THWACK Monthly Mission - July 2018

Level 15

Your mission: achieve the highest levels of performance for your systems (and make sure your SysAdmin is celebrated this SysAdmin Day).

THWACKsters, before we can launch this mission, we need to go through a launch status check. We’ve never lost a THWACKster on a mission, and we’re sure not going to lose one on my watch! Failure is not an option.

When I call out the system you give me a go/no go, got it?

Applications? Go! Everything has been checked with cross-stack data correlation.

Servers? Go! We’re seeing all green on our AppStack™ Dashboard!

Virtual machines? Go! VMAN shows that we resolved the sprawl issues we were seeing during testing.

Storage? Go! Storage Resource Monitor shows we have plenty of capacity for this mission.

All systems go!

Catch you on the flip side.

Probably some of the best prizes to date. Looking forward to this mission. A Fire Stick compatible projector would be sweet.

And...

Def Leppard - Rocket - YouTube

We are GO for TLI!!!

Some cool prizes this month, would love to win the headphones for my son, the bluetooth speaker for my wife and the loot crate subscription for me

Not too much to ask for is it???

Good luck everyone

I'm interested in the prizes, but more so in the actual challenges.  Hopefully we'll be forced to learn & think & use the demo environment (instead of simply clicking a link & hitting Ctrl+F to search for a term).

Don't you worry! There are plenty of demo based questions coming up.

This is a great month! Not only is my birthday during this month, but I have found the perfect beverage to have at my party! Why does this NOT exist in the Thwack store yet?

I tried to download and install the server and application monitor software but was unable to install it.  We use '_' characters in most of our computer names and the software can't cope with it.  I get the following error.  I cant realy rename all of our machines to suit the software.  IS there any way around this?

The Beasts headphones are the item I'm saving points for also. I have less that 5000 pints to go, I should be there by the middle of next month if the "creek don't rise".

Thank you!  I thought I was going to have to wait until I got home to answer this.

Happy to help.    Just nice I happened to remember ... although I'm sure someone else would have got it if I forgot.

betafish
Level 8

phil0569 I'm pretty sure the answer officially is no (see solarwinds installer has detected invalid characters.) But this work-around might work?

You'll have better luck getting answers if you post in the SAM forum.

I think Question 3 this week is wrong.  I looked at the demo and selected all of the ports for Microsoft.Exchange.Store.Worker.exe and it told me I was wrong.  Trying not to give too much away but I selected 3 ports, the other two were not for that process name.  Very Very Very Strange.

nml_shft
Level 8

Seems to be an issue with Q3 - selected Ports as per demo and got a wrong???

hansons
Level 11

think you selected one to many ?

phil0569
Level 8

I think your right, the name of the process is slightly different is it not. Oooopppppsss my mistake.

hansons
Level 11

unfortunately so ... I almost did the same thing, more coffee required I think

uniswtc
Level 12

I also have selected the 3 ports for the exe mentioned in the question and it was marked as wrong. Seems the answers provided by us considering as wrong. Please consider or reset my question. Thank you.

dodo123
Level 13

Read the question carefully, then read the options you got the answer wrong

but reading the comments made me slightly cautious before clicking the button

-_-
Level 9

if you selected 3 ports for your answer, you are wrong.

please have closer attention to detail next time.

-_-
Level 9

there seems to be no problem with the question.

tonedepear
Level 10

Umm.. it *looks* like the correct answer for 05/07 isn't there?

hansons
Level 11

tonedepear nope its there you have to click on the link between the two

phil0569
Level 8

It is, just put your pointer on the red line......

OH YEAH!

F*ck my eyes. Thanks very much both. Looking at the wrong link, obv.

Much obliged.

petergwilson

To be fair the question has a mistake in it.  One of the node names is wrong (missing an 'M').  Still got it right though.

uniswtc
Level 12

Thank you. Yes, my answer was wrong. Later I realized .

And question 4:

knucklebusted
Level 11

I got question for yesterday wrong. I can't see 1920x1080 on a 11" tiny screen with my old eyes. Didn't know I was going to have to read fine print to answer the question. All I saw really long names. Bummer.

drknight82
Level 7

Anyone else notice that the Question for 7/5 asked for EASTEXMBX01v to WESTEXBX01v?  guessing just a typo  but the question is missing the letter M in the servers name.

petergwilson
Level 14

Yes and I have already commented on this.  See earlier post.  Doesn't really cause any problem though as it couldn't have been any other node they were referring to.  The big red line also helped.

vcaldwell

Ypur Question made me laugh out loud!

wabbott
Level 15

Hi all,

Since everyone in the US is dealing with a case of the Mondays for the second time this week (Independence Day fell on a Wednesday this year) and there was a small typo, I'm giving the group who missed Q4 another chance.

Q3 will stay as is, there were no issues with the question other than a few of you forgot to caffeinate before answering the question. Don't feel bad, there are plenty more chances to still qualify for prizes this month!

Be sure to check out our other SysAdmin Day giveaways>> This SysAdmin Day will be a GAME CHANGER!

I confess to being confused by today's Test Environment output.  It looked like the information didn't match the question's options; I had to look at it a long time, and then make a guess about the intent of the question.

From the screen shot I made, there are MULTIPLE latency measurements between WESTEXMBX01v and EASTEXMBX01v.

5ms, 4ms, 2ms, 88ms, etc.

If you look at the top two higlighted entries over the columns, it looks like the question should have only one answer, but each of the rows below these column headers has their own latency measurement.

pastedImage_0.png

Perhaps I'd have understood better, more quickly, if the question said "which latency between these two servers is showing an alert or alarm status?"

Even more challenging was that the graphic's line in question didn't show numbers on the first time through when I selected it.  Trying to duplicate the problem for a screen shot resulted in the right information being shown.  Maybe my browser was at fault . . .

Thankfully, I'm still batting 1.000 for the month, although the month is young.

pony10
Level 12

Oops.  I see my mistake.  I rushed Wednesday and therefore didn't read close enough.  Oh well.

pastedImage_1.png

asheppard970
Level 13

Most respectfully, rschroeder, if one hovers over the red indicator label, the flyout offers some insight as to what is shown, which is what was asked ("What is the 'latency'[...]"):

pastedImage_0.png

rschroeder
Level 21

When looking at the yellow highlighted areas I provided, there is a latency statistic for each of them, making it a matter of interpreting the intent of the question before being able to guess at which answer might be most appropriate.  Certainly there's info about latency when hovering.  But there is different latency in the table at the right, and it references latency between the same two nodes.

I felt this is duplicate latency information that might lead to confusion, so I called it out for thought.

rschroeder
Level 21

The blue lines show the confusion.  Each represents a latency measurement between the indicated devices.  While the main network line also shows a latency figure at the same time that is different from most of these smaller latencies.

It becomes a matter of interpreting which one is the one referenced in the answers, but as asheppard970 noted, one might save time and confusion by not digging into the stats at the right of the graphic, and focusing solely on the red line.

Or, one might dig into the stats in the chart at the right of the page and learn more, but risk increasing their options and confusion.

;^)

They use that one a lot.  Hopefully folks have been paying attention.
