THWACK Monthly Mission - September 2019

Community Manager

Each application performance monitoring (APM) product is its own powerhouse—a force to be reckoned with. With all the products combined—Pingdom®, AppOptics, Loggly®, and Papertrail— though, unimaginable strength of the APM suite can be unleashed. And in the right hands, that power can be used for ultimate good.

Go on a mission to find and collect the all-powerful APM suite stones. Once you have them all, you’ll have the power to protect yourself and your organization, not to mention the world, from application disasters with unified visibility into systems performance and laser focused troubleshooting through metrics, traces, logs, and the user experience.

AppManagers, UNITE!

Use the mission’s resources to complete the tasks and answer the questions for a chance to win!

Correctly answer each question during the week and you'll be entered for a chance to win the weekly prize.

Correctly answer all 20 questions over the course of the month and you'll be entered for a chance to win the grand prize.

150 points are being awarded for each correctly answered question. There are 20 questions, which means you can earn a maximum of 3,000 points for this mission.

Level 10

Maybe a hint next week will ask us to look at the source code of a few pages. Yesterday would've been a good day for it as it was national talk like a pirate day.

"Dig deep into the code, arrr… Find the answer buried under five layers of <Strong> tags. There be the answer ye seek."

I'm a big fan of "Digi-Nose :^)"; been using and reading them since the 90s.  They work because they are compact bytes [SIC] of information that are easily digestible in the modern world.  There's a little blurb put out by "WIRED" magazine called "Tech In Two", which is the same concept.

To play a little opposite advocate here, the opportunity for learning comes from the DYKs themselves.:  I read through all four of them, and even though I'm not a web programmer or use a website for business, I did get some nuggets about the four systems mentioned in the DYKs that I can tuck away for future reference.  That and you can "Learn/Read More" and take that deep dive if you want so I appreciate that aspect of these Noses.

Having said that, I do have to agree with Smitty: the question is worded incorrectly and, consequently, all answers are wrong.  I was able to use a little deduction to get the right answer, however.

It appears there is a new DYK for the pingdom and it now needs to look at the second DYK unless I totally messed this up.

it was added 9/16/19 likely after the mission was written.

I fixed it so it's pointing to the right word... not sure if it's simple, but it's correct

Level 12

I should have looked here before I answered, nothing matched up so I picked 'you have got to be kidding me' or whatever that answer was...

Take the first, second, and third words from my response to today's question:

"Never again, please."

Mostly joking! I wanted to go with what jokerfest chose!

Level 11

Can someone define "Finally, take the fifth "s" word of the first Pingdom DYK" as:

  1. A word that begins with "S"
  2. A word containing "S"

I don't find a possible fit.

If it is a word contain "S", then these are the choices:

(1) just (2) released (3) version (4) Version (5) security simplified requires username password request Easy-to-read based specification queries just minutes

If it is words that begin with "S" there are not 5 "S" words in the first DYK of Pingdom:

(1) security (2) simplified (3) specification

For the life of me I don't understand my Solarwinds wants me to drink my Ovaltine..... but ok.

Image result for be sure to drink your ovaltine

Level 10

What happened to the bonus mission?

I tried to follow my bookmark to it and get a "Not Found: The item does not exist.  It may have been deleted" message.

Level 10

Nevermind, I found it.  Did you change the address?

Level 13

I tend to overthink things sometimes.

Today was not one of them. I didn't even read the hint before answering what seemed to be the obvious answer. Not sad that I did it that way.

Level 13

AAARRRGGHH!! I missed me chance to talk like a Pirate!

Which one is the "2nd paragraph" - #2 or #3? (Technically the block of bullet points is the 2nd one in the "RUM section".

Screen Shot 2019-09-23 at 8.26.45 AM.png

... and not seeing the answer to the question in either paragraph - just me?

Level 9

#2 is a list that belongs to the 1st Paragraph, so #3 is the second one. The answer is in there Keep looking.

You should be getting points - are you not seeing them?

Level 8

404 page not found on the hint link for me this morning.

This works though Papertrail - cloud-hosted log management, live in seconds

Level 7

I can't find it. What URL are you using?

Level 9

Got the same error - thanks for the link!

Level 9

Getting the same thing

Community Manager
Community Manager

Thanks for letting me know, I fixed the URL

Level 7

So once you answer a question wrong there's no incentive to continue.

Level 9

Points means prizes though!

Level 10

You still get points which get you free stuff from the shop. and there is always next week.

Level 13

You could use getting a question wrong as a justification to leave work early and go blow off some steam.

Level 9

I didn't have much luck with today's hint - but a swift bit of googling (after a lengthy coffee break mind), turned up this link  - whilst it doesn't spell out the answer with a ctrl+f-able bit of text, it does show a screen about halfway down that might be helpful under "trace details".

Level 11

Thanks for the link, I am glad I checked first!

Your link however is appended with a '//http', so confused for a second ><

But removing it took me exactly where you went Many thanks!

Level 14

Cheers for the link.  Top banana.

Level 11

This might also help...

Level 9

Thanks, that was a copy/paste (or coffee input) fail on my part!  Fixed 😃

This should help AppOptics to Loggly

Level 8
Level 12

Thank you both!

Today's link doesn't work. It should be set to Page Speed Monitoring | Pingdom

Q15 - broken link, should be Page Speed Monitoring | Pingdom

Level 12

I agree with ScottRich  Simply direct your browser here,

Page Speed Monitoring | Pingdom

Level 9

That hover board is sweeeeet!

So, I hate to help my fellow competitors.....but today's hint link should be this.

Level 9

All green checks this week.  My son has been asking for that Lego set for months.  Fingers crossed!

Edit: PriceIsRightLosingHorn.wav

Level 9

thank you

Level 9

Thank you

Level 11

ARGH!!! Jumped the gun on todays answer First red cross in a while

Lesson learnt, read the hint more carefully!

Level 9

Some of you hardened IT gurus have probably come across this before but I thought I'd share for the rest of the community

I always remember this top tip from my early days as a network engineer, I was struggling with a problem which later turned out to be a typo in my configuration. My manager used to have this on the back of a business card and presented this to me when I was a little stressed.

He simply asked how many F's did you see? When I gave my answer he said read it again then tell me your answer once more....

Needless to say I found the typo quickly after this! 🙂

Level 9

Looks like we had the same for today's question 🙂

Level 8

Out of interest, are you in Bristol (or the south west at least)?

Level 9

Todays question needs updating please

At least I was guaranteed to get this one right!

Level 11

Tough one today...

Took me a while, but I got the correct answer in the end

Yeah that one hurt but got there in the end

I'm sorry you found this question so difficult... I made some changes to adjust.

Level 9

Yes it is really difficult now, any more changes?
