACK's community manager?" I fed a giraffe and watched it eat my mom's glasses.

Have a question for Yum? Or just want to shed light on this “little” community thing we’ve been doing on THWACK to get her up to speed? Comment below!

We’re bringing deeper visibility and smarter scalability to your network with new features and solutions you need to see at Cisco Live! 2019.

Join us at booth #1621 to learn how SolarWinds continues to improve our hybrid IT management solution built on the Orion® Platform.  SolarWinds is recognized as a worldwide leader in network management software by industry analyst firm International Data Corporation (IDC).

COME LEARN ABOUT

Network Insight features:

Today’s networks are more complex, with more advanced hardware. Simply knowing if a device is up or down doesn’t tell you how your load balancer is managing application delivery or if your firewall is blocking the right traffic. Network Insight features are designed to provide the right information for each device's unique role in the network. See how Network Insight features for Cisco Nexus®, Cisco ASA®, and F5® BIG-IP® help you troubleshoot your switches, firewalls, and load balancers like an expert.

Cisco ACI support:

Figure out when a problem is occurring in your SDN environment directly from your primary monitoring tool. Monitor the logical components of your SDN environment, including APICs, tenants, application profiles, endpoint groups, and physical entities.

Intelligent Maps:

You need to understand the relationships between devices and applications on your network, but don’t have time to maintain maps. Orion Maps are for people who love beautiful maps, but hate to maintain them. Get back to managing your network, not your network monitoring.

PerfStack:

Correlating different data types from across the IT stack can be time-consuming and difficult. Use PerfStack dashboards to drag-and-drop network, systems, virtualization, database, or storage metrics to a common timeline.

Stop by our booth to see demos of our full suite of powerful, affordable, and easy-to-use IT management software solutions.  In addition to our core IT products, you can learn more about MSP and cloud-native products as well.

Let me tell you a story about plumbing.

As a young homeowner, I was house-rich and cash-poor, and because of that I needed to handle breakdowns myself as much as possible. I learned to do electrical work, cabling, drywall, basic carpentry, and plumbing. Of them all, I found the greatest satisfaction with plumbing work. Sweating copper pipes together was elegant, utilitarian, and beautiful. Not all joints were the same, so there were challenges to overcome each time, but a clean weld and a solid seal was a mark of satisfaction. There were a handful of tools that took care of most of my problems; a few pipe wrenches, a hacksaw, a pipe cutter, flux, a blowtorch, a bucket, and a mess of couplers were enough to tackle a majority of my issues. The bucket was multi-use. It could be used for when there was a leak, or as a receptacle for my tears when things went badly.

Then things changed. I’m not a tradesman, so I can’t say exactly why this change happened, but the next time I needed to do work, there was a new infrastructure that was taking over. The aisles that were outfitted with row upon row of shiny copper pipe were being replaced with bland white tubes and flexible colored bundles. My jobs didn’t change; I still needed to get water from one place to another without a bucket, but my materials were different.

Like all skills I’ve picked up, I needed to start learning new approaches. Since the objective didn’t change, but the approach and the materials have, there was a learning curve but with the same goal in mind.  A  new infrastructure and implementation philosophy had its own nuances. Flux was out, to be replaced with inline couplers or chemical cements. Cutting was relegated to special slicing tools. Supporting new plumbing codes, using new techniques that shortened the time it took to accomplish a task. Everything about it changed, except the goal—getting water from one place to another, getting it there quickly and at the right temperature (a temperature requirement that is always changing). Thankfully, the bucket stayed the same.

You may ask yourself, how is moving from copper to CPVC or PEX anything at all like working in IT? Well, although the infrastructure may have changed, your job has remained the same: to provide services to your end user regardless of where their services reside. You could be working with a team that is containerizing everything or a team that’s shifted everything to a cloud platform, but none of that matters. Making sure that the end users can do their job is your job.

Where and how the user does their work is immaterial. Realistically, it doesn’t matter where the work is done, be that on a bunch of physical servers, within a plethora of virtual servers, in a private cloud, hybrid cloud, public cloud, or within a SaaS solution. In that light we’ve added the Cloud Management forums to THWACK. It’s the work that’s valuable to your organization and why you have a job. The tool and the approach that was right last year may not be the same for the next year. This is why SolarWinds® AppOptics, Loggly®, Papertrail, and Pingdom® share the spotlight with products like Network Performance Monitor and Server & Application Manager. You can easily take what you know, combine it with your years of experience, and apply them to this new emerging IT environment, armed with tools that are purpose-built for the new plumbing.

New approaches, tools, and skills never, ever replace your existing skillset; they just supplement it. That’s what makes for great IT professionals.  There are times when I’ve had to go back and sweat copper while helping a friend or replacing an old water softener. Your legacy skills and tools are just as viable, but you need to know when and how to use them.

So, don’t be afraid to think about picking up some new tools and taking a different approach to solve problems that are ultimately the same as before—helping your users do their jobs—on some new infrastructure. The skills you picked up in your past are valuable, useful, and reduce the learning curve when challenged with something totally new.  Your skills, those which help you work through problems from a multitude of angles, are the ones needed with any new infrastructure.

But if there’s one thing I can recommend, it would be to not forget the bucket.

SolarWinds had a great 2018: We launched seven new products and over 12 product updates to our Orion® Platform, DevOps, Security and Compliance, and MSP portfolios. These releases have had an overwhelming amount of support from our user community, which continues to be the foundation of our product strategy. We couldn’t have done it without YOU, our customers, and THWACK® community members.

