[UPDATED] 2020 Bracket Battle Preview

Level 12

[Updated April 20] 2020 Bracket Battle: Reviver Edition is LIVE! Click here for the rules of engagement or go directly to the battle here

The Date is set. The Matchups made.

We are just a few days away from the introduction of the 2020 BRACKET BATTLE, and quite frankly, we could not be more excited.

Despite the number of creative, and relevant, guesses. No one has been able to quite rouse the topic. So, I am going to give you all another chance at redemption and up the ante to 1000 THWACK points…

That is right! 1000 THWACK points to the person willing to ponder the possibilities and venture one more guess.

I will give you a few hints to get the ideas turning again…

  • It has nothing to do with COVID-19, or WFH. While the masterminds behind these battles are good, the brackets are months in the making. We couldn’t have flipped it that fast.
  • The theme has been a topic of discussion for all time, found in folklore, great literature, Penny Dreadfuls and graphic novels.
  • Often pined for, often warned against.

We launch this year’s bracket on Monday, April 20. What say you? What is this year’s BRACKET BATTLE?

Level 12

Wishes, as in be careful what you wish for? Genies? Magic?

Level 14

Music artists. Pick four genres.  The best of each genre will meet in the final four.

ITSM skill supremacy.

There seems to be a lot on ITSM and the new service platform, it has to have something related to it.

Evil-doers, or horror characters.  Which one is the worst, or most powerful, of them all.  Or even the reverse--which is the "worst" villain--meaning "Vote for the villain who is least competent at being evil."

Scary folks/creatures in general.  May not even be restricted to being criminal (depending on the context).    The winner could be someone from a Marvel Avengers universe, or someone from historical fiction from centuries past, as in the  "long list of supernatural creatures, based on a 1584 book, the Discovery of Witchcraft. Here’s an excerpt: “… nixies, Jinny-burnt-tails, dudmen, hell-hounds, dopple-gangers, boggleboes, bogies, redmen, portunes, grants, hobbits …”" (from https://www.dictionary.com/e/hobbit-tolkien/).

One might be voting to choose between Loki and a golem, Dr. Horrible (sorry, Neil Patrick Harris) and Doctor Octopus (from Spiderman fame).  Maybe even someone who is working both sides of the line--doing good, but being scary (while doing bad to the bad-guys) like The Shadow (did any of you know the '70's band took their name from "The Shadow's" real name:  Lamont Cranston?).

I'm thinking we'll be comparing characters like Thanos, Green Goblin, Dr. Doom, Magneto, to each other.  Or, maybe to real characters from history?  Would Genghis Khan be able to compete against the likes of Red Skull or Purple Man?  How about against villains from the Dr. Who universe like the Daleks or the Cybermen?  What about villains like Professor Moriarity from Sherlock Holmes fame--is he allowed to be part of the competition?

I hope these are the ones, because I think they'd be fun to vote for & learn about.

Level 12

I was thinking along the same lines as @rschroeder some type fantasy hero to a real hero.  But not Marvel or DC was thinking in Star Wars realm with the Mandalorian.

My two cents.

About the Author
I am not a native of the Geek Kingdom, but I have been granted permanent legal resident status.  I find your culture intriguing and seek to study it closely so that I might help the rest of the world better understand your needs, motivations, and strange rituals. Somewhere in 1997, I discovered that I possess a pretty decent ability to take complex, technical "mumbo-jumbo" and explain it to anybody's grandmother.  Thus, a career was born.  And now, I run SolarWinds' corporate marketing and PR programs.  (So, if you are ever struck with a sudden and pressing need to declare your undying love of SolarWinds to a Network World reporter, feel free to call me.  I can make that dream happen.) I married a geek and am pretty sure that our two boys are already displaying the tell-tale signs of geek.  And while I have been known to kid about those with a professed love of technology...  it has changed my life for the better.  And no, Spock is not a superhero.
