THWACK Monthly Mission - July 2018

Level 15

Your mission: achieve the highest levels of performance for your systems (and make sure your SysAdmin is celebrated this SysAdmin Day).

THWACKsters, before we can launch this mission, we need to go through a launch status check. We’ve never lost a THWACKster on a mission, and we’re sure not going to lose one on my watch! Failure is not an option.

When I call out the system you give me a go/no go, got it?

Applications? Go! Everything has been checked with cross-stack data correlation.

Servers? Go! We’re seeing all green on our AppStack™ Dashboard!

Virtual machines? Go! VMAN shows that we resolved the sprawl issues we were seeing during testing.

Storage? Go! Storage Resource Monitor shows we have plenty of capacity for this mission.

All systems go!

Catch you on the flip side.

What do you need a hint 4?0?0?0!0?0?

Level 20

Thanks that helped.

I believe WABBOTT has left the building if Twitter is accurate.

The hint was missing for me today ... use Google .. it is your friend!!!!

Level 9

I'm a sec geek so I know that Google is NOT your friend i.e. I use something else;-)

Level 12

I learned the answer to today's question (Week 3, Monday, question 11) at the Boston SWUG!

Level 12

Yes, Ms. Abbott is off on a new adventure.

Please feel free to use this as a hint link today.

Congrats to our week 2 winner - meyer837! You'll be taking home the Vankyo LEISURE 3 LED Portable Projector

Level 14

Not sure Q9 can be answered today given the details in the hint.  Something appears to have changed.  Couldn't do it last week as I was on holiday.

Level 10

Woah, I actually won something! Thanks Wendy!

Level 10

It looks to me like the correct answer is still valid for that one.  Here's the screen it took me to, and I just expanded the Strategies section:

I apologize if I misunderstood your comment, but it looks like the valid answer is still correct.

Level 15

Hi guys!

We had a last minute question swap for Q11.

This is now a poll question and you'll need to click "view poll" to receive credit.

Sorry for the mix up!

MVP
MVP

Last minute question swap you do know we a few hours ahead of you

Is there a "None of the above" option?  We don't have SAM yet on our production environment.  I would love to see us get it but the upper ups won't loosen the purse strings at this point.  If no then I'll just answer the way I would like to see it.

Level 10

Same here... I tried to answer it with what I'd like to monitor with SAM, but it won't take more than one selection.  This poll needs to have a "None of the above" and it needs to allow for multiple selections.

Level 13

Question 10 (7/13) is phrased wrong. The question is phrased:

"Using the online demo, which TWO virtual hosts have Average CPU Load and Average Memory Usage plotted?"

The problem with that question is that you can use the online demo, browse to each virtual host, and see Average CPU Load and Average Memory Usage for all 4 hosts, individually. Here is the Average CPU Load of EASTESX01B: Note the line of average CPU load is plotted on the chart. In that same manner, Average Memory Usage is also plotted for EASTESX01B and all 3 other Virtual hosts.

pastedImage_5.png

In order to make the answers correct (meaning only 2 correct answers). The question should have been phrased something to the effect of:

"Using the online demo, which TWO virtual hosts have Average CPU Load and Average Memory Usage plotted in the PerfStack Analysis tool?

Or even a "I don't have SAM yet but would love a call from a product specialist!" option, if we're talking about shameless marketing (much of which THWACK is anyway! 😉

Most repectfully, ebradford while you can perform the tasks you are describing, I think that might be a little deeper than the Geeks wanted us to go.  This is from the main page to which the link takes you, scrolling down a bit to the middle (posted earlier for our DoD friends):

Level 14

Odd, that's not what I see.  Must investigate.

Level 8

In this case, it was easy enough to search right here on thwack!

Congrats meyer837 I see the KC on you avatar. I lived in Kansas City for 2 years, nice area.

Level 10

Thanks tallyrich, I live in Northeast Ohio these days, but I grew up out in Wichita and lived in the KC area for a few years too. I've been seeing Overland Park hit the "best places to live" lists recently which makes me happy, since that was my favorite part of town. Johnson County in general is a very nice area. I sure miss the BBQ though... But yeah, still a KC Chiefs and Royals fan!

Level 20

I grew up in Montgomery and Loveland Ohio... basically suburbs of Cincinnati... then I went to school in Columbus at Ohio State and Franklin University.  Now I live in the Valley of the Sun in Scottsdale Arizona.

Level 10

I disagree, the online demo that loads up pre-intended contextual information, additionally it specifies that it is already plotted.

that right there are 2 hints. you're just asking to add redundant additional labels; but in my opinion does not make the question invalid in the way it was presented.

Level 7

Scottsdale?  I'm right down the road in North Phoenix, the area of that phoenix/scottsdale/pardisevalley/cave creek claims.