Most recently, we asked our customers to review us on the Gartner Peer Insights platform for Application Performance Monitoring Suites, an expanding SolarWinds portfolio supporting both cloud-native and on-premises application monitoring. Let’s begin with a personal invitation to each and everyone one of you to join us in 2019 for one of our SolarWinds User Groups (SWUG). This year, we’re traveling to Atlanta, Seattle, New York, and Chicago. For 2019, like years past, it’s all about building bridges, tearing down walls, expanding communications, and fostering the best community in IT. The 2019 SWUGs will feature two days of sessions, including keynotes from SolarWinds executives, Head Geeks, and others, open spaces for attendee-led meetings, community-requested sessions, multiple topic-centric tracks, interactive sessions, and much, much more.

You may ask yourself why SolarWinds has made these changes. Well, it’s largely in result to our previous attendees’ feedback. You asked for more technical deep-dive sessions, more interactive sessions, more how-to sessions, and more interaction with the attendees in the room – and we heard you. If you’re taking time out of your busy schedule to be a part of an event, then it’s our job to make this event as informative and educational as possible.

If you’ve attended a SWUG in the past, you know that we have always packed the day with content, but it just wasn’t enough. Therefore, we’ve gone to two days. We also realize that not every session resonates with every person. With that in mind, we’re relying on you, the community, to tell us more about the sessions you want. You get to direct our track-based content. Our concentration is to make the sessions and content more diverse and community-driven.

Why Attend a SWUG?

The short answer is that it’s over 16 hours of educational content provided by SolarWinds professionals for free. That’s what you see on paper, but what you get by attending this in-person event is so much more. What we’re offering in a SWUG is opportunity: opportunity to speak with SolarWinds staff about the software, opportunity to interact with other IT professionals in your area of expertise, opportunity to influence the future direction of solutions in your environment, and opportunity to customize your experience and the content to your needs.

The thing that I’ve enjoyed the most about being part of the SWUG journey over the last few years is meeting the community. Although I’ve been with SolarWinds for a few years now, I haven’t forgotten my roots—as part of the community of users who utilized SolarWinds solutions to do my job better. My favorite interaction was always someone who brought up their manager or their co-worker and, together, we helped show them how we could help fix that one problem that’s been a pain point for some time. The power of SWUG is in a room full of other professionals to answer your questions. Although each environment is different, many of the problems we encounter have some level of commonality. At a SWUG, you are surrounded by hundreds of people whose role is like yours—in essence, a community.

The Evolution of SWUG

The super power of the THWACK® community is – and always has been – the diversity of its members. That diversity, coupled with everyone’s different IT specialties, makes for an engaging and, frequently, entertaining place to spend your time. In 2015, we began with an experiment: what would happen if we brought some THWACK members and some SolarWinds staff into a room and got them to interact with each other in real life? It seemed like a success. Like all scientists, we expanded on our hypothesis and tested it again.

This little experiment became the SolarWinds User Group, or SWUG. In 2016, we traveled to nine locations around these United States doing the same experiment. For a period of a half a day, we got everyone together and spoke with them about monitoring things better with SolarWinds. And what’s the purpose of having excellent monitoring? Finding the root cause quickly, helping you diagnose issues rapidly, which is key to giving you your weekends back.

SWUG_Dallas.jpg

Taking our cue from the scientific method, we took our results, analyzed what we found, and determined the next steps for our experimentation. In 2017, we moved from half-days to full days and extended the reach—both in scope and in locations. We traveled all over the world, meeting people who ranged in title from monitoring professionals, to network engineers, to systems administrators, to security professionals, and more. Building relationships among the community has been my favorite part of being with SolarWinds. Meeting more people and hearing your stories has been a highlight of my career.

In 2018, we scaled up once again and visited eleven cities around the world, hosting SWUGs to get to know the community better. One thing that we realized in our whirlwind tour over the last four years was that high technology people actually like talking to other high technology people. The THWACK community is more than just an online community, it is a community in the truest sense—made up of individuals, each with their own experiences, skills, and knowledge.

SWUG_London01.jpgSWUG_London02.jpg

In previous years, we’ve heard that we weren’t talking enough about this or we skipped that other thing entirely. Much of that was because we didn’t have the time. The next logical step was to get more of the community together and tailor the content to your requests.

It’s now 2019, and it’s time to take the results of the last four years, refine our hypothesis, and test it again. This year, we will be moving to two days of content with more people, more sessions, more interaction, and more—basically—everything.

SWUG 2019 by the numbers:

  • 0 conference badges required
  • 4 cities
  • 2 days
  • 3 tracks per day
  • 16+ hours of community-driven, educational content
  • 100+ IT professionals
  • and you

Register now to join me and other SolarWinds professionals in a city near you for a great 2019.

Houses United for the Holidays

Winter is here. IT is your watch and monitoring is your great battle. Threats live beyond the firewall. End users are out there and…hold up. Actually, we’re thinking you just skip all the toils, anguish, and revenge, and get straight to ruling your environment with a unified solution.

Arm yourself for a storm of slowdowns, an ambush of alerts, or even a dance with downtime—but let’s not drag this out for another season, shall we? Wield the power of an integrated solution this winter and use your alliances to help with improved performance across your networks, systems, and applications.

Start the mission, triumph, and make this your crowning achievement.
