THWACK Monthly Mission - January 2019

Community Manager

Navigating the CLOUD CONTINUUM

You are here, in a vast and ever-changing IT universe. Good thing you have your trusty data map, because finding an integrated monitoring solution and navigating the evolving need for observability could get tricky. Will a nebulous, hybrid situation take you ever further into the cloud? Or, are you already out there pushing the limits of cloud-native technologies? Either way, the future is coming for you.

Explore which technologies you’ll move forward with, and discover where you need to land in the cloud continuum to come out the other side in an advanced state. This voyage is about navigating through complexity at warp speed, while minimizing MTTR. So, grab your dynamic field explorer and let’s start this mission.

THANKS!

Level 8

Hey January 18th. From where I'm from.... we call em "Check boxes"

That's my first red cross this month .

Level 11

Thanks for the 2nd chance.  I too had this wrong as I wouldn't have classed that as the answer.  I've never heard of the term option box before tbh.  However I nailed it this time around

MVP

Today's question was a tricky one as pingdom does so much cool stuff.

Level 14

absolutely - read carefully.

Amen to that!  The movies are often guilty of misrepresenting people.  Plus, the Internet is likely misrepresenting things, too.

I think, based on your thoughts about "your" vs. "you're", you'd enjoy a radio show called "A Way With Words."  It's worth listening to during drive time, or downloading the podcast if that's more convenient.  People write in or call in with pet language/pronunciation/grammar peeves, requests for history/origin of words or phrases, and stories of how their own families or regional dialects / neighbors / employers use locally-unique words.

Question 11 is a perfect way to filter out those who simply perform an Ctrl-F and answer based on the results.  When we see all the multiple-choice answers are present on the page, and the question uses radio buttons instead of check boxes, now we have to analyze how there could  only be one true answer.  We must read more carefully than simply searching for a phrase on a page.

I like it!

Level 11

Not really, you can still use Ctrl-F but you just need to know what to search for

I usually search something from the question and get right to the answer

WHAT!?!?!?  No, no, no, no, no, Rick, I was told that if it's on the Internets then it is absolute Gospel TRUTH!!!  Now, you're telling me that people can actually LIE and DECEIVE on the Internets?  Oh, say it ain't so, Rick, SAY IT AIN'T SO!!  <he says with tongue planted firmly in cheek>

Tongue firmly in cheek:

pastedImage_0.png

I, too, use Ctrl+F frequently.  I particularly enjoyed today's answers because they all show up when searching the hint page.  As you noted, thought is required to select the correct answer.

I have a chip on my shoulder for using CTRL+F because I feel using it results in someone selecting an answer without having to read and understand everything on the Hint page.  Yes, it's efficient use of one's time.  No, selecting the correct answer so one receives the points is not the purpose of the page--that's to educate the reader about the product.

We'll never achieve perfect consensus over the point of a SW question, its answers, points gained, and time efficiency.

Level 12

Hope everyone had a great weekend! As we get into this week, let's start it off right with congratulating c0eus on being our second week winner for this month's mission. I'll be shooting you a DM here in just a moment to get some information from you.

Level 10

Reading the comments today made me expect a tricky question. It was not. Just remember you want to know about Visitor Insights, which is a small section on the hint page.

Level 13

Congrats c0eus!

Level 10

There were no Closed Captions for this video. Like many of us, I don't have sound at work, so I rely on CC or transcripts, neither of which are available for this video. Otherwise, I have to use a different computer with headphones at a later time, which is inconvenient because I always forget to look at this at home, I really only use Thwack at work.

Level 12

Liked today's question, am considering testing the product.

Level 12

You can find the answer without the video.  I was able to locate it without watching.

Level 12

Yup, the video is just a great way of starting off what you'll be looking for. Glad you were able to find it!

Level 12

For our DoD freinds:

pastedImage_0.png

Level 11

The shortcut implies we can participate in all 4.  I tried a second one and it said "You have already completed this survey"

Level 12

You totally can. Did you submit already for one? It's sort of a, choose how many you want to do before submitting type deal. I can see about getting it reset for you so you can submit again with multiple entries.

Level 7

Yeah, the hint was really bad on Q13.

So the glossy on AppOptics today has the feel of some slick marketing to it.

AppOptics provides real-time visibility into any application by collecting both high-fidelity

metrics and detailed transaction traces.

I whacked the Great Googly Moogly for "high-fidelity metrics", as I have never, never, never in my short-legged life heard that term, and I found some articles on br34st cancer awareness, some diatribe on helo rotors, and stuff on "Fidelity.com" but nothing that related to data acquisition and KPIs.  I think there was a Boomer involved in the making of that piece... 😉  Hi-Fi was what we listened to in the parlor on a Sunday afternoon with Muffy and the fam, sipping our Mint Julips and discussing the latest Polo match!  <again, he says with tongue planted firmly in cheek>

Level 14

Will the winner of the USB connected vinyl deck also get high-fidelity?

Level 16

High Fidelity, just means its sounds good.

The term was retired back around 1973.

pastedImage_0.png

MVP
MVP

It has been rebranded as high definition audio.

The "what was old is new again" marketing plan.

Level 9

As a buzzword maybe retired, I might point you to the dictionary definition dot com of fidelity, "accuracy; exactness" with synonyms like precision. If we swap in a synonym I think "High-precision" makes perfect sense for the kind of data and metrics were talking about.

q16 was the toughest one ever!

Level 8

Thwack Question.PNG

I hope I won't get in trouble for posting the answer

2019-01-28 09_59_47-Announcements_ THWACK Monthly Mission - January... _ THWACK.png

This is even easier than the last question of each month!

Level 14

& folk say that some of the questions are confusing.

Today's is the most straightforward I've ever seen.  "Press this button" Oh, OK then

Level 14

Took a brave pill and selected the only answer that was available.

Level 12

I like the Q16, no way you can get dreaded red cross LMAO

Level 12

I was suspecting that much so I have not answered. Tricky questioin like

MVP
MVP

Sorry, I should have been clear. This is a photoshoped image, as it is not possible to get the answer wrong with the current definition

Level 12

Well must admit, you have tricked me...

pastedImage_0.png

Level 11

I finally got one right!!!

Level 9

piechart.jpg

I have a distinct feeling that a reset will be coming on Q16...not sure why; just a hunch.  It's not April 1st here in the US - at least not yet - so that's not it.

Mayhaps a little of Fourbucks newest marketing ploy is required:

pastedImage_1.png

Great point, trf.  I was merely taking a trip down memory lane. We had a "Hi-Fi" system when I was a wee lad, a Montgomery Wards number I believe, and I remember spinning vinyl on it for many an hour.

Your comment is well taken, and while I believe there is great merit in the synonymical substitution, it's simply that I find it odd that a acoustician's terminology would be used to describe data, that's all.  Feels very much like the proverbial "square peg in a round hole" to me.

pastedImage_1.png

Level 9

Was a hard one but I managed to get it right!

Level 10

LOL

Level 12

I definitely thought today's question was going to stump everyone. How'd ya'll figure it out so fast?

You already know what's coming. If you give a refresh you'll notice. I promise this one is about the same level in difficulty.

pastedImage_0.png

Level 12

What a very specific meme. I like it.

Level 9

WTF? You all get the easy ones. Now how TF am I supposed to answer THIS? LOL!
