THWACK Monthly Mission - January 2019

Navigating the CLOUD CONTINUUM

You are here, in a vast and ever-changing IT universe. Good thing you have your trusty data map, because finding an integrated monitoring solution and navigating the evolving need for observability could get tricky. Will a nebulous, hybrid situation take you ever further into the cloud? Or, are you already out there pushing the limits of cloud-native technologies? Either way, the future is coming for you.

Explore which technologies you’ll move forward with, and discover where you need to land in the cloud continuum to come out the other side in an advanced state. This voyage is about navigating through complexity at warp speed, while minimizing MTTR. So, grab your dynamic field explorer and let’s start this mission.

JANUARY MONTHLY MISSION

Use the mission’s resources to complete the tasks and answer the questions for a chance to win!

Correctly answer each question during the week and you'll be entered for a chance to win the weekly prize.

Correctly answer all 20 questions over the course of the month and you'll be entered for a chance to win the grand prize.

150 points are being awarded for each correctly answered question. There are 20 questions, which means you can earn a maximum of 3,000 points for this mission.

New Year mission 2019!  Different prizes this month.

Funny this mission starts today. Today is also when my team Adds "cloud" to its official set of tasks.

It's no longer a one off niche need, its about to be offered to internal IS as a service with all the standardization to ensure security and compliance baked in, and everything else internally hosted resources provide.

One of this month's prizes interests me:

The handheld Garmin GPS is a $228.00 prize.  I've used a Garmin very much like it for around ten years, and while the screen is tiny, it's reliable.  I've been happy with it when driving on frozen lakes, to find underwater structure to drill over and ice fish.

It's also been fun to use when GeoCaching.

I'm in...

I had a small feeling in the back of my mind you might like this one specifically. I've been doing my best to try to keep the prizes a bit more themed and interesting to the mission. Although I know everyone looooves Echo Dots forever.

Man, I think if I don't win the week 2 prize, I might have to just go out and buy it!

Or Google home mini!  I love mine and got it free with my Pixel XL 2.  I read yesterday that the Pixel XL 4 is one of the most hotly waited for this year.  Apparently a lot of others like me skipped the 3 last year.  I expect if the Pixel 4 is a decent design there's going to be a lot of people buying one.

The James Webb telescope bag is neat.

Very awesome prizes this month.  Interesting topic as well.   This should be fun.

I'm still in love with my 3, but LOVE when we get closer to new phone launches. All the leaks and speculation articles. I eat it up, haha.

marcoswithanoh

Right? I really love the look of it.

These hints suck, not sure how many levels you have to dig to find the answer

The Google Pixel 4 smartphone may have just been leaked super early as new codenames have appeared online: Bonito and Sargo.

Also android Q is going to support this:

Ugh........red x this morning.  I could've sworn I had it correct.

melonizame
Level 12

I haven't click yet, because I do not see a definitive answer for question 2.  Going to wait to see what everyone else says.  I could just be missing it also, but nothing is standing out as the perfect answer.

oiram
Level 12

Easy one...

bobmarley
Level 15

The Garmin GPS is an awesome prize

asheppard970
Level 13

"One of these things is not like the others."

The answer(s) is(are) in the hint.  Might take a couple of clicks, but you will find it(them).

smttysmth02gt
Level 13

Yes, but all 4 options were found in the hint. That is what got me.

asheppard970
Level 13

Really?  I only saw three.  Curious where you found the fourth on the hint page.  Even when I clicked on the four buttons at the left and did a CTRL+F, I couldn't find it... Might PM marcoswithanoh and let him know how you found it as he would probably like to know and, possibly, correct it.

marcoswithanoh
Level 12

Not sure how much I like the idea of this is. Seems like going backwards in terms of thickness. That being said, AR features for an upcoming phone sounds SUPER interesting.

marcoswithanoh
Level 12

Yeah I'm curious now too. I just double checked and it was all pretty straight forward.

smttysmth02gt
Level 13

Maybe I've finally lost my mind then?

marcoswithanoh
Level 12

I'm right there with you then. I just scanned over the page and all the various tabs and couldn't find SCM on there.

marcoswithanoh
Level 12

Glad you think so!

smttysmth02gt
Level 13

Confirmed I've lost my mind finally!  Thanks for checking and sorry LOL

pony10
Level 12

I found it very straight forward.  I didn't even have to click anything beyond the hint page and I didn't do a Ctrl+F.

ecklerwr1
Level 19

That's just an engineering sample though... we'll see what happens.

ecklerwr1
Level 19

That should help people hehe!

marcoswithanoh
Level 12

That's true. I've seen a foldable already at a Sprint store.

asheppard970
Level 13

I think we've all been there, smttysmth02gt...it's all good.

asheppard970

I rather like the idea of having a "mini tablet" sized device available to me for quick presentations and whatnot.  Then to be able to fold it over and slip it in me pocket is totes magotes!  (OK, admittedly I am NOT a Millennial so forgive my use of the generational jargon there...but it does seem totally rad, gnarly, phat, bad, and choice!!! Ah, that's better... ;-)

pony10
Level 12

Far Out Man and Cool     (Had to through in being a child of the 60's and 70's)

I wonder if it has the ability to connect to an external source like an overhead projector or large monitor for doing presentations?

bobmarley
Level 15

Before GPS was around we used to fish on Lake Michigan. Once you found the school you would throw a plastic bottle with a long line and a weight on it so you could find the school again. Any time a bottle was floating a crowd of boats would show up and surround your area. Once we got a GPS we would still go out and throw a bottle in as a decoy far away from where we were going to fish.

asheppard970
Level 13

Ooh, ooh, Meester Kawter, Meester Kawter!!!  Sign me up fer dat!  Fosho!  Hang ten, groovy, boss, bitc*in!!

Now, if I put two and two together and added twelve and carried five (for thems of you what knows who C. W. McCall is, you'll recognize the cap doff to "Wolf Creek Pass" there...), I come up with the fact that there are a-dapter kits available to take the USB 3.1 Micro-b (or whatever they're putting on the X) to HDMI, which should then go to any newer model projector.  Voila!  We've got ourselves a presentation device!

I like your line of thinking, pony10!

The enhanced functionality within SolarWinds’ products Pingdom®, AppOptics, Papertrail, and Loggly® can be used individually to provide visibility into cloud-based infrastructure and application performance or used together as a DevOps toolkit to maintain 360-degree visibility into cloud monitoring.

Reminds me of the Hobby-Eberly telescope at Macdonald Observatory

marcoswithanoh
Level 12

While true, they did an amazing job matching the aesthetic of the actual telescope.

janobi
Level 11

Should today's question have been a multiple choice and not a radial dial one?  Selected the answer and was informed it was incorrect...

mbecken86
Level 9

Ran into issues with hint of question 3 for this month the link sends to a pdf that as soon as I start scrolling it goes blank. Just a little input from my end.

asheppard970
Level 13

Be very careful with today's question, THWACKsters!  It SPECIFICALLY refers to a certain "feature" of Loggly and what that "feature" does.  Other answers might be in the hint...just sayin'.

stevenastem

Renders fine for me on:

Uh was Question 2 always a check box and not a radio button?

stevenastem
Level 12

From my recollection, yes.  I can't, of course, confirm whether I answered before or after you, however.

janobi
Level 11

Yeah this is what got me :/  Teach me to read properly next time :l