Level 13

You may feel free to disagree. When I brought up the online-demo, it did not bring up the Perf-Stack, but maybe that was because I was already in the demo due to a previous question. However the rules of logic still preside. Since 4 of the answers could be correct (I provided an example previously), and the question specified only 2 possible correct answers, therefore the question was incorrect.

you're saying the the link below did not bring you to the right page, because you may have had previous questions open.

http://oriondemo.solarwinds.com/ui/perfstack/PSTK-08C542BB5F8777F50177F1ADD0EB3AAEE7D9A372

I tried recreating what you're suggesting and i was not able to, additionally it doesn't really make sense for it to behave like you're describing.

the only thing that may differ is you getting prompted to login if you have timed out, but it will still take you to the correct page after logging in.

if you are saying that the link provided does some funky stuff like take you to some alternate page, then the burden of proof lays on you to recreate that.

given that the link is correct as far as i can tell the question reads:

"Using the online demo, which TWO virtual hosts have Average CPU Load and Average Memory Usage plotted?"

one can obtain the correct answer since the performance analysis page only has 2 hosts that that have both those metrics plotted, meeting the criteria described above.

if you went and looked at those nodes individually, yes they will have CPU and memory metrics, but the question isn't asking which hosts track those components individually, it's asking which ones are plotted.

I don't know if you got the question right or wrong but the points you're trying to make aren't making sense.

Level 20

Sweet!  I live near Pima and Dynamite right now in the North part of Scottsdale.

Wow it's also pretty wild how SAM can report on Office 365... this is the first time I've seen this.

Level 9

For our DoD friends!!!!

pastedImage_0.png

MVP

Yes, it would be a great Blog or session to see how to properly set this up. I'm doing some o365 monitoring, but don't have SAM handling that yet.

Level 14

Yes.  I've been pushing our SaaS SAM provider to get their system upgraded so I can monitor our 50,000+ Office365 accounts.  Unfortunately they borked the system update and now I can't even add nodes.

Level 20

I read about your upgrade on the upgrade experience thread... I sure hope that gets worked out pretty soon.  We just did an upgrade on everything except NTA and it went ok but I suppose that's because the bugs are mostly worked out already.

Level 13

Agree to disagree.

Level 9

I messed with the O365 monitoring a bit and it was really just a bunch of scripts that returned OK even if there wasn't any data coming back, as well as it required some pre-reqs that weren't clearly listed. I gave up for now hoping some updates improve it. It isn't as "out of the box" as I would like, especially since they are pushing it as a feature of the product. If I wanted to hack around with scripts all day I wouldn't be paying someone else.

Level 12

Any chance those of us in the DoD can get a screen-shot for today's question?

Level 12

Here you go.

pastedImage_0.png

I'm very interested in the 7/19/2018 question's Demo view that shows  "Netpath to Office 365" Widget Resource.

How is this built?  I'd like to add it to my views.

pastedImage_0.png

Or is SAM required to accomplish this?  I don't have SAM . . .

MVP
MVP

Ditto - I am going to guess it's a Custom SWQL

Level 13

I looked at my Orion 2017.1.3, NPM12.1 SAM 6.4 installation, and saw only one Office 365 Application listed: Office 365 User Statistics with PowerShell. But the demo has 11 Applications listed. A little bit of searching on Thwack brought to light that the enhanced Office365 support was added in version 6.5. Alas, I will have to wait until we can complete out migration to Windows Server/SQL 2016.

I love the Office 365 Summary page in the Demo.  Are all of these features available in SAM right now?  This is amazing!!!

Level 13

So, I'm trying to set-up some amount of O365 on my our deployment. When assigning a template to the ICMP outlook.office365.com node, it asks for credentials. I'm an O365 dummy. Does anyone know, do I have to create an account on office365.com and then use that? Anyone successfully set-up the SAM templates for O365, please let me know what credentials you used (generically).

Level 20

I'm not sure how to answer today's question... the hint link shows a couple new arrays but the list has one on it that's not new but is supported... do I check the previous supported array or only the new ones???  I could see it going either way and that's not good.

MVP
MVP

I did get stuck with the same thought process, the question does say "What additional storage arrays are now supported by Storage Resource Monitor?" my gut would say it's just the new ones.

Level 9

Really hoping for a win, would love the bluetooth speaker

Level 10

Looking at the comments prior to the question and hint I was getting worried that this was going to be a tricky question.

Then I looked at the hint and this was very straightforward and not tricky at all.

Level 8

Thanks for helping with the thought process on this one. For everyone else who paused for this question, just stick to the hint and don't overthink it.

Level 11

I took the chance and it is literally what it says, additional.
