THWACK Monthly Mission - June 2018

Level 15

You are about to take off on a voyage to the great network beyond, a place with deeper visibility and smarter scalability. There are three things to remember about being a captain of your network: keep your shirt tucked in, go down with the network, and never abandon an end-user.

On your journey to find the nexus of your network universe, you will have power of the latest SolarWinds® Network Insight™ for Cisco Nexus® at your disposal. This is the third Network Insight feature that SolarWinds has developed to bring deeper visibility into critical network devices.

This month, you will learn everything you need to prepare for your next great network quest. You will be quizzed over, Head Geek™, Destiny Bertucci’s latest eBook, “How to Simplify Monitoring for Complex Network Devices” and a special SolarWinds Lab™ episode that will help ensure you’re Using the Right Tool for the Job.

Fun will now commence!

Too bad to read that emotions are not involved in today's question

Hey, wabbott and rschroeder, I'm curious if the issue is browser specific.  I'm using IE11 (I know, old dawg here) and here's what mys screen says:

pastedImage_1.png

Listing the exact time stamp rather than "X minutes ago".  Not saying that everyone should up...er...rather, downgrade to IE11 but it's odd that the same coding would generate dissimilar behavior.  Same result on Chrome as well.

Today, using IE 11.0.9600.19035, I'm not seeing the issue.  Time stamps are as expected.

I checked it out with Chrome today, too (version 67.0.3396.99, just upgraded from .88 yesterday afternoon).  No issues.  Time stamp is correct.

wabbott, I'm mystified.  The problem appears to be gone.

Level 9

Hoping to win the LEGO Millennium Falcon!!! Would be a cool set to add. Thanks for these missions and education!

Level 15

Thanks for the details, Richard!

+ thegreateebzies for visibility.

Level 20

Use the force!  This guy has more stuff than wluther I think lololol!!!

That's some serious Star Wars stuff right there!  Ugh I'm seeing currently being moderated on this thread now... I don't know why thwack does that sometimes???  It didn't do it for the last three weeks so what's up with that?  This isn't a good thread to have moderated.

Level 20

ScreenHunter_01 Jun. 27 05.33.gif

Go figure my post above said being moderated and this one didn't... that's a thwack bug right there.

MVP
MVP

Well, ecklerwr1, the top part of the picture is off to a good start...

You really need to stop spamming so much so you're not moderated... Pfft... Such a trouble maker!

Level 20

My other post caught the being moderated thwack bug!

Regarding today (June 27) question/answer choices, I bet it wouldn't be a stretch for VNQM to monitor the weather.  Certainly NPM can do it with the right hardware on the outside of the building, and network connectivity to it, and snmp enabled on it.

Even better:  if VNQM could directly associate changes in the weather with VoIP issues like jitter!  Maybe PerfMon could tie the two together!

While that picture DOES appear a bit creepy, and WAY over the top for most movie fans, it's NOTHING compared to folks who collect cars, boats, airplanes, stereo equipment.

And don't get me started on what I've seen in the living rooms/dens/basements/garages of server admins and Network Analysts.  While their home networks aren't creepy like that shrine to George Lucas's creativity, they're MUCH more expensive!

MVP

We have BridgeWave radios that monitor the weather for us. If the rain is heavy enough they drop signal and we get an alert. (Yes, they have built in switching which will allow us to add an additional radio pair working at a different frequency and it would switch over and keep the communications, but we just can't convince the customer that this should be done)

Level 8

Who needs VNQM to monitor the weather when you have......

That's a good one.

I think someone is trying to say John is stoned....

A webcam pointing at the Weather Stone is all anyone would need, right?

It reminds me quite of bit of the Pet Rock's that came out a couple of generations ago.  People bought them for the ridiculous novelty card that came with them.

Level 12

Hey Bill! Your post was being caught for having the word "war" in it. Perks to "Star Wars" comments.

Level 12

If it makes you feel any better, rschroeder was just moderated for using the word "hummer".

I'm naïve enough to not have known what about that "h-word" could possibly be inappropriate, but between avoiding Rule 34 and the Urban Dictionary, I had somehow kept my innocence.

The bird watchers I hang out with refer to hummingbirds frequently with that "h-word".  Granted, they're mostly over thirty, but I think they'd be disappointed there's an urban dictionary definition of their delightful shortening of "hummingbird" that references anything to which a propriety filter would object.

On the other hand, bird watchers are often ecologically-minded enough to think that "h-word" might reference a different negative force on the environment--the Humvee (proven hard on the global heating and pollution issues for its poor gas mileage and high output of pollutants).

And, of course, that's referring to the civilian version of the High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle and not...uh...the other thing, right Ben? 😉

Level 20

Wow good to know!

MVP
MVP

ecklerwr1 WOW, yeah that person wins, for sure... I mean, how else would you spend ~$20k.

Level 20

Yeah those full sized character models have to be expensive!

MVP
MVP

I think some of the real, full on, character builds are way more expensive, like $7k-$10k or more... Most of the crazies will just buy, or make, the armor, and then put it on a mannequin... Saves a bunch of credits... But still expensive.

Correct all answers but no any gifts

Hang in there, it took me years before i won anything as well.   Eventually they will pull your name from the hat.

Look at it this way, humayunk16, your odds of winning something are less than 1 in 150,000 on every drawing and that's a lot better than the lottery!  Like jeremymayfield alluded, be patient and good things will come.  And, if you think about it, they have already come in the form of great ***FREE*** training on SolarWinds products!!  Prizes and swag are just the cherries on the sundae.

Level 20

I'm sure there were some made by Lucasfilm themselves... I would guess those could be in the tens of thousands of dollars for sure... maybe more... most likely 6 figures.

MVP
MVP

I couldn't even imagine one of the actual pieces/props of the movie ever making it anywhere down my street... But there is a great place to some high quality stuff.

And don't forget the points you can use in the Thwack store.  Just took delivery of an awesome t-shirt, a cool badge thingy and ... my Thwackpack.  So awesome!

Level 10

Thanks asheppard970 , now I have a huge craving for a sundae with cherries on top.

Homer Simpson Drooling - I love sundaes

i was sad to see that the fridge is no longer on the list of items to be able to trade points in for.

All green checks - Legos, Legos, Legos, Legos . . .

Level 9

Don't worry same boat here, just waiting and enjoying the training and the missions that they do put on. But your Thwack points do get you some cool stuff also!

Always glad to help folks cheat on their diet, tphelps01!  Now go to your local soda shop and dig in!!!

Althought it's difficult, have patience.

If there really ARE 150,000 members in Thwack (as is touted on the Thwack web page), if any significant percentage of them participated in this mission, your likelihood of winning a prize (selected from all those who got this week's questions answered correctly, or who correctly answered ALL mission questions correctly) may be one in ten thousand.  Maybe 1:100,000.

Keep at it. Eventually you'll not only have earned all the points, but will be a prize winner, too.

The longer you play, and the more answers & missions you successfully complete, the better your odds are of winning one of the prizes.  Hopefully it'll be a prize you really like!

Over all my years I have won twice and I have given the gifts back. It's just an honor to be considered. Free yourself of material possessions and seek the wisdom of knowledge.

Level 9

Super all green. waiting for the winner

DanielleH hi I can’t see the points for the mission shortcut on this one.

also my colleague at work can’t see it have these been applied?

My Meraki experience is limited, but we are deploying more and more.  They're an easy solution for connectivity issues.  And easy to manage!  But not so easy to monitor as well as we monitor traditional on-site hardware.  The cloud, and Meraki's management compatibility with SW, leave much to be desired.
