Tell Us How You Manage Cyber Monday Insanity & Get 250 THWACK Points!

Level 15

The ghosts and ghouls of Halloween are behind us, and the beginning of November means that Thanksgiving is fast approaching. As the leaves continue to change and the holiday season ramps up, shopping is at the top of everyone’s to-do list. And what better way to take advantage of the holiday sales than from the comfort of your own home on Cyber Monday?

The rise in online activity stemming from these sales, however, will certainly create costly bottlenecks and downtime, and an increased need for optimized application performance. How can we best handle and manage this increase in demand and activity to provide end users with the best holiday shopping experience?

We want to hear your post-Thanksgiving advice for peers and colleagues managing the Cyber Monday madness. Help us all prepare this year by sharing your best practices for application performance management and maintaining uptime by Thursday, November 16, and we’ll give you 250 THWACK points in exchange.

Chill, relax, put our feet up on our desk's and watch our network guys sweat. We are only responsible for internal employee facing systems. Teams around us are responsible for the rest. So how does my team handle the insanity, easy....we don't !!! hahahahahaha.

Level 10

Honestly, it hasn't been a huge problem. It's only partially my responsibility, but our Internet is so locked down that most of our users actually just use their phones' data to do things like shopping.  Many of them think we have nothing better to do than to watch their Internet usage reports, anyway. We just don't argue with them.

Level 9

We all take off and go shopping!!!!

Level 8

Basically we sit back and drink coffee, joys of a closed network.

Level 8

I'm a DoD contractor, so there isn't really an impact other than there not being anyone around. We have a storage room for hardware, cables, UPS, etc. Throughout the year it turns into a trash pile, looks like a datacenter threw up into a room. I usually try to convince someone else to go do a big organization and clean up in the storage room rather than just sit at the desk feeling like you'd rather be home and time is dragging on in a painful purgatory like state.

Level 7

Business as usual for us. Our guest network gets hit a little harder but its designed for high density.

Level 8

Although where i work does not have any "products" to sell to the general public.  I think its important to make use of the increases awareness that this Monday brings to online shopping.  Cyber Monday is a cultural phenomenon you should jump into whether you sell online or not. It might be easy to dismiss if you are not the likes of Amazon or Walmart, but the largest e-commerce shopping day of the year can be leveraged for any brand, big or small. This is a chance to connect with your customers in a different kind of way.

Level 7

Pretty much normal day, other than requests for guest wifi password.

Level 7

Pretty much a normal day for us.  If anything slightly higher bandwidth usage but fewer support requests.

Level 7

Our biggest lessons learned is to not make any changes to the systems before then!

Level 9

Cyber Monday does not impact our company.

Level 9

Cyber Monday is a bit of a change but Tis' the season to be online shopping.

Level 9

Cyber Monday has not been a problem, but March Madness with all the streaming traffic is a different story.

Level 9

Cyber Monday historically has not been an issue for us in the insurance business. All just nice and steady away.

Level 8

bourbon....lots of bourbon

Level 7

If we had dramatic changes to our network within the past three months, they are vetted again in a test environment and the density and load are increased to previous years markers.   Once that is done, appropriate changes are made two weeks prior and if needed adjust  for an influx of about 15% across the board.  Three days prior we are only in reaction mode, all maintenance  and service request are put on hold and we wait out the storm.

Level 8

Make a list of possible scenarios and hope one of those happens .

If not then hope it does not happen on my shift .

Although new challenges are cool as well XD

Level 20

Try and get it done quick and don't dwell on the web all day.

Level 8

Change blackout is an important piece around the holidays.

Level 9

It isn't a huge problem for us - our biggest issue is people online shopping... we added a spash page to our FW for sites that are in the "shopping" container... "this is a shopping site...are you shopping as part of your job"..

Level 7

Sit back and wait for all of this to blow over

Level 7

Business as usual, our Internet is locked down so most of our users actually just use their phones

Level 13

Not in retail thankfully, so rather than worry about the problem I do my best to contribute to the problem.

Level 8

Well I will be most likely be working from home as they require me to take holidays off! HA! we all know how that works when you are a 24/7 facility!

Level 13

all shopping websites are blocked save for a few individuals that need to access sites for their jobs...

easy peasey

Level 16

When I came to work today - Black Friday - I had no problem finding a parking spot. I think I'm one of about 15 people in the building. Don't think we are going to have any issues with bandwidth. Unless there is some kind of human stampede and the ER fills up its business as normal.

Level 7

I usually will take it easy and keep to the schedule as its any other day but account for elevations in activity.

Level 9

Fortunately, the increase in bandwidth that we experienced was minimal.  Most of the people in my office took off both Friday and Monday....can i tell you, it was like a second Thanksgiving as we were expecting severe issues with bandwidth.....

Level 8

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Level 7

we just keep our eyes more on an escalated concerns for cyberhacking and make sure we do not see anything out of ordinary.

Level 9

We hit the EPO button and hope for the best!

Level 9

Slept In

Level 7

We just make sure to keep a rela close look on everything and make sure we are ready for any changes in behavior and prepared to act.

Level 7
